Owen Paddock is the main antagonist of the 2023 action comedy film Hidden Strike.
He is a former special forces officer turned Unicorp mercenary attempting to steal tons of oil from a Chinese oil refinery.
He was portrayed by Pilou Asbæk, who also played Euron Greyjoy in Game of Thrones, Wafner in Overlord, Ethan Sacks in Run Sweetheart Run, Cyrus/Nemesis II in Samaritan and Kordax in Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom.
Biography[]
In the heart of Iraq, an oil refinery owned by the Chinese firm Unicorp falls victim to an assault orchestrated by the seasoned mercenary Owen Paddock. Leading the charge to secure the evacuation of civilian employees through the perilous Highway of Death is Luo Feng, also known as "Dragon," at the helm of his private security company. Amidst the chaos, Feng finds himself entangled in a strained relationship with his daughter Mei, who harbors resentment due to his absence during her mother's demise, attributed to a top-secret mission.
Meanwhile, former US Marine Chris Van Horne, driven by the dire need to finance the repair of a rural village well, reluctantly aligns himself with his mercenary brother Henry. The mission takes a dark turn when the mercenaries, claiming pursuit of a past adversary, orchestrate a massive sandstorm using a rocket truck to mask their attack on Feng's convoy. In the ensuing skirmish, they manage to pilfer two of the eleven buses.
As Feng's convoy repels the attackers and clears the sandstorm, it becomes apparent that five civilians, including Professor Chang and her son, have been abducted from Bus 8. Confrontations arise between Chris and his brother Henry, unveiling a sinister plan led by Owen to reactivate the refinery for a lucrative oil trade. Chris, enraged, departs, leading to Owen's ruthless execution of Henry and two loyal mercenaries.
Discovering the abduction of the civilians, Feng seeks out Chris, unveiling his intentions and the tragic loss of his father during a rebel ambush encouraged by Chris's former private security group at the Highway of Death. Meanwhile, Owen intimidates Professor Chang into cooperation through violence, aiming to retrieve crucial codes she possesses.
As Feng and Chris join forces to combat Owen's men, a pivotal moment arises when Chris sacrifices the codes to protect the village. The revelation strengthens Feng's trust in Chris, who emphasizes the village as his newfound family. Together, they thwart Owen's grandiose oil heist plan by causing a chain reaction of explosions among the tanker trucks.
In the ensuing high-stakes car chase, Owen's determination to escape leads to a dramatic turn of events. Despite his efforts to navigate an escape route along the side of a cliff, Owen's ATV careens precariously at the cliff's edge. The vehicle tumbles into the abyss below, marking the end of Owen Paddock's reign of terror. Feng and Mei, witnessing this unexpected demise, find themselves caught between mourning Chris's perceived demise and the resolution of their harrowing encounter with Owen. It is later revealed Chris survived the encounter and reunites with Feng and Mei. After getting picked up by Feng's soldiers, Feng's team arrest the perpetrators behind the oil heist on the ship. At the village, Chris and Feng fix the well and are informed of a new mission in which Feng offers Chris to join. Chris accepts the offer, setting off on a new adventure.
Personality[]
Although Owen was displayed and well-charismatic and soft-spoken person during his introduction fixing the well, he is really ruthless, blood-thirsty, greedy, and selfish. He has no care for anyone but himself, this spreads to the people who work for him as he kills Henry and his supporters. He has no issue killing off innocent civilians as shown when he demands the codes from Chang by killing one hostage and attempting to kill her son, even shown having international rebels attack the oil refinery and endanger the hundreds of innocents, and at one point using Chris' compassion for the nearby village and the orphans by threatening the community just to get what he wants. He also makes sure to kill anyone who attempts to stop him, even if it’s the last thing he does. That was shown during his defeat, where his ATV was keeping Feng and Mei from falling off the cliff, failing to get away as he plummets to his death, he smiles and the rope goes down with him, however that smile fades and Fend and Mei release themselves and Owen would die alone.
