Onodera is the secondary antagonist of the 1966 film Gamera vs. Barugon.
He was portrayed by Kôji Fujiyama.
Biography[]
The film is about an opal that Ichiro Hirata found and hid in a cave in New Guinea during World War II. Because he had since gone handicapped from the war, his younger brother Keisuke goes in his place alongside the hired recruits Onodera and Kawajiri. Where Kawajiri wants the reward money to help his family and retire early, Onodera has his past classified, much to Keisuke's suspicion. When the three arrive at New Guinea, they are warned by Matsushita, the doctor of a village, not to go into the Valley of Rainbows where the opal is stored, but they chose to ignore him. Along the way, Onodera falls into quicksand but is saved by the others. In the cave, they find the opal in a dilapidated bag. While celebrating, Kawajiri is stung by a venomous scorpion and dies. As Keisuke mourns his friend, Onodera suddenly snatches the opal and blows up the cave with dynamite, leaving Keisuke trapped. Fortunately, he is rescued by the villagers and nursed back to health by Karen and Matsushita.
On the ship back to Japan, the opal is exposed to the infrared rays of a lamp that Onodera used to treat his athlete's foot. The opal, really the egg of Barugon, hatches and allows the monster to escape and sink the ship. After swimming back to Japan's shore, Onodera is met by Ichiro in Kope, where he makes up the excuse that Keisuke and Kawajiri both fell off a cliff to their deaths and the opal was lost when the ship sank. Just then, Barugon attacks the city, sending Onodera and Ichiro to Osaka.
At Ichiro's house, while trying to convince Ichiro and his wife to hire divers to find the opal, Onodera accidentally reveals that he killed Kawajiri by keeping quiet of the scorpion when it climbed his leg and trapping Keisuke in the cave. Enraged, Ichiro attacks Onodera only for him and his wife to be beaten by the greedy Onodera. He steals their wallet and sets the house on fire. Meanwhile, Barugon freezes Gamera and all of Kobe.
Once returning to Japan with the help of Karen and Matsushita, Keisuke learns of his brother and sister-in-law's deaths and learns from a witness that Onodera was last seen exiting the house before the fire started. Keisuke and Karen confront Onodera and bash him for his actions of killing his brother and tells him that the opal was Barugon's egg, but he refuses to believe them. A brawl ensues and Onodera gets the advantage in nearly killing them with a knife until Karen knocks him out with a glass bottle to the head. They tie him to a pole before running out to help the Japanese military find a way to defeat the approaching Barugon.
Later, during a protocol where Karen would use a giant diamond from her village in an attempt to draw Barugon into water in an attempt to drown him, they manage to manipulate the giant lizard by weakening him with artificial rain and lures him to Lake Biwa. Just as they were about to draw him in, Onodera shows up with a gun, wanting the diamond for himself and threatens to shoot anyone that attempts to stop him. Once he obtains the diamond, Onodera attempts to make his getaway on a small boat. However, Barugon was still interested in the diamond and grabs Onodera and the diamond with his tongue before swallowing him whole.
