The Obsidians are a major antagonist group in Octopath Traveler. They are a group of criminal mercenaries assembled by Simeon and Mattias to assist Lyblac in her plans to release Galdera. Their activities involve gathering information about how to release the Fallen God and dispose of anyone who discovers Lyblac's goal.

Biography[]

Past[]

One-hundred and fifteen years before the events of the game, Lyblac granted Simeon and Mattias the ability to slow their aging process and had them form a group of mercenaries to dispose of any obstacles to her plans of releasing Galdera.

One-hundred and five years later, ten years before the events of the game, the lord of the city of Noblecourt, Geoffrey Azelhart, found out about the Gate of Finis, where Galdera was imprisoned, and about the Obsidians' plans to free him, and tried to stop them. However, he was killed by the group's top three assassins, Simeon, Rufus, and Albus.

Octopath Traveler[]

The group appears mainly in Primrose's story. In it, Primrose Azelhart, daughter of Geoffrey Azelhart, becomes a dancer in Sunshade, a city frequented by one of her father's killers, Rufus. When he comes visiting the place she works at, Primrose follows him back home and kills him, which allows her to track down the second killer, Albus, and after killing him too, finally confront the mastermind behind his father's death, Simeon. Despite using many tricks to fool her, Simeon is finally defeated in battle and killed by Primrose, who finally finishes her quest to avenge her father.

In Tressa's story, Tressa's a young merchant who travels across Orsterra guided by the journal of someone called Graham Crossford. Unbeknownst to her, Graham Crossford and his bloodline are key to releasing Galdera, which causes Obsidian agent Esmeralda to follow her and steal the journal, hoping to find some valuable information for them in it. However, Tressa chases her and manages to defeat her, taking back the journal.

In Ophilia's story, Ophilia clashes with Mattias, who leads a cult that wants to strengthen Galdera's power over Orsterra. With the help of the Obsidians, Mattias manages to murder Archbishop Josef with poison in order to manipulate his daughter Lianna into joining him in exchange for a (false) promise to resurrect her father. However, the cult leader ends up defeated in battle against Ophilia and killed.

At the end of the game, Lyblac manages to gather all the pieces to release Galdera, but both she and the Fallen God get defeated and sealed again by the party. Whatever happened to the Obsidians, now without their leader and any means to achieve their goal, is unknown.

Trivia[]

  • Despite their influence over the overall plot, the Obsidians only appear in three of the eight travelers' stories.
