Onyx: Give me my wallet.

Gumball: Uh, sure, where is it?
Onyx: In your pocket!

~ Onyx robbing Gumball for seven dollars.
Yes... I only pretended to attack your beautiful fiancée to get to your most important weapon... Your optimistic heart! Without it's light, my shadow can take over the world, and there is nothing you can do without your superpower!
~ Onyx to LaserHeart in the comic.

Onyx is the main antagonist of the The Amazing World of Gumball episode "The Comic."

He is a shadowy thief who steals Gumball Watterson's wallet in the middle of the night, which ruins Gumball's passion and optimism for being his superheroic alter-ego LaserHeart. Later, to restore Gumball's positivity, Sarah G. Lato writes a LaserHeart comic portraying Onyx as the main supervillain, who revels in pessimism and darkness, where he is defeated after failing to destroy LaserHeart's optimistic heart.

Appearance[]

In reality, Onyx is a tall, shadowy, ghostly humanoid with luminescent, star-shaped eyes and and a glowing mouth. His body is dark and composed of a smoky and wispy substance. He has long, drooping limbs with large hands and feet, along with a hunched posture.

In the comic, Onyx is a gigantic, muscular, imposing humanoid with dark skin. His face consists of glowing red eyes and a jagged, sharp-toothed, glowing yellow mouth. His hair is lavender-colored, long and wispy.

Personality[]

In reality, Onyx appears to be a manipulative and shady character in Elmore. He is seen mugging Gumball for his wallet after intimidating him with feigned paranoia and later attempting to dismantle the Wattersons' car. However, he is not particularly threatening, as Nicole Watterson easily and karmically punches him in the face at the end of the episode. Even Gumball comments on the futility and embarrassment of calling the police, lamenting the idea of explaining that they were "dressed up as Eastern European pop stars and got mugged for $7 by a shadow."

In the comic, however, Onyx is portrayed as a malevolent, powerful, and hegemonic supervillain entirely focused on destroying LaserHeart's optimism so that his shadow, darkness, and nihilism can take over the world. He is uncompromising in his goal, refusing LaserHeart's offer to "see the light," even after being saved by him. Onyx is athletic, strong, and highly capable of fighting LaserHeart, but his arrogance and overconfidence lead to his downfall. After LaserHeart’s heart is destroyed, The Smooch (the comic book alter-ego of Darwin Watterson) revives him, and he then destroys a baffled Onyx, who had believed that LaserHeart’s optimism was gone for good.
