“ | Mercy will be your undoing, Masaru Takahara. The so-called masters you defeated, whose techniques you've made your own in your quest to become the very best... You left them alive, and so others were free to follow in your wake. I, on the other hand, ensured my victories were complete. Without exception! Namkiat, the naive brat... That gaudy luchador, the "Great" Aja... Simple-minded Han... Jackie, still dreaming of a squandered youth... Max, who was never more than a mere showman... And of course, that doddering fraud Moribe... Each lay dead at my feet when I was finished, for true triumph is found only in death, in the extinguishing of a life and its legacy. You glory in nothing. <chuckle> And who am I, you ask? I am that which you yearn to become. The greatest warrior... Odie O'Bright! | „ |
~ Odie O'Bright gloating over his murders of other fighters to Masaru Takahara and challenging him to a fight. |
Odie O'Bright (spelt Odie Oldbright in the Aeon Genesis translation) is the main antagonist of the Present Day chapter of Live A Live for the SNES and its remake for the Nintendo Switch. He is an arrogant, social-darwinistic fighter who, like Masaru Takahara, wishes to claim the title of "the Strongest" for himself, but, unlike Masaru, believes that strength can be achieved only by murdering the opponents after establishing oneself to be superior to them. As such, he murdered all of Masaru's previous opponents once the young man had beaten them all, and then went after Masaru himself to defeat and kill him to claim the title of "the Strongest".
In truth, he is one of the many incarnations of Odio, the Lord of Dark, whose hatred brought many villains over the span of history into existence, with Odie O'Bright being his Present Day incarnation.
He was voiced by Banjo Ginga in Japanese and Yaron Mesika in English.
Biography[]
The Strongest[]
Driven by his misanthropic rage, Odio used the statues left by his predecessor to create the many incarnations of himself throughout the history to punish humanity for their perceived sins. Odie O'Bright was the incarnation born in the present day, a fighter with social-darwinistic views who seeks to claim the title of "the Strongest" for himself no matter the cost.
Once Masaru Takahara has beaten the fighting champions all over the world, Odie O'Bright hears of his exploits and also goes to claim the title for himself, fighting all the champions Masaru defeated, which he followed up with murdering them as a way to "ensure that his victories were complete". Decrying his opponents as weaklings, he challenges Masaru himself to a fight, hoping to kill him and claim the title of "the Strongest" for himself. Masaru was enraged by hearing how Odie murdered all of the previous champions, and decries him not as a warrior, but a cold-blooded murderer. Calling upon the powers of all slain champions and his own righteous fury, he fights back against Odie and defeats him, thus cementing his right to earn the title of "the Strongest", much to O'Bright's disbelief. However, in the remake, Odie gloats to Masaru that, since he achieved the title of the strongest, warriors from all over the world will be seeking him out to defeat him and claim his title for the rest of his life, and that one day, he will be forced to kill to defend his title. Afterwards, he passes out, and his predictions become correct as another fighter immediately presents himself to challenge Masaru.
The Final Chapter[]
Having sensed defeats of his incarnations, Odio decided to take matters into his own hands. In the sad ending route, he takes direct control of Odie O'Bright and helps him defeat and kill Masaru as a way to prove that humanity is beyond redemption and to give Odie his recourse. In the true ending, however, Odio brings Masaru with many other heroes into the now-empty kingdom of Lucrece to teach them a lesson on humanity's evil. However, he gets defeated, and as a last-ditch attempt, Odio forces the heroes to fight his incarnations once more, with Masaru having to refight Odie O'Bright. Despite this second assault, the murderous fighter, along with other Odio incarnations, falls once again, thus proving Odio's world view wrong.
Trivia[]
- It is not made clear whether Masaru has killed Odie for his crimes or merely beaten him into unconsciousness. While the majority of Odio incarnations do not survive their fights, it's still possible that Masaru simply allowed him to live, but forced him to live the rest of his life with the fact that his philosophy that strength can be achieved through murder has forever been proven wrong.
