The Onyx City Council are minor antagonist in the Sonic Universe comic book series, appearing as secondary antagonists of the comic's Silver Age arc. They are the four (formerly five) leaders of the City, who pursue scientific discovery through unorthodox means.
History[]
At some point, the Council came into power in the Onyx City. They regulated the citizens' daily lives, and punished anyone who strayed away from their orders. Few, such as Silver the Hedgehog, were bold enough to oppose them, and even then they did it covertly. Back when the council consisted of only four people, they found Gold the Tenrec, a refugee from a dimension ravaged by the Second Devourer. They took her in and made her one of their own, intending to use her psychic powers for their own benefit.
One day, the council monitor the Genesis Portal that Professor Von Schlemmer and Silver fell into, which the latter then closed. They dismissed Gold's concerns about its nature. Later, when Schlemmer came to them to tell the story of his encounter with the portal, they pretended to be uninterested and sent him away. Gold, however, sent Silver a telepathic message, asking to meet her in the Science Center at night. During their meeting, the rest of the Council captured Gold, Silver and Schlemmer. They forced Gold to open a Genesis Portal, and shoved Silver and the professor inside as part of an experiment. Though their victims broke free and escaped, so did the Second Devourer. It petrified the Council before proceeding to do the same to the Onyx City until it was defeated by Silver. What happened to the Council next is unknown, although Gold's words indicate they would come back to life soon after the Devourer's defeat.
Overview[]
The Onyx City Council is an Orwellian political body, controlling every aspect of their subject's lives. Any dissent is punishable with the use of force or imprisonment. The councilpeople have little to no moral restraint, readily experimenting on sentient beings, including one of their own. They appear to follow their leader's directions without question.
The councilman uniform consists of a grey-and-white cloak with gold undertones, and a golden mask with a certain number of dots on it, presumably signifying the order of the councilpeople having joined the organization.
Trivia[]
- Gold the Tenrec is the only member of the Council to be unmasked. As such, the identites, genders, ages and species of the rest of the councilpeople remain unknown.
