This is a domicile, a residence, and thus protected by the Fourth Amendment from unlawful search and seizure. Did you see this drive in here? How do you know it runs? Did you actually witness any wrongdoing? It seems to me you're just out here fishing. Don't see that holding up in a court of law.
~ Old Joe to Hank Schrader.

Old Joe is a minor character in the crime drama series Breaking Bad and its 2019 sequel film El Camino: A Breaking Bad Movie. As the shrewd owner of Rocker Salvage, a junkyard Albuquerque, he occasionally assists Walter White and Jesse Pinkman skirt the law when they find themselves in tough situations.

He is portrayed by Larry Hankin.

Personality[]

Joe has a laid-back, resourceful, and knowledgeable personality. He runs a junkyard, and his nonchalant demeanor, combined with his sharp understanding of the law and technology, makes him an invaluable and reliable ally to characters like Walt and Jesse. He is generally quick and dry-witted, practical, and unflappable, even in high-pressure situations, and he often comes across as wise, using his street smarts to solve problems without worry.

Breaking Bad[]

Season 3[]

Clovis contacts Old Joe to destroy Walt and Jesse’s RV when Hank Schrader starts searching for it. Walt pays Old Joe $10,000 to crush the RV, with the assurance that the remains will be shipped overseas as patio furniture. After stepping out to call a taxi for Walt, Old Joe returns to find Hank Schrader attempting to break into the RV. Old Joe challenges Hank on whether the RV is legally a vehicle or a domicile, which would protect it from unlawful search and seizure. After Hank is diverted by a fake call from Francesca Liddy, Old Joe has the RV immediately destroyed. ("Sunset")

Season 5[]

Walt, Jesse, and Mike Ehrmantraut visit Old Joe to borrow a giant magnet from his junkyard to destroy Gustavo Fring's laptop inside the police evidence locker. He sells them the magnet, 42 car batteries, and an old truck to transport it. ("Live Free or Die") Joe later admits he didn’t think the plan would work and was amazed when it did. ("El Camino")

Joe also builds equipment for Walt and Jesse’s portable lab. ("Hazard Pay")

After Walt kills Mike Ehrmantraut, Todd Alquist mentions that Joe helped dispose of Mike’s car by performing an "RV job." ("Gliding Over All")

El Camino[]

While watching the news about the manhunt for Jesse Pinkman, Joe receives a call and immediately recognizes Jesse’s voice. Joe later arrives at Skinny Pete’s house to dispose of Todd Alquist's El Camino, offering to do it for free while reminiscing on old times. However, after the car's Lo-Jack is triggered, Joe quickly leaves, advising Jesse to do the same. ("El Camino")

Trivia[]

  • Larry Hankin has expressed fondness for the character, noting that Old Joe's personality was inspired by his own uncle. Despite facing challenges with memorizing lines due to dyslexia, Hankin managed to deliver memorable performances. He recalls moments on set where he struggled with his lines, but ultimately found support from the show's director and cast.
