Odium is one of the main antagonists of the Cosmere, a shared universe written by Brandon Sanderson. He specifically serves as the main antagonist of The Stormlight Archive. He is a Shard of the Deity Adonalsium, who currently inhabits the planet Roshar. He wants to kill all other Shards.

Biography[]

Origin[]

Originally there was a powerful Deity named Adonalsium. At some point, a group of people killed Adonalsium, shattering his power, known as "Investiture" into 16 pieces, known as Shards. He represented Adonalsium's Hatred, and was seperated from the other attributes to give Hatred any meaning.
At some point, he inhabited a host named Rayse. Rayse directed Odium to destroy other Shards. Odium battled other Shards in the Cosmere. He wounded Ambition, and battled Devotion and Dominion At some point he came to the Rosharan system to destroy Honor and Cultivation. At some point he discovers that Harmony was created by combining the Shards of preservation and Ruin. He wants to destroy Harmony, but cannot while trapped.

Roshar[]

Odium went to war with Honor on Roshar. Odium used the Singers as his soldiers, while Honor used humans. Odium gave great power to the singers, called Voidbinding, but was also able to control them. For millennia, humans battled against the singers. Some of the Singers were made immortal by Odium, and were known as Voidbringers. If killed, their soul could possess another body. An oathpact whas created in which the souls of the Voidbringers and Heralds would be trapped on the planet Braize when their bodies were killed. The Voidbringers would torture the Heralds. If the Heralds gave up, all of them would return to Roshar and another war would break out. Braize became known as Damnation for this reason. At some point, Tavanast, who held the Shard of Honor, managed to trap Odium on Braize so he could not hunt any more Shards. However, Honor was killed at some point by Odium. After the last war, the many of the singers left Odium so they could no longer be controlled. These were called Listeners, or Parshendi. Those remaining were enslaved by humans, and were called Parshmen.

The Stormlight Archive[]

King Gavinar wanted to reawaken the Voidbringers in order to awaken the human Surgebinders. When the Listeners found out, they assassinated Gavinar and went to war with the humans. This drove the Listeners Venli and Eshonai to summon the Everstorm, which brought back the Voidbringers. Odium seeks to destroy most of Roshar. He ends of making a deal with the human Dalinar, in which there will be a duel. If Odium's champion wins, then Dalinar must help Odium kill more Shards. If Dalinar wins, then Odium must stop release the nations of Alethkar and Herdaz. Taravangian ends up killing Rayse, and taking in Odium. As Taravangian believes in destroying the world for the greater good, this makes Odium more dangerous.
