Obsidian is one of the major antagonists of the Japanese Light Novel franchise Vermeil in Gold. He is the main antagonist of the series' Light Novel 2.
He is the former instructor of the main protagonist, Alto Goldfield, who became his sworn enemy and self-proclaimed love rival when he betrayed his apprentice and the academy by injecting his students with doses from the low ranking devils in attempt to transform his students into devils. When he found out Vermeil is a devil, Obsidia attempted to steal Alto's familiar, Vermeil (who is a devil but the most powerful of all devils) and try to make her his slave but failed due to Vermeil resisted his mind control chains. He was easily defeated by Vermeil and imprisoned by the police for illegal experimentation on his now-formerly students until he broke out of prison.
He was voiced by Takehito Koyasu in Japanese and Adam Gibbs in English.
Biography[]
Obsidian is a former staff member of the Royal Ortigia Magic Academy and Alto Goldfield's former instructor who is a seemly kind and responsible person as well as popular for the female students (until they lose their admiration for him due to his betrayal and experimenting on them as well the other students).
However, in deep down, he is nothing more than a twisted, psychopathic and power-crazed scientist who betrayed Alto and everyone in the Academy where he committed illegal experiments onto his students by injecting them with doses of the lower rank devils, When he discovered that Alto's familiar Vermeil is a devil, he also dosed her and attempted gain control over Vermeil but failed due to him being unworthy of becoming Vermeil's so-called "master" when she easily destroyed Obsidian's mind control chains. After he failed to obtain Vermeil due to her loyalty for Alto, he used a dose of 100 low rank devils by injecting himself (which is only a pathetic measly power). However, he was easily defeated by the reverted-yet-naked Vermeil and was arrested by the Ortigia's police force.
According to the student council president Elena Kimberlight, Obsidian has broke out of prison and goes missing. But he will considered to be a criminal for dosing and experimenting the students with portions of low ranking devils. It is possible that Obsidian would come back one day to get revenge on Alto, Vermeil and their friends.
He was affiliated with Iolite and the platinum squad magicians. But he was a pawn to them when they have no more uses for a weakling like Obsidian because Iolite knew Obsidian would eventually failed him and his fellow platinum magicians as he considered Obsidian as a waste of time for being weak.
Appearance[]
Obsidian is a man who has blond hair and purple eyes. He wears glasses, a light gray cloak a gray suit over a black vest, a white dress, a dark teal tie, light gray pants, and gray shoes.
When he injected himself with the doses of 100 lower rank devils, he became a monstrous in appearance until he reverted back to human after his ease defeat by Vermeil.
Personality[]
Obsidian shown to be a kind and responsible instructor when mentored Alto. However, it has revealed an act for his fake personality.
From his true personality, Obsidian is a twisted, cunning, manipulative, selfish, delusional, remorseless and psychopathic scientist who has no qualms of experimenting people (including children) with doses of the lower rank devils when dosed the students of the Ortigia's academy.
He is shown to be a despicable pervert for his obsession of Vermeil (Alto's devil familiar who is the most powerful of all devils). He even dosed Vermeil with portion of devils where he caused her to transform into her true form and attempted to gain control over Vermeil when he believed himself to be more suitable "master" for Vermeil than Alto. However, he is proved to be very delusional when he is unworthy of being Vermeil's so-called "master" as she easily broke free of his mind control chains due to her undetermined willpower and loyalty to Alto. When he failed to obtain Vermeil for himself, he even dosed himself with portion from 100 devils (who are low ranks). After he transformed, he remained to be deluded as before when he still believed himself to be more powerful than Vermeil and will crush her and everyone with ease as using Vermeil's organs to create an even more powerful doses, only for himself to be easily overwhelmed by Vermeil (due to her being the most powerful of all devils) with just one punch.
When he is proven to be weak against Vermeil, Obsidian also revealed himself to be nothing more than a coward as shown when he attempted to escape from Vermeil only for his getaway to be blocked by Chris Westland (the strongest dragon summoner and a member of the student council). He begged Vermeil to spare his life but only to be punched by the Devil of Disaster (though he survived the attack).

- Alto viewed Vermeil as his familiar and girlfriend when he treated her nicely, while Obsidian is obsessed of Vermeil and attempted to make her as his slave.
- Alto is fearless, while Obsidian is cowardice.
- Alto is a powerful prodigy, while Obsidian is nothing more than a weakling even when imbued with doses of the devils.
- He acts as a contrast to Vermeil, as Vermeil is a devil that chose to live the life of a human, whereas Obsidian is a human who chose to live the life of a devil. Both transform into monsters, but Vermeil chooses not to be one.
- He is the main reason of Alto force to reveal Vermeil's true identity to the student council (although Chris Westland is already aware of it).
