Conquering your first world is the hardest, after all. My power grew as I moved from world to world, taking anything that would make the next taking easier.
~ Ob Nixilis

Ob Nixilis is a human Planeswalker who was cursed to become a demon and a secondary antagonist from Magic: the Gathering. He set his sights on Conquering the Multiverse, but made many enemies and problems on his quest. Before he was cursed, he had exceptional strength and was a master strategist. Now being a demon, he has all powers associated with being a demon.

History[]

Conqueror[]

Ob Nixilis lived on an unnamed plane which was ravaged by cycles of war and peace. Every few decades, society would collapse due to war and would eventually return to normal. Because of this, he learned that society will eventually be destroyed and the only thing that matters is to take everything you desire before that happens. He became a warlord that managed to evade other warlords who sought to rule the plane as well, but soon found some assistance from an unlikely source. Ob Nixilis found a demon summoning chamber, slaughtered his remaining soldiers, and had a demonic army at his command. Seeing the desire and ambition in his heart, they slaughtered every other being on that world. After walking around an empty plane, Ob Nixilis's spark ignited and he was now a powerful Planeswalker who could travel through the blind eternities onto other planes. With this power, he sought to conquer the multiverse and started ruling multiple planes. As a pre-mending Planeswalker, the scope of Ob's power was essentially limited by his own imagination. Wanting to increase his power, Ob Nixilis went to the plane of Shandalar to find an artifact known as the "Chain Veil". This was an artifact that can unleash very potent black magic and can increase one's power by a significant amount. But, there are negative consequences for using it. Ob Nixilis managed to find and hold the "Chain Veil" which filled him with black mana, almost killing him. After he let it go, he was cursed to take the form of a demon. Now wanting to be cured, he went to the plane of Zendikar with the intention of becoming human again.

Trapped[]

Once on Zendikar, he slaughtered a few locals to absorb their mana. But, he was confronted by the Planeswalker and the plane's self-appointed protector Nahiri who implanted a hedron in his forehead during their fight. This somewhat cured him of his demonic affliction, but it weakened him severely, destroyed his wings, and suppressed his spark. Now a prisoner of Zendikar, Ob Nixilis sought to be free from this plane and vowed revenge against Zendikar and its inhabitants.

For centuries, Ob Nixilis studied the hedrons to the point where he knew more about them than anyone else, even their creator Nahiri. He learned that removing the hedron would help him restore some of his lost power. To do so, he acted as a tour guide to Planeswalkers who came to Zendikar. He would tell them about the hedron in his head and hoped that one of them would remove it. Eventually, Jace Beleron took his bait and after a brief battle the hedron was removed. Ob Nixilis gained some power back as well as his old demonic appearance including the regrowth of his wings, but was not a Planeswalker yet. At this point, Ob Nixilis found out about the existence of the Eldrazi who were consuming Zendkiar's land and inhabitants. Wanting to conquer the Multiverse yet again, he now sought to reignite his spark.

Reignited[]

Nissa vs Ob Nixilis

In order to get his spark back, Ob Nixilis figured that the destruction of Zendikar would do the job. To do this, he found the "Khalni Heart" and used a small hedron network to absorb the mana it produced to eventually drain the plane's mana. This would have worked, if not for the elf Planeswalker Nissa Revane who fought Ob Nixilis. Now filled with elemental power, she defeated him, managed to safely relocate the Heart, and left him to die. Later on in the story when a few Planeswalkers and Zendikar natives managed to re-imprison the Eldrazi titan Ulamog at Sea Gate, Ob Nixilis returned and saw his chance for power. After murdering a few of the kor guards and by absorbing the mana from the hedron network holding Ulamog, he not only freed the titan, but also reignited his spark in the process. Ob destroying the network awoke Kozilek from his slumber.

Soon he met opposition from three Planeswalkers, (Gideon Jura, Jace Beleren, and Nissa Revane) but managed to both humiliate and defeat them fairly easily. Nissa wanted revenge for what he attempted to do at Khalni Heart, but with his newfound strength, the demon beat her with ease. To add insult to injury, Nixilis teased if she just let him absorb the Heart, he would have peacefully left. Now because of her, Ob wanted to burn her world out of spite. He was going to mutilate the rest of the Zendikari at Sea Gate, but realized the telepath Jace was trying to manipulate him into leaving the plane. In response, the demon inflicted Jace with a pain-inducing spell and managed to break one of his cheekbones and would have cleaved his head off if Jace hadn't spiked his mind. Gideon intervened so Jace's neck wouldn't be snapped and Jura managed to tear Ob's wing. This feat impressed the demon and he offered to have a rematch with Gideon wherever and whenever he chooses. Though Gideon's refusal made Ob realize how weak the Planeswalkers who came after the mending were, he was deviously surprised when Gideon's invulnerability prevented Nixilis from delivering the killing blow. Though he couldn't physically toy with his new adversary, Ob mentally scarred Gideon by killing a few Zendikari who were trying to escape. Seeing an opening, he managed to wrestle Gideon until he managed to pin him and nearly drowned him. He mocked him one final time by comparing Zendikar's value to the dirty water Gideon was choking on.

With his enemies at his mercy, Ob Nixilis took them to a cave and put them into a magical torture chamber where he taunted them more. He would have killed them if not for another pyromancer Planeswalker Chandra Nalaar freeing her captive friends. The five walkers engaged in combat and once Chandra combined her magic with everyone else's, Ob Nixilis was scared enough to finally decide to leave Zendilar. He swore revenge on the heroes (now named the Gatewatch) and planeswalked away.

War of the Spark[]

Ob Nixilis from War of the Spark

Ob Nixilis was brought to Ravnica by Nicol Bolas and was imprisoned by the Immortal Sun. He had no affection for the Gatewatch or for Bolas so he caused as much destruction as he desired. But after seeing how much of a threat Bolas was and for the sake of his own interests, he joined other Planeswalkers to stop him(much to their disdain). Ob Nixilis went with Karn, Dack Fayden, and Samut through the Planar Bridge into Amonkhet to stop Tezzeret and the Planar Bridge so the dreadhorde wouldn't be able to reach Ravnica anymore. They succeeded in destroying the Bridge with Ob dealing with the eternals, but Tezzeret congratulated and warned them that if Bolas was defeated, there would be no one able to stop him from claiming the power he seeked. During the War, Ob Nixilis absorbed the souls of the Eternals to increase his power. After Tezzeret fled, Ob Nixilis destroyed all of the Eternals on Amonkhet and absorbed enough power to double in size. The God Hazoret and Sarkhan Vol joined the group to return to Ravnica, but Ob Nixilis left the group so he wouldn't be trapped on Ravnica again.

Streets of New Capenna[]

Ob Nixilis the Adversary

Ob Nixilis, the Adversary

Ob Nixilis appears on the streets of New Capenna where he is involved with the demon crime families. He is known as the Adversary by the crime families and intends on conquering the plane with his henchmen. He siphoned off members of each of the families with the promise of Halo, a substance unique to this plane that has magic enhancing properties. Ob and his new forces struck during the night of the Crescendo. During the night of the Crescendo, he and some of his subordinates fought the head of the Maestros family Xander. Though he managed to hold out against the scores of assassins and former henchmen the Adversary sent his way, Xander was no match against Ob Nixilis and the planeswalker managed to send the crime boss plummeting to his death. Meanwhile, the rest of his minions infiltrated the Crescendo to obtain the Font, a new source of Halo the Cabaretti family is in possession of and is believed to have powerful properties, as well as to kill the other four crime lords. Little did they know the Font was a teenage girl named Giada. Though they managed to weaken the families considerably and injured the head of the Cabaretti Jetmir, they failed to obtain the Font and were intercepted by Elspeth Tirel and Vivien Reid. After mocking the now deceased Xander and venting his frustration on his corpse, several of his men told Ob about what happened at the Vantoleone. While he was disappointed in himself for underestimating Xander, he ordered his comrades to finish their jobs as well to kill Elspeth.

The Adversary eventually caught up to Elspeth, Vivien Reid, and Giada and intended on killing the planeswalkers and stealing the Font. Elspeth tried to hold him off, but she underestimated the demon's speed and was sent flying from a powerful burst of magic and she ended up cracking her head. Though Elspeth wanted Giada to flee, she instead decided to stay with Elspeth by transforming into Halo which gave Tirel more strength. The tables had turned and Elspeth managed to do significant damage to Ob Nixilis. She even managed to slice part of his neck. Before she could harm the demon anymore, Ob Nixilis planeswalked away. Though he failed his mission, Ob's actions caused the unstable fabric of New Capennanian society to break even more.

March of the Machine: The Aftermath[]

Ob Nixilis, Captive Kingpin

Ob Nixilis trapped in New Capenna

As a consequence of sylex detonating in the Blind Eternities, many planeswalkers lost their sparks and could not traverse the multiverse the way they could before, Ob Nixilis being one of them. Now trapped again on New Capenna, the city's crime families want revenge on the Adversary for trying to steal control of the city from them.

Powers and Abilities[]

Ob Nixilis is a master fighter and Strategist due to his studies in combat, wizardry, and the history of his world. His magical specialty was anti-life magic. This kind of magic was used to cause instant death to those who come in contact with it and heal Ob Nixilis in the process. He has been shown to be very intelligent. After becoming a demon, he gained wings, increased physical strength, and increased magical strength. As a Planeswalker, he could travel the Multiverse and gain even more power.
