The Orion Syndicate are minor antagonists in the Star Trek franchise. They have made a number of appearances in Star Trek: Deep Space Nine and Star Trek: Enterprise.
History[]
The Orion Syndicate were first mentioned in the Star Trek: Deep Space Nine episode "The Ascent". Quark was called to give evidence before a Federation hearing as a witness against the Orion Syndicate. Odo was escorting him by runabout when they discovered the Orion Syndicate had planted a bomb on board the ship. They managed to beam to a nearby planet before the bomb went off and were later rescued.
Odo would later encounter Arissa, a young woman on the run from the Orion Syndicate. Neither of them were initially aware that she was an agent of Idanian security with an implanted personality. She had infiltrated the organisation of an Orion Syndicate member known as Draim and been compelled to return to the Idanians with the information she had gathered. Draim sent two assassins, Traidy and Sorm, after her but they were defeated by Odo and the Idanians.
Chief O'Brien was later sent to infiltrate the Orion Syndicate to discover a leak in Starfleet Intelligence. In the process, he discovered that the Orion Syndicate were being hired by the Dominion to assassinate a Klingon ambassador and frame the Federation. O'Brien's superiors warned the Klingons they were coming. O'Brien tried to warn his friend Liam Bilby that the Klingons knew they were coming but Bilby elected to walk into the trap so the Orion Syndicate would think he had remained loyal. O'Brien kept an eye on Bilby's widow Morica and later learned she had been employed by Ezri Dax's family as a ruse to provide her with a salary, their part of a bargain with the Orion Syndicate for helping them through a financial difficulty.
The fourth season of Star Trek: Enterprise saw the crew of the Enterprise NX-01 encountering the Orion Syndicate two centuries earlier. While travelling the Borderland between Earth and Klingon space, Enterprise was attacked by the Orion Syndicate, who abducted a number of crews planning to sell them as slaves. Captain Archer organised a slave breakout in order to retrieve his crewmembers. He was later contacted by an Orion Syndicate member, Harrad-Sar, who offered him three Orion slave girls, Navaar, D'Nesh and Maras, as a gift. It eventually transpired the trio were senior members of the Orion Syndicate who attempted to use their pheromones to take control of Enterprise. They were stopped by Commander T'Pol and Commander Tucker.
Trivia[]
A number of sources claim the Orions seen in the original series and the animated series were also members of the Orion Syndicate. The organisation had not been introduced when those episodes were made, although Enterprise would later indicate they already existed at that point.
