~ Ou Di Wan Lee explaining his views on the world after introducing his skilled assassins, whose presence keeps him on check. |
Ou Di Wan Lee (spelt Odi Wang Lee in the Aeon Genesis translation) is the main antagonist of the Imperial China chapter of Live A Live for the SNES and its remake for the Nintendo Switch. He is the master of the Indomitable Fist kung fu dojo that promotes strength above all and preference towards brute force over kindness and trust, with numerous disciples of his being bandits and thugs who torment the weak all over the lands.
In truth, he is one of the many incarnations of Odio, the Lord of Dark, whose hatred brought many villains over the span of history into existence, with Ou Di Wan Lee being his Imperial Chinese incarnation.
He was voiced by Takahiro Sakurai in Japanese and Ming Lo in English.
Biography[]
The Successor[]
Driven by his misanthropic rage, Odio used the statues left by his predecessor to create the many incarnations of himself throughout the history to punish humanity for their perceived sins. Ou Di Wan Lee was the incarnation born in China during its imperial times, an arrogant kung fu master who founded the Indomitable Fist art of kung fu, promoting power above kindness. Many disciples of his who follow his teachings are known to terrorize and harm the weak and defenseless.
As the Earthen Heart Shifu grew old and went to find a heir who would inherit his legacy as the one who would pass his teachings to new generations, finding three candidates in Lei Kugo, Yun Jou and Hong Hakka, Ou Di Wan Lee grew aware of him once Sun Tzu Wang was beaten by the shifu's hand and went to learn the Indomitable Fist kung fu. As Sun Tzu Wang distracted the shifu by terrorizing innocents, Wan Lee's disciples raided Earthen Heart kung fu dojo and killed two of three disciples, with only the most well-trained one surviving. Devastated by the loss of his two disciples, Earthen Heart Shifu embarked on a journey to put an end to Wan Lee's reign of terror, soon joined by the disciple after teaching them the ultimate technique of Earthen Heart — Heavenly Peaks Descent.
The shifu and disciple stormed into the Indomitable Fist dojo, defeating the many disciples before breaking right into Ou Di Wan Lee's private chambers. Wan Lee greets shifu and the surviving student, also introducing them to his elite and stating that he will accept shifu's challenge only once they all will be beaten. He states that he will not send them all at once due to his honor, but the student calls him out on his hypocrisy by stating that he sent a large gang to murder the shifu's students, which he excuses by claiming that his men are too weak to do anything on their own, hence why he sends them in groups, offering the duo to face his elite in limited numbers as an "apology for his earlier dishonor". In truth, however, he sought to wear down the shifu, knowing that his old age would give way to fatigue, after which he sent two of his elite assassins to finish the shifu and disciple off. When introducing them to his assassins, he outright states that they are so powerful they actually have a chance to defeat and overthrow him one day, hence why he always stays on guard when near them, decrying that trust and camaraderie are considered a weakness among the Indomitable Fist's disciples, and that strength is all that matters.
Realizing Wan Lee's ploy, the shifu decides to take on the assassins and tells his disciple to challenge Ou Di Wan Lee himself, telling them to remember the Heavenly Peaks Descent technique which he taught them. Sneering at the student and their perceived weakness, Wan Lee accepts the challenge, but his arrogance became his undoing as the disciple outpowered him, using their Heavenly Peaks Descent technique, right before they delivered a roundhouse kick that sent him flying into the gong, thus finishing him off and putting an end to his reign of terror. As the Earthen Heart Shifu passed away from his wounds and age, his disciple would end up succeeding him in teaching the Earthen Heart kung fu style, while the Indomitable Fist style would be buried and lost to history.
The Final Chapter[]
Having sensed defeats of his incarnations, Odio decided to take matters into his own hands. In the sad ending route, he takes direct control of Ou Di Wan Lee and helps him defeat and kill the shifu's disciple as a way to prove that humanity is beyond redemption and to give Wan Lee his recourse. In the true ending, however, Odio brings the new master of Earthen Heart with many other heroes into the now-empty kingdom of Lucrece to teach them a lesson on humanity's evil. However, he gets defeated, and as a last-ditch attempt, Odio forces the heroes to fight his incarnations once more, with the Earthen Heart Master having to refight Ou Di Wan Lee. Despite this second assault, the arrogant kung fu master, along with other Odio incarnations, falls once again, thus proving Odio's world view wrong.
Trivia[]
- The "Wan" (王) in his name means "king" in Chinese, and the same character is pronounced as "O" in Japanese, making his name "Ou Di O Lee", fitting the Odio naming pattern; that said, his official Chinese name is called 李傲帝, with the "Wan" omitted. Instead, 傲帝 (Ao Di) can roughly translate to "arrogant king" while still fitting the Odio naming pattern.
