Dr. Otto Gunther Octavius is the main antagonist of Season 1 of the 2025 superhero series Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man.

He is a former Oscorp scientist who betrayed Norman Osborn and stole his technology to sell to criminals.

He was voiced by Hugh Dancy.

History[]

Background[]

“	I brought Otto into the fold at Oscorp years ago because I believed in him. In his ideas. [...] Otto hated sharing recognition with me for what we accomplished at Oscorp. After everything we'd been through, he stole the projects we worked on together and took them underground	„
	~ Norman Osborn on his former partnership with Otto.

Years before the events of the series, Otto Octavius was recruited to Oscorp by Norman Osborn, who had great faith in his intelligence. They worked on several projects together, but Otto felt that Norman was intellectually inferior to him and didn't want to share credit on their work. Thus, Otto stole all of his inventions from Oscorp and became a weapons dealer, selling the technology to street-level criminals.

Season 1[]

Otto Octavius was first seen selling technology to the supervillain who would later be known as Unicorn. After she left, Otto expressed his displeasure on his current situation to his assistant, Vincent. He claimed he deserved better, and Vincent assured him that his plans would soon come to fruition.

After tracing the gamma radiation Otto used to power his machines, Norman Osborn located Otto's hideout. Numerous police officers tried to apprehend him, but Otto incapacitated them by deploying a series of robotic arms. He attempted to flee his base, but he was stopped by the superhero Iron Man.

Now incarcerated, Otto was visited by Norman, who revealed he set up Iron Man to arrest Otto and that Oscorp now owned everything confiscated from his lair. Otto berated Norman and insisted that he had no substance deep down, but Norman simply mocked Otto for his imprisonment.

Otto later seen alone in his cell, making preparations to escape and enact revenge on Norman.

Appearance[]

Otto Octavius is a large, stocky white man with a dark brown bowl cut. He also wears square sunglasses, which seem to have a constant blue glare. For attire, Otto wears a green bodysuit with dark yellow accents. Over his bodysuit, he has a long white lab coat.

Personality[]

“	Otto: These people. this situation, it's all beneath me. Vincent: I know, sir, but we're almost there. Soon enough, you'll have everything you need to show the world the things a true genius is capable of. Otto: "Soon enough" is never soon enough, Vincent. My name should be held in higher regard than Stark, Banner, Osborn.	„

Thanks to his extremely high intelligence, Octavius is a highly entitled man. He views everyone around hom as his intellectual inferiors and loathes the idea of even interacting with other people. He is also extremely petty, as his entire motivation is primarily to spite Norman Osborn.

Unlike other versions, there is no deep tragedy or noble intentions with this incarnation of Otto. He is simply an fame-seeking egotist who cares about nothing but himself.

Trivia[]

Otto Octavius serves as a dark parallel of Spider-Man.
- Otto and Peter were brilliant scientists who served under Norman Osborn before leaving Oscorp. Otto felt he was too good for the company, while Peter felt betrayed when Norman used his research to build a portal. The difference is that Otto sought petty revenge while Peter moved on with his life. Had Peter become consumed by this betrayal, he would have ended up like Otto.
This is the second time where Doctor Octopus is played by a British actor (Hugh Dancy) who's doing an American accent. The first was Alfred Molina's Doctor Octopus.
Despite being the main antagonist of Season 1, he and Spider-Man haven't met face to face yet, although Peter Parker knows about him thanks to Norman Osborn. However, he is still responsible for creating the technology that villains, including Scorpion, have used thus far.
