Ouken is the secondary antagonist of the action and adventure manga and anime series Ranking of Kings. He was born as a member of the royal family of the Underworld and was formerly the commander of the Order of the Underworld before manifesting his immortality causing him to slowly lose his humanity and to be sealed within the Underworld. He was later on freed by Miranjo.
He is voiced by Kouji Yusa in Japanese and Shawn Gann in English.
Appearance[]
As a human Ouken was a man of tall height and great build. He had black hair, and thick eyebrows, iris and mustache of the same colour. He wore a full body armor along with a dark cape on his back and around his waist. At some time in the past he wore a heavy golden armor. As an immortal Ouken’s entire body is covered with armor including his neck and face. He wears a helmet with an open mouth along with two horns on his head. The back of his armor also had a dark fur around his waist. During battle it was showed numerous times that Ouken no longer had a human body inside his armor, but rather only a dark fluid that can recover any damage that he receives. Ouken still possesses his handsome face, as shown when his mask is gone.
Personality[]
Before gaining immortality, Ouken was a very humble and kind individual and even considered to be the most gentle out of the three siblings. Upon becoming an immortal, Ouken not only slowly lost his initial nature but also his humanity which was slowly fading away, resulting in him becoming an extremely cold-hearted and devious warrior that loved to bring terror to everyone. He preferred to wait in front of his victim after defeating them waiting for them to slowly die rather than killing them immediately, showing his sadistic nature. Ouken's immortality has had a profound impact on his psyche. As he cannot die, he has lost all sense of empathy and compassion for others. He sees mortals as mere playthings, to be used and discarded at his whim. His once-noble aspirations had been replaced by a desire for power and control over all those around him. Now with the loss of his initial self, he laughs maliciously rather than produce normal human speech.
His original personality is restored by his brother King Desha along with his mortality and sanity.
Biography[]
Ouken was one of the three brothers who plotted to overthrow their father Satun, the original king of the Underworld. Unlike his power-hungry siblings, Ouken was a kind-hearted and loving man who dreamed of creating an order of knights that shared his values. However, on his 25th birthday, he gained true immortality, which slowly erased his humanity until nothing was left and transformed him into a remorseless monster. He now takes pleasure in causing pain to others. Because of this major change of him, his brother locked him up in the Underworld.
That is until Miranjo came to free him for the purpose of wanting him to take down the Bosse Kingdom. Despite all the prisoners being infamous, Ouken is feared the most by those who know him. He proved his strength by easily defeating Kingbo, a former king and skilled warrior, in a brief altercation. Later on he easily overpower and leaving one of Queen Hiling's bodyguards Anne in a life-threatening situation before being saved by the queen.
Ouken then walks towards the capital city of Bosse Kingdom, after the first conflict. This behavior is highly concerning and poses a significant threat to the safety and well-being of the citizens within the kingdom. He soon after confronted by one his brother Despa along with group of the Order of the Underworld. With the help of his second brother they manage to bring down Ouken with numerous remarkable thunderbolt attacks. He soon after restrained with ropes and was ready to be send back to where the Underworld where he was supposed to be. However Ouken manages to break the restrains by damage his own body.
He was then called by Miranjo in the battle where she had struggles. He defeats all the soldiers of the Underworld as well as Apeas. With seemingly nobody able to counter Ouken, Boji arrives at the battlefield. Boji was able to easily land significant damages on him with his swordsmanship but the immortal could easily recover from the damaged caused by the child. Boji is then soon after coming close to his defeat with the knight now began to landing more attacks at his turn. Kage was furious leading him to swallow Ouken entirely. This gave a short amount of time for more allies to come at the battle for aid. With the arrival of the Big Four; Domas, Bebin, Apeas, and Dorshe Ouken was once again overpowered once again by their techniques but recovered his body instantly with the dark fluid that places his body back. Some time after the fight is over with Ouken having defeated all his new opponent, Bosse who was reincarnated then arrives to deal with him. In Daida’s appearance he repeatedly smashed the knight into a flat pieces of metals. His body then soon took back to its shape. Knowing that no matter how significant of damages that hits him, Ouken could never be defeated due to his boundless regeneration, Boss then taps on the ground to look for a spot where he could grab a giant stone to which he then makes a tiny hole in the center. He then smashes Ouken to pieces like he did before with his gigantic amount of strength and puts his squishes his remaining to fit inside the hole then sealed it with rocks.
Ouken's headless body became relatively passive, and slowly shambled in the direction of its head. Despa and the Order of the Underworld followed him closely, needing to restore Ouken but planning to immediately subdue him once again. At length, the party arrived at a small lake in the countryside, where they discovered Ouken's head had been swallowed by a humongous catfish. The body heedlessly shoved itself into the catfish's mouth to retrieve its head. Hours later, guards of the kingdom tied the boulder which contained Ouken inside on a chart. Kingbo who managed to survive against his fight with Ouken attacks the knights and cuts the boulder freeing Ouken for the last time. He then beheads the immortal’s head and quickly throws his head towards the sky. Ouken’s dark fluid tries to catch his flying head but is cut by Kingbo. The head lands in a lake where is then swallowed by a giant fish making it beyond the limit of Ouken's regeneration.
Ouken's headless body displayed a docile demeanor as it slowly made its way towards its severed head. The Order of the Underworld, led by Despa, followed closely behind with the dual purpose of restoring Ouken and immediately subduing him once again. Eventually, they arrived at a small countryside lake where they discovered that Ouken's head had been swallowed by a massive catfish. Without hesitation, Ouken's body plunged into the catfish's mouth to retrieve its missing head.Meanwhile, Desha Ouken’s brother was given the title as the number one king which allowed him to enter the Divine Treasure Vault. With the access of the vault he is aware that it contains an artifact that allows him to cure and bring back his brother to normal. With the demon there he agreed with a pact to restore his brother back in exchange for his memory to be erased. Ouken then soon after returned to his previous state as a human.
