Old Man Coyote, also known as Mephistopheles, is the overarching antagonist of Netflix's 2023 dark fantasy animated series Castlevania: Nocturne.
He is a mysterious demonic entity with whom Abbot Emmanuel made a deal in order to create Night Creatures in order to serve Erzsebet Báthory's plans of global conquest. He eventually develops a strong interest in Emmanuel's daughter, Maria Renard, sensing the girl's darkness.
Background[]
At some point before the start of the series, Abbot Emmanuel, who is secretly a Forgemaster working for the Vampire Messiah, Erzsebet Báthory, made a deal with the demon to become a Devil Forgemaster, in exchange for the souls of both himself and Mizrak when they die, giving him a book and machine to create night creatures.
Season 2[]
After Maria Renard coldly murders her father by summoning a dragon, the demonic being appeared in front of Maria and Juste Belmont and takes the Abbot’s burned carcass with him. Later on, the demonic entity attempted to corrupt Olrox by tempting him to use the book he gave to Emmanuel, but Olrox casually destroys the book in the devil machine subsequently to deny it any power over him. During the final battle, Mizrak was fatally wounded and Old Man Coyote attempted to take his soul but Olrox denies the entities as to save Mizrak's life. Old Man Coyote laughs at him before he fades away.
On the aftermath of Báthory's death and Drolta Tzuentes' defeat, Old Man Coyote watches as the revolutionaries execute the humans who supported Báthory and her schemes, as he placed his hand on Tera's shoulder while glancing on Maria with a terrifying smile.
Appearance[]
He appears as a tall mass of billowing shadows and whenever his shadowy form manifests a face, it resembles that of a shriveled ghoul with black pits for eyes and a permanent toothy smile.
Personality[]
Nothing is known of this entity, but from the minimal screen time he has, he is shown to be a sadistic, manipulative and downright horrifying creature that preys on the negative aspects of humanity and their souls, and every time someone dies, he shows a terrifying smile.
It is heavily implied that Old Man Coyote is quite interested in Maria, judging by the smile he gives while watching her at the end of season two.

- If Old Man Coyote is Satan (or the closest thing to it), it's very likely that his shadow-form is the only way he can properly manifest to do his dark work on Earth and he might use Maria for her Speaker powers either by killing her or corrupting her in order to free himself.
