Otto Stamper is a major unseen supporting antagonist in the Dead by Daylight franchise being tied to the origins of at least two of the Killers serving the Entity the Doctor and the Dredge respectively.

Biography[]

Early Life and Scientific Career[]

Otto Stamper was a brilliant but morally ambiguous scientist affiliated with Léry’s Memorial Institute. His philosophy—“information is everything and knowledge is power”—shaped the institute’s descent into unethical experimentation. Otto mentored Herman Carter, later known as The Doctor, encouraging him to abandon medical ethics in favor of psychological torture. Under Otto’s guidance, Carter developed cruel methods of extracting information from patients, ultimately turning on Otto himself. In a grim twist of fate, Otto was left in a vegetative state with electrodes jammed into his exposed brain—becoming both the architect and victim of his own ideology.

Cult Leadership and The Fold[]

Otto’s story takes a darker turn on Withered Isle, where he founded The Fold, a cult obsessed with purging “malthink”—impure thoughts. The Fold practiced isolation and ritualistic cleansing, believing that impure minds would summon a great evil. Their paranoia and repression eventually manifested The Dredge, a monstrous entity born from collective fear. Otto survived the cult’s collapse, possibly spared by the Entity itself for his role in feeding it. His transformation from scientist to cult leader reflects a descent into metaphysical obsession, where control over thought became a gateway to cosmic horror.

Symbolism and Multiversal Mystery[]

Otto Stamper exists as a recurring archetype in Dead by Daylight’s multiverse. Some fans speculate that the Otto who mentored The Doctor and the Otto who founded The Fold are different versions of the same man across alternate terras. Others see him as a symbolic constant—an embodiment of corrupted intellect, obsession, and the birth of monstrosity. Whether fractured across realities or unified by theme, Otto represents the dangers of unchecked knowledge and the seductive power of control.

Legacy[]

Though never seen in-game, Otto Stamper’s influence permeates Dead by Daylight’s lore. He is the unseen hand behind two of the Entity’s most terrifying killers: The Doctor and The Dredge. His legacy is one of manipulation, sacrifice, and the transformation of fear into power. Otto is not just a villain—he’s a mythic figure whose mind broke the boundaries between science, cultism, and the supernatural.

Trivia[]

  • There’s debate in the fandom about whether Otto Stamper from The Doctor’s lore and Otto from The Dredge’s lore are the same person. Some argue they exist in different “terras” or universes within Dead by Daylight’s multiverse.
