“ | Percy: Wait, no! What are you doing to me? Orthax: (laughs evilly) Giving you what you wanted, Percival. Percy: Who are you!? Orthax: You know exactly who I am. You summoned me. Your torment and thirst for revenge called me to your side. An unspoken partnership. Deep down, you remembered, welcoming my help. Welcoming the rage that fueled you to create it. The weapon. Percy: What are you talking about? Orthax: Forged in iron and smoke. We struck a bargain. I gave you the means for revenge, and you gave me souls to feast upon. |

~ Orthax revealing himself to Percy |
Orthax is a major antagonist in the first campaign of the Dungeons & Dragons web series Critical Role and its animated adaptation The Legend of Vox Machina.
It is a shadow demon who made pacts with Percival de Rolo and Dr. Anna Ripley in order to gain souls to devour.
It was voiced by Matthew Mercer, who also voiced Lord Sylas Briarwood, Umbrasyl, and Craven Edge in the same series.
Biography[]
Background[]
Orthax first made its pact with Percy through what Percy believed was just a dream, subtly offering him vengeance against the Briarwoods for the death of his family. This led to Percy creating his first pepperbox.
Whispers[]
While Orthax did not make a coherent appearance in this chapter, it did cause Percy to become more erratic and violent, and cause smoke to emerge from his body, which his friends were able to pick up on.
Denouement[]
When Percy realized how far gone he had become with his lust for revenge, he tried to break his connection with Orthax, only to be brought with violent resistance from the demon. However, the rest of Percy's friends came to his aid and subdued the demon in a fight. When the battle was over, Scanlan took Percy's pepperbox and flung it into a body of acid, seemingly killing Orthax.
Cloak & Dagger[]
It was revealed here however, Orthax was still alive and had now form a pact with Dr. Anna Ripley. The two teamed up to fight Vox Machina. Ripley killed Percy in battle, but Vox Machina managed to defeat the demon yet again.
Passed Through Fire[]
Despite being defeated a second time, Orthax still existed on the Material Plane due to its connection with Percy's pepperbox. It mnaged to grab ahold of Percy's soul, which prevented him from being resurrected until Keyeth used a greater restoration spell to sever Orthax's connection to the weapon, which also allowed Percy to be resurrected.
The Legend of Vox Machina[]
TBA.
Trivia[]
- When Percival's player, Taliesin put together Percy's backstory, Matthew Mercer then determined whether Percy's dream was just a dream or something else. Therefore, when Orthax was revealed, Taliesin was just as surprised as the other players.
