Áurea, also known as Our Lady of the Charred Visage, is a supporting antagonist and boss in the indie game Blasphemous.

Biography[]

Áurea was once an attractive young woman. Even as a baby, her face was so beautiful that multiple artists took her as a model for their creations. Her face was so recognizable that people started worshiping her as a living symbol of divinity. Over time, their obsession with her beauty took her out on procession and replaced their own religious images with her, much to her horror. Losing sanity from all the unwanted attention, Áurea took it upon herself to rid her own beauty and poured boiling oil on her face, heavily scaring her. She took a position as a nun for a convent. As she aged, Áurea grew old and no longer resembled her beautiful face, except for half of her face which was untouched from her burnt scar. People saw this as a sign for the gods and worshiped her once more, establishing the Convent of Our Lady of the Charred Visage. Under the Lady's watch, the nuns performed rituals where they pour boiling oil on their faces to be accepted to the convent's ranks.

In the Penitent One's quest, he is sent out to find the three Holy Wounds to complete the Three Humiliations in order to open the door leading to the Mother of Mothers. One of the Holy Wounds was located within the Lady's own church, the Covenant of Our Lady of the Charred Visage. The Lady took it upon herself to guard her most sacred relic and attacked the Penitent One. In her battle, the Lady's weak spot is her exposed brain in the middle of her forehead. The Lady does not attack with her head, but rather with her hand casting three different magical spells at the Penitent One; one is a laser telegraphed where it is aimed via a white line. After losing enough health, the beam becomes four beams shot in a rotating cross pattern. Another attack is a barrage of fireballs that rain down on the Penitent One. The last spell is a line of larger fireballs that are slowly fired at the Penitent One. If his aim and timing is correct, the Penitent One can strike the balls back at the Lady to damage her. In the second phase after losing half of her health, the Lady brings out her second hand that can shoot out a different spell, making the battle more difficult. Ultimately, the Penitent One achieves victory and the Lady retreats as the non-scared portion of her face starts bleeding yellow oil. With the Lady out of the way, the Penitent One obtains the Holy Wound of Compunction.
