“ | Ok. Listen up. Two things control this world. Biology, and history. I know this is not a popular thing to say nowadays, but men have naturally evolved to be larger and stronger than women. There’s a reason for that. Our forefathers were hunters. They had to chase down game and subdue it. They hunted, or they starved, it’s in our DNA gentlemen! We’re meant to be killers! This is our biological imperative. And no amount of civilization, no amount of progress, no amount of liberal humanism can alter that genetic truth. You can’t argue with science. And science tells us we are meant to pass down the necessary DNA through the bloodline, through women, through impregnating women and having children. That is science. And that is history. | „ |

~ Owen Whistler’s last words before Angie Phelps kills him, as well as his most infamous quote. |
Owen Whistler is one of the two main antagonists (alongside Angie Phelps) of the horror drama slasher Peacock film They/Them (pronounces They-SLASH-Them).
He is the director of the Whistler Gay Conversion Camp who, at first glance, is a charismatic and open-minded individual who respects the autonomy and freedom of the campers. In truth, he is an abusive and oppressive authority figure who psychologically breaks his campers and children, all in order to forcefully convert them into cisheteronormative roles defined by his controlling philosophy.
He was portrayed by Kevin Bacon, who also played Martin Thiel in Criminal Law, Wade in The River Wild, Sean Nokes in Sleepers, Ray Duquette in Wild Things, Sebastian Caine in Hollow Man, Joe Hickey in Trapped, Jacques in Super, Sebastian Shaw in X-Men: First Class, Bobby Hayes in R.I.P.D., Cade Grant in Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F, and John Labat in MaXXXine.
Personality[]
Owen Whistler presents himself as a charismatic and unproblematic authority figure, attempting to convince the other campers that he is open-minded while promising not to forcibly convert the campers. In reality, Owen is an abusive and controlling individual underneath his facade of tolerance, as he repeatedly engages in homophobic and transphobic acts of cruelty to the campers. He is shown to adhere to Social Darwinist beliefs, as well as rigid traditionalist conceptions of masculinity; in his speech to the campers at the shooting range, he proceeds to rant about the supposed genetic superiority of men over women, justifying his misogyny through making appeals to genetics and history to solidify his arguments.
Throughout the film, Owen shows no care towards anyone, not even towards his old dog Duke; in one cruel moment, Owen forces a camper to fatally shoot Duke on the threat of watching the camp director torture the dog to death. In his final moments before his demise at the hands of Angie Phelps, he displays no remorse for the abuse and torture he subjected to the victims of his conversion camp.
Biography[]
Background[]
Not much is known about Owen’s life, except he ran the Whistler camp for decades, in which he psychologically and physically abused and tortured LGBTQIA children in order to convert them, one of these being electroshock therapy. One of these people were Angie Phelps, who he electrocuted almost to death when she was 14 years old and ultimately causing death of a few of her friends psychologically damaging her psyche.
They/Them[]
LGBTQ teenagers arrive at the Whistler camp and are greeted and welcomed by Owen who tell them that he is not homophobic and the camp is a safe space for them where they will not be forced into becoming non-LGBTQ. After confiscating their electronics, he hosts a therapy session with the newly arrived campers. After discovering that Alexandra, a lesbian transgender girl, is transgender he forces her to stay in the boy's cabin after humilating her.
One night, Owen forces the campers to spend the night in the forest surrounding the camp and allows them to return to camp in the morning. Owen decides to teach the boys traditional male gender roles by having them shoot at targets. He then forces a young gay man named Toby to shoot and kill their hound dog named Duke. Jordan, a transgender non-binary person, shoots the dog to death instead. Gabriel, Owen's spy, seduces and has sex with Stu, a gay fraternity boy. After discovering this, Owen and his son Zane torture Stu through electro-shock aversion therapy.
After discovering the bloodied and mutilated corpses of the staff, Angie confronts Owen, revealing herself to be the murderer who killed the staff. She reminds him of who she is and decided to kill every conversion therapy worker in order to close every conversion therapy camp. Owen knocks to the floor and attempts to strangle her to death. Angie then impales Owen on a taxidermied rhinoceros horn and then slits his throat, killing him.
