Onaya is the main antagonist of the Star Trek: Deep Space Nine episode "The Muse".
She was portrayed by Meg Foster, who also played Evil-Lyn in the Masters of the Universe movie, Margaret Morgan in The Lords of Salem and the physical form of Hera in Hercules and Xena.
Biography[]
Onaya was an alien of unknown origin, who fed off the creative energies of artists. Her link with them inspired their creativity but also shortened their lives, with all her subjects dying at a young age. Those she fed off included Catullus, Tarbolde, Keats, Revalus and the Cardassian architect Tavor Kell. Arriving on Deep Space 9, she was immediately drawn to Jake Sisko, recognising him as a writer. Approaching him later, she told him some of her history and suggested that artists wanted to be remembered, inviting him to her quarters.
Jake told her of a vague idea he had for an autobiographical novel that seemed too big to write. Onaya insisted he write with a pen and paper, saying it was an artist's canvas, and encouraged him to write whatever came into his mind. She massaged his head as he did so, stimulating his mind and feeding off his energy. She encouraged him to keep going even as he began to weaken and suffered a nosebleed. Eventually, however, knocking his father Captain Ben Sisko was due to return to the station soon, she convinced him to go back to his quarters to rest.
However, Jake had been so badly drained by the experience that he ended up in the station's infirmary after collapsing. Onaya headed there and knocked out the nurse with a burst of energy, taking Jake to a corridor shielded from the transporters, where she re-established her link with him as he continued writing. Ben arrived and held Onaya at phaser point, ordering her to step away from Jake. Onaya told him that Jake had been the youngest she ever found, ready to release everything in one burst. In an attempt to stop her leaving, Sisko fired his phaser at her but she transformed into energy and departed.
