Otto, also known by his title The Counsellor, is the main antagonist of the audio drama The Sounds of Nightmares, a spinoff of the Little Nightmares series.
Initially appearing as Noone's seemingly benevolent psychiatrist, he gradually reveals himself to be a psychologically abusive and cruel man obsessed with The Nowhere, a world that exists within the dreams of children. Using his patients as his conduits, he hopes to one day access The Nowhere himself to find his long lost sister, at the cost of his patient's safety and sanity.
He is voiced by Kester Lovelace.
Personality[]
Otto gives off the impression of being a warm, loving psychologist at first, either through manipulation, or genuine affinity for his patients/victims during their earlier meetings. However, no amount of kindness can mask his desperate nature, as he does everything within his power to learn more about The Nowhere. His quest for knowledge takes precedent over his patient's well being, ranging from unprofessional behavior, to downright abuse.
What would usually be considered a redeeming feature, his love for his sister borders on obsession, and drives him to hurt others and explore the depths of The Nowhere.
Biography[]
When Otto was a child he was very close with his sister Cici. She would speak of vivid nightmares where she wandered another world. One day Cici vanished, pushing him to fixate on the world she spoke of to the point of obsession.
After studying Metaphysics, he became a child psychologist at The Counties Psychiatric Institute (presumably so he could have access to the dreams of troubled children). There he crossed paths with Noone. It's unknown if she was his first victim or not, but over the course of their conversations she would give him vivid accounts of her treks through various strange locations in The Nowhere, and encounters with the mysterious Candleman.
Growing increasingly hostile and impatient, Otto is eventually convinced that Noone is on the brink of crossing over into The Nowhere, and decided to take extreme measures in an attempt to join her. Connecting Noone to a mysterious apparatus, he uses it to make contact with the other side, and asks The Candleman to take him over to the other side. At first the Candleman seems to imply he's too old, but after further pleading with The Candleman, he tells him "a quarter will be granted after a toll set in torment is paid". After Otto attains this fresh kernel of knowledge, Noone is taken to The Nowhere and vanishes.
Emboldened by the "progress" he made with Noone, he sets his sights on his next victim afterward: a young boy named Ethan.
Trivia[]
- Despite being the only truly human main antagonist in the series, like the monsters of The Nowhere he is defined by obsessive behavior and the abuse of children. This could also imply that he eventually entered The Nowhere and became a monster himself.
- Many consider Otto to be the deuteragonist of The Sounds of Nightmares, due to his supportive and seemingly heroic role in the earlier episodes. However, because he is the mastermind driving Noone deeper into The Nowhere and consistently abusing her along the way, and because the series has no main antagonist of The Nowhere itself (The Candleman is less directly antagonistic than Otto is, and the other monsters only appear briefly in a single chapter each) Otto is the true villain of the series.
- Otto reacts strangely to the discovery of a raincoat in The Nowhere, implying that his sister might have worn one frequently. This has led to some to speculate that Cici is either Six or the protagonist of Very Little Nightmares.
