| ~ Owen breaking down at his role in Shelby's death. |
Owen Reese is a young man who, along with a convicted felon orchestrated the robbery of his girlfriend's home that led to the murder.
He is portrayed by Matt Pratt.
Background[]
Not much is known about him other than that he met Shelby Denton at The Grill, a catering company for felons. The two formed a relationship, and Owen fell in love with her. Shelby's brother Jordan looked up to Owen. When Shelby's mother disapproved, the two saw each other in secret, and Jordan would follow them to their secluded spot.
Eventually, he and Shelby see each other less, and he becomes determined to win her back. To fulfill this desire, he approached the paroled robber, Frank Carriger, and enlisted his help to scare his girlfriend's judgmental mother so Shelby would return to him for comfort. He told Carriger that he could help himself with the money lying around if he did. After showing him the Denton house, Carriger agreed to help, and Owen supplied him with the alarm code.
Disco Bob[]
Having gotten grounded for drinking by his father, Owen was forced to stay home while Carriger carried out the plan. Still, it ended up going awry when he found nothing and ended up killing Shelby and her mother by shooting them dead while leaving Jordan wounded, though he escaped the house. Intelligence investigated, and suspicions fell on the father, Wes Denton. It was revealed that he had life insurance for his wife, and they were struggling financially.
Officers Sean Roman and Kim Burgess soon found out about Shelby's relationship with Owen. They visit his home, with his father voicing how Owen was taking Shelby's murder hard before calling him out to speak with the cops. Owen is sad but doesn't tell the cops he is responsible for the tragedy, and they ask him for help finding Jordan. He is shocked and somewhat relieved to hear Jordan may have survived, giving a location that he and Shelby would often go and saying that may be where Jordan is. Indeed, the wounded Jordan Denton is found and taken to a hospital. After he regains consciousness, Jordan identifies Carriger as the one who really robbed the house.
Intelligence tracked Carriger at the train station and caught him. As he was arrested, Carriger betrayed Owen by revealing that he had arranged for it to go down. This led to Owen's off-screen arrest and being brought to the station.
In interrogation, the guilty Owen is silent, and Sgt. Hank Voight told him that even if he doesn't talk, he still makes good money working overtime, and Det. Jay Halstead walks in to reveal Carriger is pinning it all on him, meaning he gets to make a deal while Owen takes the ride. They angrily list all the charges he will face: double murder, attempted murder of a child, and burglary. With the pressure on him, he starts to cry and stops Halstead from leaving by revealing how he and Shelby met before mentioning that he planned the robbery to win back his girlfriend after scaring her judgmental mother. Owen frantically states he had no idea Frank would execute them, as Voight bitterly notes he didn't think it through. Owen defends himself, saying Mrs. Denton should have given Frank the money before Halstead coldly reveals to Owen that the Denton family was broke and that Shelby had no idea her family would lose their house. After Voight confirms it, Owen is grief-stricken with shock at being unaware and having the family killed for nothing. He sadly says that he loved Shelby.
He is then incarcerated for being an accessory to double murder, attempted murder, and burglary.
