~ Olrox. |
“ | Little boy Belmont. I know that feeling. That pain, that hate, that burning, unendurable need for retribution. Because, you see, your mama took someone from me I loved, just as much as you loved her. So, she had to die. Oh I can kill you too and I will, one day. But not tonight. | „ |
~ Olrox talking to a young Ritcher Belmont. |
Olrox is a major character in Netflix's 2023 dark fantasy animated series Castlevania Nocturne. He is loosely based on the character of the same name from the video game series.
He is a powerful vampire aristocrat who sought the rumored Vampire Messiah in France, working with her right-hand woman, Drolta Tzuentes as a result. He is the arch-nemesis of Richter Belmont, having been responsible for the death of Julia Belmont, Richter's mother, as a form of vengeance for killing his lover.
He is voiced by Zahn McClarnon (who played Hanzee Dent from Fargo and Crow Daddy from Doctor Sleep) in English and Yasuyuki Kase (who played Funny Valentine from JoJo's Bizarre Adventure: Eyes of Heaven, Guzma from Pokémon, Lahmu from Shin Megami Tensei V, Spacytchi from Tamagotchi, Dan Straight from Fairy Tail, and Ryuga from Fist of the North Star) in the Japanese Dub.
Appearance[]
Olrox is a well-dressed Aztec vampire, who is over 250 years old. Contrasting to his gaunt, bat-like features in the game, Olrox is very handsome, being modelled after his voice-actor, though his snake-like glowing green eyes show his monstrous nature. He wears a unique purple 18th-century outfit and has very long hair. He is tall and wears unique earrings on his left ear with his hair covering his right ear. Olrox also has a piece of his hair braided.
Powers and Abilities[]
As in the game, Olrox is far and away one of the most powerful vampires in the story, surpassing Carmilla herself. He is incredibly strong, fast, spry and agile, being able to effortlessly somersault around enemies or to jump on buildings, and wielding a black dagger in battle with exceptional proficiency.
Moreover, he has tremendous powers, being able to summon ghostly skulls from dark portals as in the game, turn into black mist (like Alucard in the game), and conjure lightning. When backed into a corner, he transforms into a gigantic and winged snake-monster, vastly boosting his might and speed. Under that form, he has deadly fangs and a spear-tipped tail. He shrugs off powerful spells, he can fire purplish lightning from his eyes and breathe streams of fire.
Personality[]
Further contrasting his total lack of personality in the game, Olrox is morally ambiguous and claims that vampires like humans can be good or evil. He is cold, collected and aloof, never losing composure even when distressed.
Olrox is an intelligent and oddly rebellious vampire. He is vengeful as he killed Ritcher's mother for killing his supposed lover and was curious on the vampire messiah rumor going around in France. Like most vampires, he enjoys terrifying his victims and sucking out their blood. For example, he talks to an already terrified Richter and told him that he will not kill him but spoke in a nonchalant manner. Despite this, his rebellious attitude is unique as he refuses to listen to and obey Erzsebet Bathory and mentions being disillusioned on concepts relating to gods and royalty. Due to his Aztec background and witnessing the destruction of his culture by the Spanish conquistadors, it would explain his utter refusal to bow to anyone especially his supposed superiors. This is also amplified when he relates to Edouard seeking freedom as a night creature, which would suggest that he pities him and showed utter disgust towards Bathory when he was told to bow to her. When looking at the Abbot's book, Olrox shows an expression of disgust towards it, implying that he does not like the practice of devil forging. He is also analytical as he states that the Marquis only sided with Bathory mainly for opportunist's sake.
Olrox is also shown to be rather treacherous as he stole the Abbot's book and gave it to Ritcher's group so they can use it to destroy the machine below the Abby's church. He is not one without humanity though as he develops feelings for an Abby soldier name Mizrak as he is attracted to his dedicated spirit and being honest to himself. This is shown when he had sex with the man and took him far away from the crumbling city as he fears Mizrak may die from Erzsebet's forces. According to him, his lover was a revolutionary who was such an advocate for freedom that it got to the point where Olrox almost start believing in those concepts again until his lover was killed by Julia Belmont. Though he loves him, Olrox does not seem to understand that he forced his lover into becoming a vampire without his consent while excusing it by saying that he wanted his lover to be with him forever.
Biography[]
Past[]
Olrox was given an origin, being a nearly three centuries old vampire from the Mexica people, commonly known in Occident as the Aztecs. Before becoming a vampire, he witnessed the Spanish conquistador's invasion and subjugation of his lands. He later fell in love with a Mohican man but since he wanted his lover to be with him forever, Olrox forced him into becoming a vampire. His lover helps the revolutionaries fight against the British during the American Revolution, but it is unknown if Olrox ever participated in it himself. Later on, he witnessed his lover being killed by Julia Belmont, a member of the Belmont family, because of this incident Olrox sought revenge on her.
Castlevania Nocturne[]
In the year of 1783 in Boston, Massachusetts, Olrox tracked down Julia, who happens to be with her son, Richter, and confronts the two. Julia and Olrox battled each other but he managed to get the upper hand in his dragon form and killed her. He then confronts the terrified Richter and tells him that he is not going to kill him and explains why he killed his mother. He further explains that he will kill him when he is much older and more experienced.
Years later, he arrives in France to investigate the "Vampire Messiah" rumors. Olrox arrives in the Vendée department of Western France, where the French Revolution and the republican government's violent war against the royalist vendéen people are raging. He is welcomed in the nobility in which vampires thrive by the Count of Vaublanc, a former vampiric slaver, he tells him that he will find the Messiah on his own and orders him to tell her that he has arrived. While following new night creatures working for the vampire nobles, Olrox discovers Mizrak and the Abbot preforming devil forging underneath the Abby's church.
While Mizrak is practicing with his saber, he notices Olrox nearby hiding around the bushes. Mizrak asks who he is and what he is doing in the Abby, but Olrox fights back with a question on what he witnessed underneath the Abby's church. Mizrak excuses it with his beliefs on faith and that there are things that they need to rely on during harsh times. But Olrox questions Mizrak's allegiance to Erzsebet Bathory by mentioning what she's capable of. After having sex, Olrox ask him if Erzsebet knows the Abbot is a forgemaster and Mizrak responds with a yes, but Olrox believes that the Abbot plans to betray her with his monsters. He continues to state that Bathory will betray the Abby and tells him about different types of demons including demons that were gods, which offends Mizrak as he states that there is only one God.
Later on, Olrox enters the basement of the Abby's church and see's Edouard as a night creature and smells his human soul. While exploring, he finds the Abbot's book on devil forging but when he heard Ritcher nearby he appears whispering the nickname he has given him. After Richter and his group retreated, he introduces himself to Drolta and is ready to meet Erzsebet. Later on, Drolta finds Olrox sucking the blood of an aristocrat and tells him that the vampires in France do not suck the blood of the higher class. He and Drolta start having small talk about the humans until they notice the sun is about to rise. He mentions that he will be staying at an inn, where it's quiet and private for him to rest.
They part ways without noticing Annette in the area, who was eavesdropping on their conversation. Mizrak returns to Olrox and ask him why Richter is afraid of him, Olrox responds by explaining pieces of his background, but Mizrak criticizes him for turning his lover into a vampire without consent and wondered if he is going to do the same with him. Olrox tells him he does not plan to because he is not in love with him.
After Bathory's arrival, Olrox is finally introduced to her and is flattered when he is told that Bathory has heard of him. But when she shows him her power, while saying that she will force everyone to bow, he refuses to at first but then gives a weak bow and is told that he will be her guide to America when she finishes her plans of blocking out the sun. While Richter, Annette, Maria, and Tera are planning to end the production of night creatures, Olrox suddenly appears in the house in his mist form. Olrox appears behind Richter when everyone slits up to find him, but Olrox refuses to fight asking him to destroy the machine underneath Abby's church. He drops the Abbot's book in the house and departs.
When Erzsebet finally blocks the sun and transforms into Sekhmet, Olrox heads to the church due to the situation worsening. He witnesses the battle but does not interfere until Mizrak is nearly killed by one of Drolta's subordinates, but when Bathory arrives, he takes Mizrak far away from the city. Olrox explains to him that Erzsebet is too powerful, and she would kill them on sight and reveals his love for him, but Mizrak rejects this since he views Olrox as a being who lost himself through vampirism. Olrox stands in the distance upset over what has transpired with Mizrak and the events that have happened in the church before taking his leave.
