Otto Apocalypse is one of the main antagonists and a recurring boss fight in the 2016 action role-playing science fantasy mobile game Honkai Impact 3rd, appearing as one of the two main antagonists (alongside Kevin Kaslana) of Part 1: The Moon's Origin and Finality.
The heir of House Apocalypse, he falls in love with Kallen Kaslana, a woman he met at a young age when his life was miserable. Because of her actions against Schicksal, she is eventually sentenced to death, and his attempt to save her by unleashing a Honkai Beast during the execution only cause her to die when she tries to save the people in danger. After a revolution against his tyrannical sister, he manages to become the Overseer of Schicksal and, desperate to fix his mistake, he dedicates his life in an attempt to make her live again, committing any kind of atrocity in the process and becoming one of the main dangers to the stability of the world itself.
Appearence[]
Otto appears as a relatively young man, with green eyes and long blonde hairs that are tied into a ponytail in the very end. When he was Overseer of Shicksal, he mainly wore a white shirt with a blue coat on top of it, grey pants tied by a brown belt and boots of the same color. After resigning, he starts to wear white and black, with pants and parts of the shirt of the former color, while the shoes and the other parts of the shirt of the latter. He also has golden traits on his right arm and belt, with a pretty large cross tied to it of both golden and black colors. His ponytail also got higher and he has a red cloak tied to the back.
After obtaining the False God power and ascending, his appearance changes drastically. While his upper body remains human-like, with a white shirt and gloves of the same color, the rest of his body become far more different, his legs becoming larger and monstrous, with two wings on the side of them. On his back he has a giant golden wheel, with several black and golden wing attached to it, in addition to two larger arms of the same colors. On his face, he also has a black mask, hiding his eyes, nose and mouth entirely, and on his monstrous feats and hands he has large golden spikes.
Personality[]
In his youth, Otto was a timid kid, bullied by his brother and family to the point of believing he was a good for nothing. The meeting with Kallen Kaslana made him realize his potential, growing up to be a man that wanted to help others alongside the girl he loved, regardless of her reciprocating this feelings or not. However, all of this changed the day Kallen died, and he felt guilty for it since it was a plan he conceived to save her from execution that caused her death.
Obsessed with the idea of bringing her back, Otto changed drastically over the 500 years in which he lead Schicksal, becoming a manipulative, cunning and cruel individual, willing to do anything to obtain what he wants. He doesn't care about how many people would die during his plans, he would enact them anyway, with him cruelly experimenting on countless children and unleashing the Herrscher of the Void to let her cause disasters all over the world being clear examples of this.
He acts incredibly smug and arrogantly toward other, always one step in front of his opponents, being confident of his own abilities. However, he is also aware that his action are atrocious and unforgivable, recognizing it himself and often calling himself "the villain" or "a clown", indicating how he is the person who hates himself more than anyone else. Despite this, he still does terrible actions regardless, too obsessed with his objective of bringing back Kallen to care about the consequences that his actions have on others, carrying on and ruining the lives of millions just for the sake of a single individual that, to him, is everything he ever cared about.
But despite this, he does care about other people outside Kallen. While he initially created her as just a clone of Kallen, he grew fond of Theresa, treating her like his own daughter and believing she would grow to be a great leader, one that would make the world forget about him and his atrocities, even personally sewing her coat for her coronation as the new Overseer of Schicksal before his death. He also show genuine respect for his enemies, like Fu Hua and Welt Yang, calling them his old friends despite their relationship not being positive at all. Lastly, he does care about the Valkyries he trained, genuinely believing in his teachings, treasuring Durandal most of everyone else, who he admit to have manipulated for her entire life, growing her up with love while using her as a pawn. However, he is still more than willing to harm all of them if this can bring him closer to the realization of his objective, showing that, while he does love and care for others, this love is not enough to make him put aside his centuries-long purpose.
He also genuinely believe in love and the power that it can bring, openly admitting to use this power to his own advantage during his conversation with Fu Hua after the latter was defeated by the Herrscher of the Void. He uses love, emotions and connections as tool for his own purposes, but he also respect this powers and believe they can bring miracles otherwise impossible to achieve, with his love for Kallen being what pushed him to carry on for hundred of years.
His determination is his most notable feature, something that pushed him forward and allowed him to perform miracles, all in his search to allow the person he loved to have another chance at life, to redeem his past mistake and make Kallen live again. He doesn't care if she doesn't' reciprocate her feeling, nor does he care if she would be disgusted by his action to bring her back, as long as at least a version of the Kallen he loved can be saved and move on with her life, even without him.
In the end, Otto is an incredibly complex and layered character, obsessed with bringing Kallen back, willing to commit atrocities and be considered the villain by everyone to do so, all while still caring for certain people he could hurt in the process. He believe in the teachings he transmits to the Valkyries, but at the same time use and manipulate this teachings to his own advantage, not caring about the suffering he could bring with his actions. As he says himself, he is biggest fool of them all.

Trivia[]
- Because of his atrocious actions that caused most of the events in the game, Otto is often referred to as one of the most disliked characters in the series. However, he is also widely considered one of the well-written characters in the game by many fans, making him a highly polarizing character.
- His design seems to have inspired the appearance of several characters in Genshin Impact and Honkai: Star Rail, which makes sense given that they all take place within the same setting, albeit in different worlds.
- Given his name and that he is from Europe, Otto is most likely of German or Austrian origins.
- His False God form seems to be inspired by the biblically accurate representation of a Seraphim[1]; the highest-ranking celestial beings in the hierarchy of angels.
- He enjoys producing games, with one of his most successful one being "Kallen Fantasy", a parody of "Final Fantasy". Even make Yae as the main villain out of petty because Kallen love her more than him.
