| “ | I died. And yet I didn't die. At the center of all creation, a new "I" was born. New and eternal, I was overfilled with the desire not to create, but to return everything back to nothingness. The desire born from the rejection of my past intent. And so meaningless destruction replaced meaningless creation. | „ |
| ~ Omega |
Omega is the main antagonist of Devolver Digital's video game, Loop Hero. He was originally Alpha, the Allfather and creator of the universe. After Alpha was killed by a human, He became Omega, the Alldeath and set out to destroy the entire universe. He succeeded, all except for a single fragment of world, and a single human hero whose purpose is to slowly rebuild the world, bit by bit, and is opposed in this by Omega and His apostles.
Personality[]
| “ | You are a part of creation. You wouldn't understand. Why should life and existence have any meaning to you? Why don't you see oblivion as perfect? I'm obsessed with the idea of reducing everything to nothing. To me, nonexistence feels right and just. Perfect. | „ |
| ~ Omega |
Omega exists only to cause destruction, to return all of creation to nothingness. He does not do this out of malice, however. Omega views nonexistence as an ideal state. He believes that death and nonexistence are the ultimate destiny that all living things strive to achieve, and expresses a sincere incomprehension of why the hero would choose to fight back against Him instead of accepting annihilation.
Even as the Destroyer, Omega loves humanity. His admiration for human determination is what prevented Him from simply destroying the hero outright. It also led Him to lie to His apostles and give them false hope, not because He needed to keep their loyalty, but because He couldn't bring Himself to crush their hope for the world and for their own continued existence.
History[]
In the beginning, there was nothing, for there can not be true creation if anything exists before it. Alpha appeared from the nothing and created all of the universe, every star, every planet. His favorite creation was life, in all its variety and relativity, and his favorite among all living things was humanity. Alpha so loved humans that He chose to take a human form and go to live among them. He traveled from planet to planet. He shared in their struggles, and basked in their love and admiration.
One day, Alpha traveled to a world that was different from the others He had made. This was a world of danger, where people had to fight to survive. For the first time, Alpha was not welcomed as a beloved deity, but as a threat. The first primitive man that He met on this world, confronted by this being of blinding celestial light and searing heat, shielded his family with his arm and thrust a spear forward to kill what he believed was a demon.
Alpha was, of course, in no danger. Every atom of creation was made by Him and loved Him, and would not dare to harm Him. However, something changed. Though this human who is known to history only as The Defiler saw an enemy, Alpha saw something else. He saw a small triumph of life that had come into being completely independently from His own creation, a powerful force of will that would defy its own creator. The only thing He could think was that He wished to give that human the victory it desired. So, Alpha allowed the spear to strike His heart, and kill Him.
Since He had taken human form, Alpha could die. However, as the God of Creation, He was a universal constant and could not cease to exist. From the center of the universe, Alpha was reborn as His equal opposite: Omega, the Destroyer. Unlike Alpha, who loved making things above all else, Omega despised creation. He looked around and saw chaos. Existence was meaningless. Life was loud, noisy, and obnoxious. His only desire was to return everything to nothingness, which He viewed as an ideal state of being where everything is static, homogeneous, and in perfect order.
Omega traveled across the universe, destroying everything in His path. Planets, stars, entire galaxies were wiped away in His wake. He gathered three apostles to help Him in his quest for destruction: Omicron the lich, Sigma the zealot, and Tau the hunter. He had no need of these apostles, of course, nor did He need to work so slowly. As supreme being, He could have erased all the universe in an instant, but He didn't and He never understood why not until the end.
One single world remained. Even though Omega had destroyed everything, this one speck of creation was still here. It would grow and expand, then disappear again, then expand once more. At the center of it all, a lone hero walked an endless loop, rebuilding the world from his own memories and gathering bits and pieces of it to build a new home for himself and his fellow survivors. Omega sent His three apostles to eliminate the heretic who refused to be destroyed. When they were defeated, He was forced to confront the man Himself.
Omega realized that the hero was the last remaining descendant of The Defiler who had slain Alpha thousands of years ago. Omega believed that He had been subconsciously protecting this human, as the symbol of His own doubt in the righteousness of His cause. He faced the hero in battle, believing He would destroy the last remnants of His Alpha personality.
It was only when the hero's attacks once again pierced through His heart, that He finally understood the truth. Yota, the Goddess of probability and the small coincidences that tie together to sustain the universe, explained to Him: He was wrong. The hero was, just as his ancestor The Defiler had been, the embodiment of that small triumph of life, the drive to live and to keep on living. Omega realized that, even though He had created the universe, it was not His place to decide the universe's fate. His creations had wills of their own, and they wanted to live. He didn't have the right to kill them.
As Omega died, He expressed His gratitude to Yota and the hero for helping Him understand this. He told them that He would be reborn as Alpha once more and would rebuild everything that He had destroyed. Since He would start from the center of the universe, it would be thousands of years before He would return to this planet again. By then, the descendants of the hero and Yota would create a new world here entirely of their own making. Omega looked forward to seeing what they would build. With his last words, he gave the hero one final message: "This world owes everything to you now, but don't forget that you owe it everything too. Farewell."
Powers and Abilities[]
| “ | Hero: Wait. You want to explain everything before you kill me? Omega: Annihilate you. It's not the same. Though I suppose there isn't much difference for a consciousness that formed a personality. |

As supreme being, Omega is completely omnipotent. Nothing that exists in the universe that He created can harm Him, as shown when He explains the way The Defiler's spear warped and distorted, and struck the void instead of His body. He is also capable of erasing anything from existence, and of bringing anything into existence.
Omega's only weakness is His value for hard work and determination. It was this value which caused the death of His previous persona, as Alpha the Creator; it would be most accurate to say that The Defiler's spear did not kill Alpha, but rather that Alpha willed Himself to die as an honor to The Defiler's determination. In the events of Loop Hero itself, it is also stated that Omega could have erased all existence in the blink of an eye, but chose not to because of this same value.
In combat against Omega, he uses the skill "I Am", which instantly destroys all unequipped inventory items and cards when the battle begins, and on every third attack temporarily removes from existence both one of the hero's equipped items, and one of the hero's stats.
Minions[]
Omega was served by His three apostles:
- Omicron the Lich. A wizard from the hero's own world. Omicron wanted to prevent the buildup of entropy and the eventual heat death of the universe. He created spells to automate his body while he slept so that he could research day and night, and eventually he created spells to automate his body even after death. It was as a lich that he made a shocking discovery: entropy wasn't real. The universe was not expanding into oblivion. The stars he saw being extinguished were destroyed by Omega. Omicron joined Omega out of the belief that, once the Destroyer had destroyed everything, He would then eradicate the last thing that remained: Himself. This would cause the Alpha personality to reappear, and remake existence. Omega admits He couldn't bring Himself to shatter Omicron's delusions, but that the lich was wrong. Omega never intended to kill Himself, but rather that once existence had been erased, He would bask in the peace and quiet of nothingness for eternity. As a lich, Omicron possesses powerful magic, and has tied his existence to his worldly belongings. His palace always appears in the world with him, and he gains bonus health and damage based on how many tiles of the palace are able to appear on the map.
- Sigma the Zealot. Unlike Omicron, Sigma never knew about the events that had transformed Alpha into Omega, and never cared. According to Omega, she was once a human, who believed in Him so fervently that her human mind and personality evaporated and she became the physical embodiment of the concept of blind faith. For as long as humans believe in and love God, Sigma will exist, and whenever the current Sigma dies, whichever human has the most faith in Him will become the new Sigma. In battle, Sigma does not attack directly. Instead, she summons angels to fight at her side, and defends herself with magic stained glass windows that can take damage and shatter in her place.
- Tau the Hunter. Once, he was an intergalactic superhero. His galaxy was full of overpowering threats, but with his star-destroying hunting rifle and his hounds born from black holes, he kept the people safe at all costs. Tau didn't do this because he loved the people... he did this because he loved himself, and the adulation that he received for being a hero. When he saw the stars going out one by one, Tau went to put a stop to it. When he discovered the identity of the star-destroyer as God Himself, Tau was overcome by fear. He pledged his eternal service to Omega, and destroyed his own home planet as a sacrifice to win the Destroyer's favor. In combat, Tau fights with his rifle, and his two black hole hounds. He and his hounds both heal and gain a damage boost whenever one of them dies, and he can boost his hounds' speed. His hounds also have the power to disappear into the astral plane temporarily, executing a critical strike when they return.
Quotes[]
| “ | You are not him. Yet you are closer to him than anyone else. That's why you are still here. You are the closest relative of that man who was holding that spear, all those ages ago. You're a tiniest remembrance of my birth. A token of sentimentality I acquired along with my human form. A deeply personal little piece of world, one that I wish to annihilate by my own. I guarded you against my own apostles, knowingly or not. And so you survived. I'm actually curious to see what may become of this. Be brave. I will give you a chance to defend your world. Because that would be right. | „ |
