Otis is the main antagonist of the 1986 psychological horror film Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer. He is loosely based on real-life serial killer Otis Toole.
He is Henry's former cellmate, who invites him to stay at his apartment with his sister, Becky. Upon finding out Henry's true nature as a serial killer, Otis joins him in committing murders to vent his sexual frustrations and pent-up sadism.
He was portrayed by the late Tom Towles, who also played Cooper in the 1990 remake of Night of the Living Dead and Grillo in Warriors of Virtue.
Biography[]
After being released from jail, Otis picks up his sister Becky and takes her back to the apartment that he shares with Henry. Later, when Otis makes an incestuous pass at Becky, Henry violently threatens Otis, who promises not to do it again.
The next day, Henry and Otis pick up a pair of prostitutes whom Henry kills both via breaking their neck. Otis is terrified and disgusted, and confronts Henry about his murderous lifestyle, attempting to convince him of a relativistic nature of murder. Otis panics that the police may catch them, but Henry assumes him that everything shall work out. Back at their apartment, Henry explains his code: The word is "them or us." Otis seemingly agrees and drops the argument.
After Otis destroys his old TV out of annoyance, Henry takes him to a fence to buy a new one. The foul-mouthed man ironically taunts them for having little money, and berates them for denying to buy his black-market goods. Having found an apology to indulge his murderous impulses, Henry stabs the fence repeatedly with a soldering iron nearby. When the man fights back, Otis grabs a rope and strangles him. Henry then smashes a TV onto his head. At Henry's urging, Otis plugs in the damaged TV, electrocuting the man. They then steal a high-end TV as well as a camcorder and goes back home unnoticed.
When Otis is punched by a teenage boy whom he had tried to sexually assault while selling him marijuana, he complains to Henry that he wish to murder the boy. Henry convinces Otis to let the resentment for fear of being caught if they were to harm the boy. Bolstered by the thrill of their previous homicide, the pair embark on a killing spree. They set a trap for drivers on Lower Wacker Drive, faking a broken-down car then fatally shooting a man who pulls over to help. Henry advises Otis to employ a different modus operandi for each murder so that the police will not connect them to one perpetrator. He also explains the importance of being on the move; by the time that police are aware of searching a serial killer, he can be long gone. Henry says that he will have to quit Chicago soon. Later on, both watch a recording of a home invasion in which they had murdered a family of three. Otis starts to rape the mother's corpse before Henry objects.
Becky leaves her job to go back home to her daughter. Otis and Henry argue after their camera gets destroyed while Otis is filming female pedestrians from the window of Henry's car. Otis goes for a drink while Henry returns to the apartment. Becky tells Henry her plans, and they decide to go out for a steak dinner. Afterward, she tries to seduce him, only to be interrupted by Otis. When Henry returns to the apartment, he finds Otis raping and choking Becky. Henry fights Otis. However, Otis gets the upper hand. As Otis is about to kill Henry, Becky stabs him in the eye with her comb. While Becky is in shock, Henry grabs the comb and brutally takes the life of Otis, then dismembers the body in the bathtub. Henry and Becky dump Otis' body parts in a river and head back to the hotel.
