Oscar Cordero is one of the major antagonists in The Mentalist TV-show. He is Gale Bertram's bodyguard, whose secret mission was to kill him under Red John's orders. He was played by Joe Nieves.
Biography[]
We first see Oscar after the death of Robert Kirkland, one of the suspects for the role of Red John. Although Robert was killed by Reede Smith (another suspect for the role of Red John), Oscar claims that the driver of the paddy wagon did it in order to stop the escaped criminal. This calls into question Oscar's honesty and hints at some secret mission that the audience and other characters are not yet aware of. It soon turns out that he himself (like Reed and the paddy wagon driver) is a member of the Blake Association, a gang of dirty cops who cover for each other and kill each other's enemies. On orders from this gang, he is pursuing Reede Smith himself in order to kill him. But Reede voluntarily surrenders to the police and sincerely confesses to his crimes, thereby making a deal with the investigation. Oscar, meanwhile, twice saves Bertram when he kills the bartender who identified him and when he is identified by a police officer. It is not Bertram who kills this policeman, but Oscar. Later, Oscar and Bertram, on orders from Red John, lure Patrick into a trap. On orders from Red John, Oscar kills Bertram. Red John (who turns out to be Sheriff Thomas McAllister) asks Oscar to wait outside so he can discuss the remaining issues with Patrick. During the negotiations, Patrick wounds Red John. Oscar, hearing the gunshots, runs back in. He runs at Patrick with the clear intent to kill him. Patrick has no choice but to shoot Oscar twice. It is not directly stated what happens to Oscar after that. It is assumed that Patrick killed him with those two shots.
Personality[]
From the moment Oscar appears, it is clear that something is wrong with him. Although it is obvious (at least to the viewer) that Robert Kirkland was killed by Reed Smith, Oscar claims that it was the driver of a paddy wagon who saw Robert escape. It soon becomes clear that he is working with the Blake Association. He takes orders from Bertram and is (from a certain point of view) his bodyguard on Association business. However, it soon becomes clear that Oscar's loyalty is to Red John and no one else.
Trivia[]
- In the "Red John" episode, it is implied that he is Red John's main enforcer and possibly second-in-command in the Blake Association. Had it been confirmed, it would have made Oscar the secondary antagonist of the TV-show.
