By the beard of the Prophet!
~ Omar Ben Salaad

Omar Ben Salaad is the overarching antagonist of the 1941 Tintin comic book The Crab with the Golden Claws and a neutral character in the 2011 Tintin film The Adventures of Tintin: The Secret of the Unicorn. He is an Arab merchant and one of the most respected men in the port city of Baggar, Morocco.

However, he is ultimately exposed as the mastermind of a drug-smuggling venture of opium, as well as the one who sent the initial order to have Tintin thrown overboard from the Karaboudjan in the story.

Appearance[]

Omar Ben Salaad is a man with white clothes, round glasses, prominent lips, and a black beard.

Personality[]

Not much is shown about Omar Ben Salaad's personality, but he hates being offended, mostly when he is accused of being the leader of a drug cartel. In the 2011 film, he is more neutral towards the heroes and is even one of the people who had a copy of the Unicorn.

Biography[]

Omar Ben Salaad is first seen riding around the town, closely followed by the Thompsons into a mosque, Both of the Thompsons lost track of him after being kicked out for still wearing their shoes inside the building.

Eventually, they manage to confront him and accuse him to be the leader of the drug cartel, offending him in the process, but all of a sudden, a secret door opens behind him and hits him in the back of the head. A drunk Tintin then comes out and is held at gun point by the merchant, only for Snowy to bite him from behind and accidentally shoots the ceiling, causing parts of it to fall on him and Tintin, knocking Omar out unconscious and recovering Tintin from his drunkenness. They then notice a gold crab necklace around his neck, showing that the merchant was none other than the leader of the drug-smuggling cartel and the one who sent the initial order to have Tintin thrown overboard in the Karaboudjan in the first place, but his escape prevented it. He is then arrested by the French Morocco police along with Allan.

Trivia[]

  • His portrayal in the 2011 movie adaptation of The Secret of the Unicorn is altered completely from the original comic, as instead of being the leader of the drug cartel, he is the rich owner of an exotic palace as well as a ship collector and lover of classical music and opera.
