Oswald Mosley is one of the two main antagonists (alongside Chief Inspector Campbell) of the BBC Crime series Peaky Blinders.
Based on the real-life politician of the same name, Mosley is a fascist and political schemer who sees Thomas Shelby as a potential ally and advantage to his ambition.
He was portrayed by Sam Claflin, who also played Alexander Brock in Charlie's Angels, Lieutenant Hawkins in The Nightingale and Alistair Ryle in The Riot Club.
Biography[]
Mosley first introduces himself to Tommy after he gives a speech in parliament, citing that he has done research on Tommy and is surprised to see someone with his history in a position of political power.
In a meeting with Ada and Tommy, Mosley admits that the reason for his approaching Tommy is that he needs help with business in London, however Tommy declines, remarking that Birmingham is his constituency.
He reveals to Tommy at another meeting that he has spies doing research on the Shelby members, such as that Michael's sloppy handling of the stocks in America causing great loss of money for the Shelbys and that Arthur's wife, Linda intends to leave him and has been seen with another man. He also tells Tommy that he also needs him, due to his vast powers both politically and criminally, as a part of his strategy.
At the party Tommy holds at his house for Lizzie, Mosley admits that he once knew Lizzie back in their youth when she was a prostitute, and that he rented her once. Tommy makes it clear that if Mosley touches Lizzie again, he is fair game for Johnny Dogs. Mosley takes the party as an opportunity to rally support for his new political party: the British Union of Fascists.
Mosley's actions soon become known to Winston Churchill, and unknown to Mosley, Churchill approves Tommy's assassination plot on Mosley. Tommy recruits his former friend Barney to do the killing, which is planned to happen on a night when Mosley is holding a speech, when Tommy is also on the stage, to keep the suspicion that the Peaky Blinders are involved at bay. Unfortunately, the assassination does not go as planned, with someone killing Barney before he can shoot Mosley, and Mosley is able to escape alive.
