When the gateway opens wide, deados will take over. And I'm gonna rule over them all as I turn Earth into the tenth circle of Hell.
~ Astaroth explaining his plans to take over the world.

Astaroth, better known as Otis Clairborne, is the main antagonist of the 2022 sci-fi action-comedy film R.I.P.D. 2: Rise of the Damned.

He is the sinister and sadistic leader of a gang of Deados who roam around as outlaws in the Old West. It is later revealed that Otis is actually possessed by Astaroth, an all-powerful demon and right-hand man of the Devil himself. Astaroth plans to exert control over the human population of Red Creek, holding them hostage to excavate and open a rift underneath the town that connects Earth and Hell. By doing so, he aims to transform Earth into his own Hell by unleashing all the damned souls from the Underworld.

He was portrayed by Richard Brake, who also played Joe Chill in Batman Begins, Enrikas Dortlich in Hannibal Rising, the Night King in Game of Thrones, Valin Hess in The Mandalorian and Frank in Barbarian.

Biography[]

Otis Clairborne is the leader of a gang of outlaws who attempted to extract gold from a mine in Red Creek, Utah, but unwittingly came across a concealed barrier connecting Earth and Hell. The demon Astaroth escaped and possessed Clairborne. Later, Clairborne and his gang subjugate the town of Red Creek and force the population of humans to work by mining to open the rift of the gateway to Hell. Otis falls into the possession of an R.I.P.D. soulkiller weapon, attracting the attention of R.I.P.D. officers Roy Pulsipher - the deceased Sheriff of Red Creek - and Jeanne. His plans are thwarted by the officers, and it is revealed that Jeanne is actually the Joan of Arc, who possesses all-knowing Biblical knowledge. Clairborne, who is impervious to standard R.I.P.D.-issued soul-killing weapons due to his ability to possess hundreds of damned souls to take the damage for him, is finally killed when Pulsipher loads his gun with his mortal weakness, the Tears of Christ.
