Percy: Wait, no! What are you doing to me?
Orthax: (laughs evilly) Giving you what you wanted, Percival.
Percy: Who are you!?
Orthax: You know exactly who I am. You summoned me. Your torment and thirst for revenge called me to your side. An unspoken partnership. Deep down, you remembered, welcoming my help. Welcoming the rage that fueled you to create it. The weapon.
Percy: What are you talking about?
Orthax: Forged in iron and smoke. We struck a bargain. I gave you the means for revenge, and you gave me souls to feast upon.
~ Orthax revealing himself to Percy
We had a bargain, Percy. And I will happily collect.
~ Orthax revealing himself to be Ripley's partner to Percy.

Orthax is a major antagonist in the first campaign of the Dungeons & Dragons web series Critical Role and its animated adaptation The Legend of Vox Machina.

It is a shadow demon who made pacts with Percival de Rolo and Dr. Anna Ripley in order to gain souls to devour.

It was voiced by Matthew Mercer, who also voiced Lord Sylas Briarwood, Umbrasyl, and Craven Edge in the same series.

Biography[]

Background[]

Orthax first made its pact with Percy through what Percy believed was just a dream, subtly offering him vengeance against the Briarwoods for the death of his family. This led to Percy creating his first pepperbox.

Whispers[]

While Orthax did not make a coherent appearance in this chapter, it did cause Percy to become more erratic and violent, and cause smoke to emerge from his body, which his friends were able to pick up on.

Denouement[]

When Percy realized how far gone he had become with his lust for revenge, he tried to break his connection with Orthax, only to be brought with violent resistance from the demon. However, the rest of Percy's friends came to his aid and subdued the demon in a fight. When the battle was over, Scanlan took Percy's pepperbox and flung it into a body of acid, seemingly killing Orthax.

Cloak & Dagger[]

It was revealed here however, Orthax was still alive and had now form a pact with Dr. Anna Ripley. The two teamed up to fight Vox Machina. Ripley killed Percy in battle, but Vox Machina managed to defeat the demon yet again.

Passed Through Fire[]

Despite being defeated a second time, Orthax still existed on the Material Plane due to its connection with Percy's pepperbox. It managed to grab ahold of Percy's soul, which prevented him from being resurrected until Keyeth used a greater restoration spell to sever Orthax's connection to the weapon, which also allowed Percy to be resurrected.

The Legend of Vox Machina[]

Tv Show Adaption of Orthax is similar to Critical Role, like in Critical Role, Percy who escaped his near death by the hands of the Briarwoods, and later became homeless in a new town, where he then dreamed of revenge, drawing a sketch of his new weapon in the form of a revolver, called the Pepperbox, he would create the weapon forged in smoke and steel, but wasn't aware truly that the smoke was sentinent and full of desire for pain.

Orthax would a slight cameo in "The Feast of Realms", on the night of a banquet held by Sovereign Uriel, the Briarwoods were invited to the castle, this would upset Percy and caused Vox Machina to depart from the dinner table. This resulted in Vox Machina attempting to discover their plans, one of them were hurt by the Briarwoods, during the fight, the Briarwoods's driver was left behind, where Percy with a mask, threatened the driver for answers. A large mist consumed Percy with chaos, as he shot the man's fingers off.

The mist would return again when Percy killed several more allies of the Briarwoods, becoming more of a concern to the Vox Machina, where Pike tried to discover the mist, believing it to be some kind of mystic figure within Percy that isn't letting Pike heal him.

The mist would grow into more of a personality within Percy, as he discovered Cassandra (a survivor of the De Rolo family massacre) betray him and the Vox, as it turns out she was under the Briarwoods control. But this would lead to the mist taking over more of Percy's mind in a final confrontation with the Briarwoods in a underground ravine like castle, as he fought Sylas and Cassandra but Sylas was killed by Keylith, and then Deliah tried to escape. Percy shot her a few times when she was distracted. Quickly Vox Machina, and Cassandra left the underground castle, and tried to interograte Deliah who said nothing, resulting Percy wanting to kill her, even the latter request this offer, but merely take apart her body as each of limbs symbolize every former family member of the De Rolos that were killed by the Briarwoods.

The Vox Machina begin to try and reason with Percy, who was under an unstable sway by the mist calling himself "Orthax", and manipulating Percy to killing Vox Machina. it was only by Vex and Cassandra that they manage to free him, by finding himself. Percy shoots his hand, breaking the connection that Orthax had on Percy.

While Cassandra kills Deliah, Scalan throws Orthax's vessel that contained which is Percy's pepperbox, the creature makes at one last attempt at cursing at the Vox Machina before dying.

However this was not so, as Orthax discovered another broken soul in Anna Ripley, and like Percy made a deal and gave her an idea of pepperboxes being the source for her work and even giving her a new arm. The two would often work amongst the shadows, in season 2 they would work with Dragons and Grog's family, to fund her work, but Vox Machina managed to defeat them all.

Eventually Anna would draw out Percy and attempt to sway him on her side, all attempts failed, however Percy realizing Orthax merely fed on her lust for vegeance and destruction like he to Percy, wanting to still help her, but was fatally struck by Anna.

However Anna, would finally meet her end by Vex, Percy's lover.

Vax would discover, Orthax would keep Percy's soul within one of Anna's pepperboxes and torment him, but thanks to Vex and Vax they manage to free Percy from his clutches and destroy Orthax once and for all, finally ending his ongoing torment to Percy and Vox Machina as a whole.

Trivia[]

  • When Percival's player, Taliesin put together Percy's backstory, Matthew Mercer then determined whether Percy's dream was just a dream or something else. Therefore, when Orthax was revealed, Taliesin was just as surprised as the other players.
  • Orthax was foreshadowed numerous times in Season 1, whenever Percy put on the mask, but his physical appearance was seen in a bloody silhouette in a silver tongue, and in the penultimate episodes of season 1 is shown to be part of a voice filter when Percy speaks.
