Orion is a major antagonist in The Blood of Olympus, the final book in the Heroes of Olympus series. He is based off the character of the same name from Greek mythology.
Biography[]
First Life[]
Orion was the son of Gaea and Tartarus. He was born specifically to defeat Artemis and Apollo during the first Gigantomachy. However, he refused to fight and decided to make his own destiny. He travelled to the kingdom of Chios, where he tried to court princess, Merope. It is implied that he may have tried to rape her. The king had him blinded and exiled.
While exiled, he stumbled upon Hephaestus who took pity on him and made him mechanical eyes. Afterwards, Orion found the island of Delos, where he met Artemis. Artemis was so impressed with his hunting skills that she let him be the first male member of her Hunters. He fell in love with her, however, she refused him. Artemis' twin brother, Apollo cursed Orion to fall into a rage and kill every animal he saw. In order to stop him, his mother Gaea sent a giant scorpion to kill him. After his death he was turned into a constellation, likely by Artemis herself.
Second Life[]
After Orion died he went to Tartarus. Gaea brought him back and convinced him to fight for her and help her destroy both Olympus and the world. When he was alive, Orion had a deep hatred for Artemis and wanted revenge for her rejecting him. He was unable to kill her, so instead, he decided to kill all strong women who reminded him of Artemis. He killed many members of The Hunters of Artemis. He also killed the Amazons, as he didn't distinguish between them and the hunters. Zoe Nightshade, the lieutenant of Artemis, spent Millenia hunting Orion, but was never able to kill him.
The Blood of Olympus[]
In order to help Gaea destroy the world, he needed to prevent the Greek and Romans from reconciling. To do this, he hunted Reyna and Nico who were trying to transport the Athena Parthenos to the Greeks. He sent an army of werewolves, led by Lycaon, in order to kill Nico and Reyna, but they escaped.
The Hunters and Amazons, along with Reyna, attempted to set a trap for him. However he anticipated the trap. He managed to kill dozens of Hunters and Amazons, along with two of their Leaders, Kinzie and Phoebe. He tried to kill Reyna and her sister Hylla as well, but the surviving Hunters and Amazons managed to surround him, allowing Reyna to escape.
Orion caught up with Reyna just before she was about to reach the Greeks with the Athena Parthenos. He launched a bomb at her, while she was on a cruise ship with dozens of civilians. Reyna fell on the bomb to contain the blast. Realizing Athena blessed her with a magic cloak, Reyna uses the cloak to strangle the giant.
