The light that was denied us will be ours.
~ The Octarians' quote for Final Fest: Splatocalypse.

The Octarians are a race of cephalopodic creatures that serve as the main antagonists of the Splatoon franchise. They also act as the foot soldiers for the Octarian leader, DJ Octavio.

Once on friendly terms with the Inklings, the Octarians engaged in a brutal turf war with their former allies when sea levels rose, culminating in the defeated Octarians being banished to the underground. As such, they frequently execute plots to get revenge on the Inklings and sustain themselves such as stealing the Great Zapfish.

History[]

Evolution[]

12,000 years prior to the events of the first Splatoon, rising sea levels which started flooding has caused much of humanity to be endangered. Fortunately, a small population of survivors manage to escape into a dormant volcano and reside there, dubbing it Alterna. The survivors discover a population of sea life that they'd eat for sustenance, among them being the ancestors of the Octarians. Settling down in their new home, the residents of Alterna discover that a bizarre liquid crystal found in the local squid (the Inklings' ancestor) would change its appearance based on the feelings of their user and decided to line the ceilings of their home with it, with the crystals changing to resemble the sky based on the residents' collective desire to return to the surface.

After many years, Alterna begins to prosper until one day, a group of young scientists, disregarding their elders' warnings, attempt to launch a rocket from Alterna to the outside world, causing the liquid crystals to overload and come crashing down on the citizens, killing them all off. These crystals, imbued with humanity's wishes and their desire to see the surface, began to break into microscopic pieces which were absorbed by the marine life, causing them to rapidly evolve into terrestrial beings which spread out across the globe, among them being the Inklings and Octarians.

The Great Turf War[]

Around 100 years prior to Splatoon, the Octarians of Inkadia once had a friendly relationship with the Inklings, however, rising sea levels made it difficult for the races to survive, as they could no longer live in the ocean, which caused them both to engage one another in a long and vigorous war known as the "Great Turf War". The early battles of the war ended in Octarian victory, making them the superior race at first, as the Inklings were "unable to wake up early enough in the morning to defend themselves". During the conflict, the Octarians had created giant, terrifying war machines, the Great Octoweapons, which helped defeat the Inklings quickly, however, they were eventually deactivated (allegedly from an accidental pull of a power plug), leading the Inklings to victory.

After the events of the war, the Octarians were exiled into the underground domes which humanity once inhabited, cutting them off from the surface. Developing into a militaristic society keen on vengeance against the Inklings, the Octarians, led by their king DJ Octavio, began developing their underground homes, filling them with LED displays to simulate the night sky as well as creating new and powerful weapons. Furthermore, the Octarians and Inklings would both continue producing negative rumours and propaganda about each other, causing relations to sour even after the war's end. They also entered a trade deal with the Salmonids, who, possessing a hostility against Inklings as well, would supply power eggs to the Octarians in exchange for weapons. However, at some point the Octarians would begin running out of power, causing DJ Octavio to order his troops to steal Inkopolis's Great Zapfish (though it's implied he had selfish intentions to power the Great Octoweapons and restart another war).

Conversely, relations between Octarians and Inklings in the Splatlands did not break down due to rising waters. In addition to living further inland, away from the waters, according to Sunken Scroll 2 three lights bearing the sigils of the Hohojiro, Onaga and Manta clans appeared in the sky and drove away the waters, preventing further damage. As such, Octarians and Inklings still live in harmony in the Splatlands, with powerful clans of Octolings and Inklings such as the families of Shiver and Frye frequently intermingling.

Splatoon[]

In the events of the first Splatoon, the Great Zapfish, the source of power for all of Inkopolis, had turned up missing from the place it usually remains, the Battle Tower. Deducing it as Octarian involvement, Cap'n Cuttlefish, the leader of the legendary Squidbeak Splatoon, had believed that the Octarians had come out of hiding after 100 years since the end of the Great Turf War and that DJ Octavio had kidnapped the Great Zapfish. He had quickly recruited a young individual into the New Squidbeak Splatoon, Agent 3, who he trusted to bring their source of power back safely.

During the fight, many different Octarians were encountered, including robotic ones and the notorious Great Octoweapons; the Mighty Octostomp, the Dreaded Octonozzle, the Rampaging Octowhirl, the Ravenous Octomaw, and the Octobot King. Near mid-conflict, DJ Octavio had kidnapped Cuttlefish, leaving both Agents 1 and 2 (who were secretly Callie and Marie; the Squid Sisters) to guide Agent 3 on their mission. After defeating an entire army of Octarians, many Octolings, and four of the Great Octoweapons, Agent 3 had all Zapfish but one; the Great Zapfish, which was used to power the Octobot King; last Great Octoweapon in the final battle with DJ Octavio.

Splatoon 2[]

In Splatoon 2, which takes place two years after the events of the first Splatoon, it appears that once again, the Great Zapfish had mysteriously gone missing without a trace, however, not only is the Great Zapfish missing, but Callie from the Squid Sisters is as well. Marie, the second member of the Squid Sisters and cousin of Callie, believed that the Octarians were behind the Zapfish again, realizing that DJ Octavio had escaped his imprisonment while being watched very closely by Marie, giving her a better reason to believe that he had kidnapped it once again. Finding an Inkling aimlessly wandering Inkopolis Square, she recruited the aforementioned as Agent 4 of the New Squidbeak Splatoon, tasking them with finding the Great Zapfish just as Agent 3 did two years ago.

Quickly setting out to find it, Agent 4 had encountered familiar Octarians, such as the Octotroopers, Octocopters, and the Twintacle Octotroopers, but all forces were dispatched by the agent. Agent 4 even fought enemies that were not the Great Octoweapons, as all were now finally destroyed by Agent 3, but had faced new Octarian bosses: the Octo Oven, the Octo Samurai, and the Octo Shower, although, to everyone's surprise, one of the Great Octoweapons was resurrected and rebuilt by DJ Octavio: the Mighty Octostomp. Even the new Octarians were not strong enough to defeat the agent and were subsequently defeated, allowing the player to move closer to DJ Octavio.

Getting closer to the final battle, and possibly the Great Zapfish, Marie and Agent 4 had soon found out that the Octarians were the reason Callie had gone missing, and the former desired to reach her cousin no matter the obstacles, asking Agent 4 to not give up and persist forward. And reaching the area where DJ Octavio is possibly located, Agent 4 retrieves all the Zapfish for that area, gaining access to fight Octavio, but also had to fight Callie.

Octo Expansion[]

SanitizedOctarians

The Sanitized Octarians.

In Splatoon 2: Octo Expansion, a new variant of the Octarians is introduced called the Sanitized Octarians, which are Octarians that have lost their free will due to them being "sanitized" by Commander Tartar after he "cleansed" them with his primordial ooze that is inside of Inklings and Octarians, their voices sound more digital and compressed, similar to robots. The sanitisation process is elaborated on in the Splatoon 3 DLC: Side Order where it’s revealed that the memories of affected Octarians are removed and compressed into mem cakes, with dummy data being inserted which makes them mindless and obedient soldiers.

They differ greatly in appearance as their eyes have a different color than purple-blue, they're an aqua color and glowing, and their eyeballs are now black and their bodies are now a blue-to-neon yellow gradient, giving a possibility of them being corrupted somehow. All the same variations of Octarians from the Octo Canyon mode have their own sanitized version, including the bosses. The ink they shoot is similar to a paste-like substance.

They appear to have no pulse or signs of any life inside of their bodies, making them possibly being zombies, as stated by Marina in one of the missions of Octo Expansion.

A well-known Octoling that was "Sanitized" by Tartar is Acht AKA Dedf1sh, a DJ whose music is played in almost all levels. Currently, Marina is attempting to revert the sanitisation of these Octarians by restoring their memories via the Memverse, with Acht having been successfully restored via the project. However, it appears the physical effects of sanitization such as changes in body coloration are permanent as shown from how Acht still resembles a sanitized Octoling, having indigo tentacles and green skin atypical of regular Octolings.

Splatoon 3[]

Furry octos

The Fuzzy Octarians

The Octarians return in Splatoon 3, but under a new boss as DJ Octavio reveals that someone, or something, has kidnapped his forces alongside the Great Zapfish and is using them for dark purposes, indicated by the Fuzzy Ooze that was now being found around the Splatlands outside of Splatsville, and the Octarians themselves sporting fuzzy appearances as they guard the Zapfish under their control.

This is revealed to be the master plan of Mr. Grizz, CEO of Grizzco Industries, having been using the Golden Power Eggs from the Salmonids harvested during Salmon Runs to cultivate his Fuzzy Ooze to turn all evolved sea life on Earth, like the Inklings and Octolings, into mammals and terraform the Earth to his liking. To do so, he kidnapped the Great Zapfish and the Octarians, brainwashing them with his Fuzzy Ooze to turn them loyal to only him.

When New Agent 3 tries to stop Mr. Grizz when he departs on his rocket to launch his endgame, Octavio comes to their rescue when they are knocked off the rocket. Working together with the Squid Sisters, Deep Cut, and New Agent 3's Smallfry Salmonid, Octavio and New Agent 3 are able to slay Mr. Grizz and save the planet, freeing the Octarians from Mr. Grizz's control. Presumably afterwards, the Octarians made peace with the Inklings, with Cap'n Cuttlefish and DJ Octavio renewing their former friendship, and after seeing how well the Octolings who departed from their forces were integrating well with the Inklings.

Enemy Units[]

Octotroopers: The most basic enemy unit that fires slow-moving globs of ink. Variants include the Octotrooper BonBon, which can fire bouncing ink globes, and the Octohopper, which can jump and spew vertical lines of ink similar to a Slosher. They can also spawn with shields, which are indestructible in Splatoon, but can be destroyed with enough ink shots in future games.

Twintacle Octotroopers: A more advanced version of the standard Octotrooper that can fire ink faster, but the shots are less damaging. Deluxe Twintacle Octotroopers can side-boost to avoid shots from the player. They can also spawn with shields, which are indestructible in Splatoon, but can be destroyed with enough ink shots in future games.

Octodivers: These enemies can either be a standard Octotrooper or Twintacle Octotrooper. What makes them unique is that they can swim in their own ink. In Splatoon 2, they leave trails when they swim in their ink.

Octoballs: Only appears in Splatoon. Octoballs can roll very fast and can only be defeated by slowing them down in Inkling ink, making them easier to splat.

Octocopters: Aerial enemies that fire upon sight. Deluxe Octocopters can side-boost.

Octobombers: Can throw Splat Bombs at the ground. Deluxe Octobombers can side-boost.

Octolings: Similar to Inklings, they can transform into octopuses and swim in their own ink, shoot ink out, and throw Splat Bombs. Elite Octolings deal more damage, have more defense, and can move faster. In Splatoon, they only wielded an Octoshot, but as of Splatoon 2 and Octo Expansion onwards, they now wield Octo Rollers, Octo Blasters, Octo Sloshers, Octo Dualies, Octo Brushes, and Octo Brellas. They can also use other sub weapons (Burst Bombs, Curling Bombs, Point Sensors, Autobombs, Splash Walls, Toxic Mist, and Sprinklers), and they can even use special weapons (Tenta Missiles, Bomb Launchers, Ink Armor, Wave Breaker, Inkjet, Splashdown, Ink Storm, Trizooka, and Triple Inkstrike). They do not wield any Octo variants of Stringers, Splatanas, Chargers, Splatlings, Suction Bombs, Seekers, Point Sensors, Fizzy Bombs, Ink Mines, Torpedoes, Inkstrike, Kraken, Echolocator, Kraken Royale, Bubbler, Big Bubbler, Baller, Bomb Rush, Super Chump, Ultra Stamp, Splattercolor Screen, Tacticooler, or Booyah Bomb.

Octostrikers: Only appears in Splatoon. Octostrikers can deploy Inkstrikes to attack the player, regardless of the distance.

Missile Octocopters: Only appears in Octo Expansion. They can fire Tenta Missiles from a long way off. The Speedy Missile Octocopter can side-boost.

Octoballers: Octotroopers that ride in giant bowling balls, attempting to run over the player. Giant Octoballers can only be destroyed via the Ink Cannon.

Octostamps: Cube-shaped enemies that run up to the player and stomp on them. In Splatoon 2, there is a variant called the Octostamp DX, which is bigger and indestructible. Splatoon 3 introduces a variant called the Amped-Up Octostamp, which can release shock waves similar to the Wave Breaker, and its weak spot is slightly armored.

Octosnipers: Can fire long lines of ink at the player upon spotting them.

Octocommanders: Can use a Splatling-like tool to fire rapidly, each shot firing faster over time, but can get exhausted.

Octopods: Robotic enemies that run towards the player and explode upon impact. In Splatoon 3, they can be launched in the direction the player shoots at, and there is a giant Octopod that is tougher.

Octohurler: Only appears in Splatoon 2 and Octo Expansion. They can vomit out Rolonium bundles and kick them forward, but one weakness is that the Octohurlers themselves cannot move and they only face forward, and the Rolonium bundles they spit out can be shot right back at them.

Octoseeker: Only appears in Splatoon 2 and Octo Expansion. They are large hovering cubes with the Mighty Octostomp's face hanging from the bottom dripping with ink, and they are piloted by Twintacle Octotroopers. Upon spotting the player, they will move toward them and attempt to crush them.

Tentakook: Octotrooper-like enemies that move via roller skates, making them very fast and difficult to take down, as well as deploying bombs when moving. They are known for hiding keys.

Octorpedoes: Torpedo-style enemies that chase the player and explode upon impact.

Octomissiles: Missiles that fly in straight lines, but can be easily destroyed from the sides.

Octozeppelins: Larger variants of Octomissiles that can only be destroyed by shooting the tentacle on top.

Octodiscoes: Introduced in Splatoon 3, they can create shields similar to the Big Bubbler to protect other Octarians. The only way to bypass the shield is to splat the Octodisco or enter the shield and splat the Octarian inside it.

Great Octoweapons and Octobosses[]

Mighty Octostomp/Neo Octostomp/Octostomp Redux: One of the most common bosses of the game series. In Splatoon, it only has one attack: stomping on the player, but in Splatoon 2 and Octo Expansion, it can grow two more faces, has an uninkable coat that can only be removed by destroying the belt buckle, a gatling gun, a dash attack, more belt buckles, and a bubble barrage. Throughout each phase, the walls will become less inkable, and gain two more faces.

Dreaded Octonozzle: A cylindrical hose that can fire ink globs either in a spread or in a straight line. Throughout each phase, it gains height.

Rampaging Octowhirl: A spherical top that can spin dash at the player, but can be slowed to a halt by opposing ink. Throughout each phase, it removes inkable terrain.

Ravenous Octomaw: A mechanical fish that swims up to the player to eat them whole. It can also send out its own teeth to fire on the player. Throughout each phase, its teeth will become stronger (the teeth become metal during phase 2, and then gold during phase 3).

Octo Oven/Octo Oven XXL: A giant bread oven that can eject sentient loaves of bread inside. Throughout each phase, it will fire ink pistons, activate a glazing machine with Octarian ink, summon other Octarian enemies, deploy Sprinklers and Splash Walls, partially cover the bread with armor plating, and make some of its surfaces uninkable.

Octo Samurai/Revenge of the Octo Samurai: A large Octarian that carries a massive katana-themed roller to fling ink horizontally or vertically at the player, as well as ride a motorcycle to run over Agent 4. At phase 3, the vertical swing will become longer.

Octo Shower/Octo Shower Supreme: A large sanitation robot held up by three Octocopters. It can fire a long distance charger-like spray bottle, spin a crank gun, fire a Sting Ray, summon Octorpedoes, and attack with an ink shower. Througout each phase, the Octocopter number increases from three to four, and at phase three, there will be Elite Octocopters instead, making it harder to take it down.

Trivia[]

  • Bizarrely, the Sanitized Octarians do show some recognition of memories of events that happened prior to them being "sanitized".
    • When fighting the Sanitized version of the Octostomp, who was seemingly destroyed by Agent 4, he states in his boss introduction that he was "Back like he never left", implying that he remembers being defeated by both Agents 3 and 4 in Splatoon and Splatoon 2.
    • Indicating that the events of Octo Expansion may take place after Splatoon 2's Hero Mode.
    • As it's revealed in Side Order that Sanitized Octarians are created by stealing the memories of regular Octarians and replacing them with dummy data, it's possible that the Octostomp didn't have his memories fully wiped or had his memories restored for some reason.
  • The Great Octoweapons were actually created from DJ Octavio's own dismembered limbs, due to their tentacles having the same exact scar as Octavio's.
  • The faces of the Octoseekers look similar to the face of the Octostomp.
  • The Missile Octocopters only appear in the Octo Expansion, only being called Sanitized Missile Octocopters, and their design is similar to the design of the Octostrikers from the first Splatoon game.
  • The Octostomp is the only one of the five Great Octoweapons from the first game to return as a boss in Splatoon 2 and had also returned as a boss in the Octo Expansion. While he himself doesn't appear in Splatoon 3 and neither do any other Octoweapons, his shell does as it's used by Frye during her boss battle.
  • There are some unique features in the ink used by the player and the Octarians in future games:
    • In Splatoon 2, Octo Canyon ink contains glitter. The only time this was used outside of Octo Canyon was during the Christmas Splatfest Frosty Fest.
      • The reason for this is likely because of Callie being brainwashed and brought to Octo Canyon, where it is revealed in a Sunken Scroll that via her partnership with DJ Octavio, she convinces the Octarians to spruce up their lairs with decorations like stickers and glitter, hence the glittery ink.
    • In Octo Expansion, Sanitized Octarian ink has a wavy effect. This was reused in Splatoon 3.
  • Originally, in the Octoling levels for the first game, Octolings did not have any Spawn Points, but in the Octoling levels for Splatoon 2 and Octo Expansion, they have their own Spawn Points that might respawn them at anytime. In Coccyx Escape Phases, Marina identifies small gray hexagonal patforms with Kamabo Co.´s logo on them as Spawn Points. Should Agent 8 be spotted by an enemy, then enemies will spawn from them.
  • Here are some facts about the Octobosses according to The Art of Splatoon 2:
    • The Octo Oven was once just a regular oven inspired by Inkling bakeries, but due to positive reception and demand from the Octarians who tried the baked goods from it, it ejected the bread coming out of it so fast that the owner was gravely injured (and most likely succumbed to his injuries and died from them). It was later used as a weapon instead.
    • The Octo Samurai seems to somewhat be inspired by sumo wrestlers, and he also trains young Octarians in the sport, although he himself is not very good at sumo. He is secretly also a big fan of Callie.
    • The Octo Shower once used to fly all by itself, but due to continuous upgrades on itself, it was too heavy to fly on its own, so Octocopters had to carry it via chains connected to a giant magnetic plug.
      • Also, the rubber ducky on the Octo Shower's head is named Quackers, and it is also its lover.
  • Whenever the Octo Samurai is splatted, the ghost of a splatted enemy Octoling will rise up and later disappear, theorizing that the Octo Samurai might be an Octoling.
  • During the reveal cutscene of the NILS Statue´s giant Sanitized Octarian Ink laser before the final boss battle in Octo Expansion, what appears to be a Sanitized Octoball can be seen inside of of the completed Thangs repicas, although Octoballs did not appear in both the DLC and Splatoon 2, regardless if they were Sanitized or not.
  • The Sanitized versions of the Octobosses all have Kamabo Co.'s logo on them.
  • Despite good relations between Octarians and Inklings in the Splatlands, tentacle-type Octarians such as Octotroopers seem entirely absent from the area, sans in some comics. As these tentacle-type Octarians are produced from the removed tentacles of Octolings, it's possible they're present in much higher numbers in DJ Octavio's territory as they're mass produced as footsoldiers while the Octarians in the Splatlands, having no need for more soldiers, do not produce as many Octarians via splitting.
  • While the Octoling Shades the Octolings wear in Splatoon 2 bear a resemblance to the Hypnoshades Callie is mind controlled by in the same game, it's confirmed that these shades do not brainwash them and instead, are holographic displays with functions such as scopes in order to enhance their battle performance.
  • The Octarians living underground in contrast to the Inklings on the surface could reference how real-life squid spend most of their time in the open water and nearer to the surface while octopuses tend to live at the sea floor.
  • The melody played in the song “Onwards!” seems to be the main leitmotif associated with the Octarians, appearing in nearly all songs associated with them and in the boss themes of the Jelleton bosses.
  • According to a developer interview regarding Side Order, each class of Octarian attends their own designated training schools, though it is possible for lower-ranked Octarians such as Octotroopers to metamorphose into Octolings, allowing them to train to become elites.
