“ | There will be no time for regrets! You will all be crushed under the heel of the Viltrum Empire! | „ |
~ Omni-Man |
“ | This planet has... changed me. And there's no going back from that, son. Without you... I don't know what it would have taken... what I would have done... to make me realize that. | „ |
~ Omni-Man to his son, Mark Grayson/Invincible. |
“ | WHY DID YOU MAKE ME DO THIS?! YOU'RE FIGHTING SO YOU CAN WATCH EVERYONE AROUND YOU DIE! THINK, MARK! You'll outlast every fragile, insignificant being on this planet! You'll live to see this world crumble to dust and BLOW AWAY! EVERYONE AND EVERYTHING you know WILL BE GONE! WHAT WILL YOU HAVE AFTER FIVE HUNDRED YEARS?! | „ |
~ Omni-Man's villainous breakdown, his most famous speech and his last words to Mark from the first season of the TV series. |
Nowl-Ahn (pronounced Nolan), better known as Omni-Man and also known by his adopted name Nolan Grayson, is the deuteragonist of the Image Comics series Invincible and its animated adaptation of the same name.
He is the father of Invincible and Omni-Boy and a member of the Viltrumite race, a humanoid species of extraterrestrial origin who possess super strength, super speed, virtual immortality, and flight. As is customary for male Viltrumites, Omni-Man sports a large mustache.
He was tasked with conquering planets to spread the Viltrumite empire, and arrived on Earth to infiltrate their society to weaken a chance for them to defend themselves. Becoming a writer and superhero named "Omni-Man", Nolan would have a son named Mark Grayson with a human woman named Debbie, who would become a superhero under the moniker "Invincible". Omni-Man would eventually reveal his plans and battled his son after killing the Guardians of the Globe, but would leave the planet due to his love for his son. Nolan would redeem himself and become the emperor of Viltrum after his true heritage was revealed.
He is voiced by J.K. Simmons, who also played Alexander Rausch in Homicide: Life on the Street, Vernon Schillinger in Oz, General Wade Eiling in Justice League Unlimited, Skip in Aliens in the Attic, Cave Johnson in the Portal video game series, Terence Fletcher in Whiplash, Kai the Collector in Kung Fu Panda 3, Captain Matt McKenna in 21 Bridges, Ivo Shandor in Ghostbusters: Afterlife, Captain Putty in Chip 'n Dale: Rescue Rangers and Ketheric Thorm in Baldur's Gate 3.
Personality[]
Due to the first thousands of years of his life, he had been indoctrinated with the Viltrumite ideology, a group of super-powered aliens whose only goals is to eradicate weaker species. Nolan was a loyal Viltrumite who believed in their cause and wished to be one of their top members who would spread around and conquer planets. While at first Nolan had conquered alongside his fellow clansmen, he later went on solo missions to colonize. He would start by destroying the planet's most prized protector.
His upbringing and possible physiology has Nolan a brutal cataclysmic being. He views all life as pointless and pathetic, believing he is a superior race. This also paired with the fact that he lives way longer than anybody else, so getting attached to anybody would be pointless.
Thanks to his unparalleled strength and night-invincibility, he can brutally kill anybody with absolutely zero effort and risk, regardless of their power, strategy and/or numbers. This is shown when he destroys an entire race of technologically advanced aliens within mere moments. Most of his kills are done by simply throwing heavy things at someone, flying into them or simply hitting them, causing them to explode. He displays little-to-no emotion during most fights,
Though usually fighting with brute force, Nolan also displays intelligence and some battle tactics. This is shown when he throws Darkwing's dead body at Green Girl, so she will stop using her intangibility to catch her dead friend, giving him the opportunity to strike. He also occasionally uses weapons, seen when he grabs War Woman's battle hammer, or just using corpses. When he is being sent through a portal home by Martians scientists, before he steps in, he throws a meteor at them which hits after he leaves. He is also sufficient in torture methods, even without resorting to brutalization, seen when he drops a criminal from the sky and catching him moments before falling to his death.
After coming to Earth, Nolan unconsciously became attached to humanity. With his family, Nolan displays many qualities of a middle-aged suburban man. He gets along with his family very well, regularly training Mark or taking Debbie on dates (sometimes across the world.) He also displays a brotherly bond with his best friend and tailor, Art, commonly sharing drinks and talking. Nolan has no qualms over using his powers for everyday tasks, like traveling and floating. He is charismatic but also occasionally displays somewhat poor social skills, such as asking about dinner after his coworkers are brutally murdered (by him in secret.) He is also rude to a hospital attendant, demanding his clothes from her (due to it being condemning evidence against him.)
As a superhero, Omni-man displayed a typical super-man-like personality who always comes to save the day. He doesn't wear a disguise to hide his identity like many superheroes. Due to his unmatched strength, he could wipe out enemies with absolutely zero effort, though seemingly holds back his strength in front of others. This unmatched strength also makes him uncooperative with the other Guardians of the Globe, making him somewhat distant from them. Omni-man didn't really think of them as friends and only thought of them as coworkers.
After his son, Mark awakens his powers, Nolan's Viltrum persona is reawakened, starting with him assassinating the Guardians. He doesn't show his true nature, however, unless he is provoked about it. This is shown when he gets angry at the detective, Darkblood for trying to investigate the truth about the Guardians's death. He is also very rude to a nurse since she has his bloody shirt.
Nolan can be somewhat careless. He is not too careful about hiding his murders of the Guardians, seeing how he leaves condemning evidence in his closet, despite obviously having the ability to hide it anywhere.
Nolan was shown to be very highly manipulative, seen how he was able to fool Earth into thinking he was a saviour for over twenty years (though partially because he felt attached to humans deep in his heart.) He gives a eulogy for the Guardians of the Globe who he secretly killed. He is even kind to the people who attended their funeral. He is able to protect his identity from his loved one though, with his charismatic and manipulative nature, by tricking his family into thinking the people trying to expose his true identity are the bad guys.
Once his true identity is revealed, almost any semblance of humanity he had is temporarily gone, showing his horrifically monstrous side. He becomes completely ruthless, cold, cataclysmic, destroying all in his path, hoping to find Mark immediately. He even calmly threatens Mark's best friend his location away. Once meeting with his son (who doesn't know his true nature yet), he makes him believe they should be fighting the monster trying to kill him and they should kill him together. He can no longer hide his identity, after mutilating the superhero, Immortal.
With his identity exposed to his son, he calmly explains his origins to him and tries to indoctrinate his philosophy onto him. When Mark rejects this, he attacks him and murders massive amounts of innocent civilians to prove a point. He seems unsure why Mark wouldn't want to be a loyal Viltrum like him, not even considering they are complete strangers to him and Nolan had kept this hidden from him his whole life. He is willing to horrifically mutilate Mark and make another child, until he remembers a happy memory with him and realizes Mark still loves him. Nolan finally is coped with guilt and leaves Earth in tears. Overall, this fight was more about Nolan trying to convince himself he was a loyal Viltrumite, rather than convincing Mark.
In short, Nolan was a conflicted man who developed a love for Earth against his will but wanted to convince himself he's still a loyal Viltrum soldier. After destroying many lives at his new home, Nolan had "woken up" and started to feel guilt, becoming an actual hero in the process.

Biography[]
Early Life[]
Nolan was born on the planet Viltrum to Argall and his mother, his heritage was hidden due to his father being assassinated by Thaedus. The Viltrumites would create a strong empire under the grand regent Thragg as they started to want to conquer planets and spread their influence across the galaxy. Reaching the appropriate age, Nolan decided to help his people in their conquest, becoming a capable warrior he would command his own unit. When Viltrum suffered from the scourge virus, the empire decided to use their lifespans to infiltrate planets and societies to weaken their defense so that the targets could not counter-attack the Viltrumites.
Infiltrating Earth[]
Nolan took on the mission to infiltrate the planet Earth and started his mission by befriending Cecil Stedman to learn about human culture. He took on the surname "Grayson" to appear more human, and Stedman set him up to be "Omni-Man", one of Earth's most powerful superheroes.
During his mission, Nolan met and fell in love with an Earth woman named Debbie, whom he later married and had their son, Mark. Nolan would continue to fight against supervillains as "Omni-Man", and became an ally of the Guardians of the Globe, a superhero team. In addition, Nolan would falsely tell Debbie, Cecil, and the costume maker Art Rosenbaum why he was on Earth.
While raising Mark, Nolan told him that he would receive powers like him, but told him false stories of why he was on Earth as well.
Invincible[]
When Mark gained his powers and became a superhero under the moniker "Invincible", Nolan would help his son fight against the Flaxans but was abducted by the creatures. He was stuck in their dimension for eight months, with the Flaxans neutralizing his powers and keeping him prisoner. Nolan's powers returned, however, and he revolted before escaping the dimension and returning his wife and son.
While working on his plans, he had Mark substitute for him to battle Allen the Alien and was kept occupied while his son later went to Upstate University. When his son returned home and overslept due to stopping many threats, Nolan put his plans into motion by going to the Guardians of the Globe's headquarters and killing all of them. Afterward, Nolan kept himself out of the spotlight to not become a suspect in Black Samson's investigation and struggled with telling Mark his true origins.
When battling the Immortal again, Nolan killed him again in front of his son and revealed his true Viltrumite origins and what his empire tasked him to do. He asked Mark to join him in conquering Earth, but his son refused and the two battled across locations until he was beaten. Though Nolan had Mark at his mercy, Omni-Man realizes to loved his son too much to kill him instead spared his son and fled the planet, crying while flying into space.
Realizing that he loved his son, Nolan decided to conquer another planet to lessen his crime of deserting the Viltrumite Empire and not going through with their plans. Arriving at Thraxa, Nolan learned that the Thraxans had a short life span and that the oldest individual would rule the planet. Nolan became their ruler since he had lived for thousands of years, and sent a Thraxan to collect his son from Earth. While living on Thraxa, Nolan mated with a fellow Thraxan Andressa, and the two had a child named Oliver. The two reunite and reconcile, but Nolan refuses to return to Earth due to his actions and that he must stay on Thraxa.
He reveals to Mark that he had a son with a Thraxan and that the child would be killed by the Viltrumites due to having a genetic flaw of having purple skin. Nolan and Mark defend the planet from the Viltrumites, and the former is captured by Lucan and imprisoned alongside Allen the Alien. The two become friends and escape from confinement and the two decide to prepare themselves against the Viltrumites, as the empire is preparing to invade Earth.
Embarking on adventures across the galaxy, they gather weapons and allies (like Battle Beast and Space Racer) which will give them an advantage over the Viltrumites, before returning to Earth to collect Mark and Oliver and reconcile with Debbie. They are briefly waylaid by the Viltrumite champion Conquest, an old enemy of Invincible who is killed in the ensuing battle, but not before Mark is critically injured. Nolan spends the subsequent months bonding with Oliver while Mark heals.
In the final battle of the war, Omni-Man, alongside with Invincible, Allen, Oliver, Thaedus, Battle Beast and Space Racer managed to win destroying the Viltrum planet and scattering their enemies, although Thaedus is killed while Nolan, Mark and Oliver are badly wounded by the Viltrumite regent Thragg, who secretly relocates the surviving members of his race on Earth, planning to interbreed with humans to covertly rebuild the empire.
Afterwards Thragg discovers that Nolan is a descendant of the long-dead Emperor of Viltrum Argall, and thus heir to the throne, provoking a fierce battle between them. Although Nolan is overpowered, but the Viltrumites recognize him and rally behind him, overpowering and capturing Thragg. Nolan is subsequently crowned as ruler of the Viltrum Empire and Thragg is exiled.
Nolan Grayson managed to overlook the Viltrumites on Earth and saw how the Viltrumites changed for the better and see Earth as their new home.
In the final confrontation between the Viltrumites and Thragg's army, Nolan was killed by Thragg but Mark managed to defeat him once for all. Before succumbing to his wounds, Nolan names Mark as his successor to be the Emperor of Viltrumites. In the future, his grandson Marky (Mark and Anissa's son) visits Nolan's grave and promises to live up to his father's legacy.

Quotes[]
Comics[]
“ | I know this is a lot to take in at one time, but you're old enough to know the truth. And unfortunately... I'm not done yet. On top of all this... there's more. You see, you're getting older, son... things are going to start to change for you in a few years as you hit puberty. You're going to start to get acne. Your voice will start to crack and eventually change. You'll begin to grow hair in strange and new places. You're going to start looking at girls in a whole new light. There's a good chance that you're going to start to develop super powers. Super-Strength, Super-Speed, Flight... the whole bit. All the powers I have... Mark? Do you understand? | „ |
~ Nolan to his son, Mark. |
“ | The feeling is mutual. | „ |
~ Omni-Man killing the Immortal. |
“ | Son, stop. Listen to me. Do you have any idea what our life span is? The older we get the slower we age. We can't live among these frail things... your mother is little more than a pet. Viltrumite DNA is so pure and complete that you are nearly full-blooded. I could mate with nearly any alien being of comparable evolutionary development and produce a similar offspring. This means you will eventually become as strong as me. You could potentially be stronger... and you will live for thousands of years. Do you understand what this means? Everything you know and love will be gone before you look thirty years old. You do not belong here. Do you really want to watch your world die around you? | „ |
~ Omni-Man to Invincible. |
“ | They're not coming because they're no one to send. I am confident in this because I know how far away the Viltrumites are. My execution was postponed because they are called away—it was only recently that they were able to send back the two agents required by law for an execution. They had no else to spare. The reason is simple…there are less than fifty pure-blooded Viltrumites left alive in the whole universe. That's the secret...that's the thing they don't want anyone to know...that's why we can beat them. | „ |
~ Omni-Man to Allen the Alien. |

“ | You should've stayed dead. | „ |
~ Omni-Man to a revived Immortal. |
“ | It's me, Mark. It's just me. This isn't how I wanted to do this, but I don't have a choice. It's time for you to know where I really come from: I am from Viltrum, but it's not the planet I've told you about: We have created a perfect civilization, but it took all of our strength, determination, and courage to get there. In order for our people to reach their full potential, we had to remove the weak from our society. It was a long and difficult process. When it was over, our population was cut in half but what emerged from the ashes was unstoppable. By the time I was born, Viltrum was already the greatest empire in our galaxy. We decided to make it the only empire in our galaxy. Once I was old enough, I joined the war effort. It was hard, but I believe in our cause. Some species resisted, of course, but no one could withstand us for long. Soon, our empire encompassed thousands of planets, but as territory grew, our forces were stretched thin, and our expansion stopped. We needed a better, more efficient way to conquer worlds. Our most trusted officers were each given a planet to weaken by themselves. I was one of those lucky few. I couldn't tell your mother why I was here. But that time's come to an end, and now, we need to get Earth ready to join the Viltrum Empire. | „ |
~ Nolan to Mark, revealing the truth about Viltrum and his purpose on Earth. |
“ | Omni-Man: Mark, this is good news. We can finally do what we were meant to do, be who we were meant to be. Invincible: You lied to me... Omni-Man: You couldn't know the truth. Not until you had your powers not until I was sure. Invincible: Sure of what? Omni-Man: Sure you were a Viltrumite. Invincible: So if I wasn't, I'd just be one more human to conquer? No! Th-This doesn't make any sense! You love me! You love Mom! I know you do! |
„ |
~ Nolan to Mark, trying to reason with him that they can do what ever they want. |
“ | Omni-Man: Do you have any idea how long we live? The older we get, the slower we age. Viltrumite DNA is so pure you're nearly full-blooded. You'll live for thousands of years. Do you understand what that means? Everyone you know and love will be gone before you even look 30. It's not something I want for you. This isn't your world. It's theirs. But we can help them. We can stop wars. Eliminate hunger. Give them medical technology centuries ahead of what they have now. We've already been doing it. If it wasn't for you and me, this planet would be in flames. All we have to do is welcome Earth into our empire. I do love your mother. But she's more like a... a pet to me. Invincible: A pet? Omni-Man: This is the only way, Mark... |
„ |
~ Nolan to Mark, revealing their Viltrumite origins, and how he feels about Debbie. |
“ | Invincible: Don't touch me... Omni-Man: Calm down. Invincible: I will NOT calm down! This is insane! What do you think is gonna happen? That I'm gonna go enslave my friends for a bunch of aliens I've never met? This is my life! These are my people! Omni-Man: We have a responsibility to Viltrum. Invincible: I don't give a sh*t about Viltrum! And I don't care if I live a f*cking million years! This is my home, and I won't let you destroy it! Omni-Man: You don't know what you're saying. And I can't let you interfere. Invincible: I know exactly what I'm saying. Omni-Man: So be it... Do you really think you can stop me? |
„ |
~ Invincible refuses to accept Omni-Man's word. |
“ | Look what they need to mimic a fraction of our power! It's right to pity them, Mark. Wrong to value them over your own kind. | „ |
~ Nolan to Mark when Cecil calls in an airstrike. |
“ | Invincible: You've almost killed him! Omni-Man: Instead, you saved him. So much effort... for what? Invincible: No! Omni-Man: Where was that other one? |
„ |
~ Nolan to Mark upon killing the pilot. |
“ | Invincible: You've killed him! Omni-Man: Now, or in 50 years when he's old, what difference does it make? Invincible: What difference?! He'd have a life! Omni-Man: Did seeing that man lose his life disturb you? Did it hurt? Well, let's see how you handle this! |
„ |
~ Nolan to Mark. |
“ | Invincible: How could you do this? Omni-Man: That was your fault. Your stubbornness against the inevitable killed those people. How many more need to die, Mark? It's up to you. And what were they doing with those fragile little lives anyway? Listen to what I'm saying. You know in your heart I'm right. Invincible: Right? About how pathetic and pointless humanity is? Is Mom's life worthless? Omni-Man: In the grand scheme of things... Yes. Debbie: (sobs) Cecil: Debbie... Invincible: How can you say those things? How can you say that about Mom? LIAR! Omni-Man: For the first time in your life, I'm telling you the truth! |
„ |
~ Nolan answering Mark's question about his wife's life being worthless, his most infamous quote. |
“ | Invincible: L-Let me... I need to save them...! Omni-Man: No. Maybe this time you'll learn. |
„ |
~ Nolan to Mark. |
“ | Omni-Man: These people are meaningless. They're cavemen without us. Invincible: You're wrong. I've seen you save people. I've seen you almost die to protect them. Maybe you were a Viltrumite when you've came to Earth, but you've changed! You were happy here! Omni-Man: Sure. I was happy. For a time. But I'm loyal to Viltrum, not this pathetic excuse for a civilization. |
„ |
~ Nolan to Mark. |
“ | You aren't listening, Mark. My time here has been a speck in the span of my life, you don't know me. I will burn this planet down before I spend another minute living among these animals! | „ |
~ Nolan to Mark. |
“ | I was wrong to raise you as a human. I should have prepared you better. Taught you more. Your life has been soft and painless. You're a Viltrumite in blood only. Well, your true education begins now. | „ |
~ Nolan to Mark. |
“ | Omni-Man: Had enough yet? Invincible: I'll... I'll stop you... Omni-Man: I'm ready when you are. |
„ |
~ Nolan just before he punches Mark. |
“ | Omni-Man: You're doing this for nothing. Being part of the empire will make Earth better than it was. Invincible: And what if they resist? Omni-Man: That's why we're here. To keep them from resisting. To show them how wrong they are, how pointless it is, that they can be part of something bigger. Or die. Invincible: I won't let you… Omni-Man: You want to die for this planet? Fine! What's 17 more years? I can always start again! Make another kid. |
„ |
~ Nolan before beating Mark to near death. |
Season 2[]
“ | Robot: Someday, you too will die. Omni-Man: Sure... But you should have died at birth. |
„ |
~ Omni-Man while killing Robot. |
“ | Omni-Man: Why? Why do I care about them? They were weak, short-lived, barely a species. They shouldn't matter to me. Invincible: That doesn’t mean they should die. Omni-Man: You don’t understand! I'M NOT SUPPOSED TO FEEL THIS WAY! HOW IS THIS BETTER?! Invincible: This is how you should have felt on Earth. |
„ |
~ Omni-Man's emotional breakdown to Invincible after the Viltrumites slaughtered the Thraxans. |
“ | Lucan was weak. Now, he's dead. | „ |
~ Nolan about Lucan's fate. |
“ | I'll kill you for what you did to these people. | „ |
~ Nolan to Vidor before attacking him. |
Mortal Kombat 1[]
“ | Desperate to avoid defeat, Titan Shang Tsung had stolen me from my timeline to set me against Liu Kang. He assumed a Viltrumite would shift kombat in his favor. Shang Tsung was right, of course. But he was blinded by ambition and failed to consider that my only true loyalty is to the Viltrum Empire. In my home timeline, my mission to pacify Earth for Viltrum had been left... incomplete. I thought I could redeem myself by delivering this new timeline. New realms, new species, all ours for the taking. For a few years, annexing realms satisfied the Empire's hunger for conquest. But my people have excellent memory... I knew sooner or later we would return to our own timeline. To Earth. To finish my original mission. I only hope my son has had time enough to prepare. | „ |
~ Omni-Man's ending in Mortal Kombat 1. |
Trivia[]
- Omni-Man's design, role to the Earth, initial personality and partial backstory are evidently influenced by Superman, though clear differences begin with Omni-Man's true original motive and much of his backstory.
- Omni-Man was originally going to be named "Supra Man", but Image Comics made the writers changed the name due to it being too close to Superman.
- Omni-Man bears a striking resemblance to J. Jonah Jameson from the Spider-Man comics. Interestingly, J.K. Simmons, who plays Omni-Man, played Jameson in Sam Raimi's Spider-Man trilogy and in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
