Once the king of Latria and husband of the queen, the Old Monk was banished from his kingdom due to his depraved nature. When the Colorless Fog came, the Old Monk returned, but with a hoard of hostile demons in his arsenal. Sometime while he was gone, the Old Monk was possessed by demon-possessed golden robes that gave him powerful magic powers while manipulating him with alleged promises to make his "wishes" would come true. With his army of demons, the Old Monk caused the downfall of his former kingdom now ruled by demons. Everyone surviving by the end of the takeover, including the queen and her family, were thrown into the dungeon of the Tower of Latria guarded by inhuman Mind Flayers.
Using a doll possessed by a demon soul called the Fool's Idol, the Old Monk deceived the prisoners of the Tower of Latria into believing the queen was still alive. When lured into a church altar by the Fool's Idol's song, gargoyles snag the prisoners and fly them to the top of the tower, where the Old Monk used his magic to separate their soul from their body and twist it into a demon of his creation. Two of his invented spawn where a duo of winged beasts called the Maneaters, serving as his guards.
Over time, the Old Monk's body and mind became frail, his essence consumed by the demon's soul. When the Slayer of Demons arrives and bests the Fool's Idol and the Maneaters, in a final attempt to stop them, the Demon Fabric which manipolated the Old Monk summons a hostile invader from another world and takes possession of them by covering their head while consuming the last remnants of the Monk's soul. The now corpse-like Old Monk realizes the fabric treachery and protests, but the demon leaves as the old man falls lifeless.
Once the phantom is defeated, the robes disintegrate, and the player receives the Yellow Demon's Soul.
