~ Pahl's insults to Daenerys, as translated by Missandei. |
Oznak zo Pahl is a minor antagonist in the A Song of Ice and Fire novel series and its television adaptation, Game of Thrones. He is a noble of the Great Masters from Meereen and a scion of the House of Pahl, one of the ancient slaving families of Meereen.
He was portrayed by Daniel Naprous, who had shared the role of Darth Vader with fellow Game of Thrones actor Spencer Wilding in Rogue One.
Biography[]
Early life[]
Oznak zo Pahl is a Meereenese noble and member of the House of Pahl. He had once cut the liver out of a man named Scarb for looking at a lady in what Oznak considered a disrespectful manner, to the point of calling it "rape." Scarb's friend, the sellsword Ben Plumm, had been upset, but Oznak escaped any serious repercussions due to his noble status, with his uncle being the richest man in Meereen and his father being the commander of the city guard. Fearing Oznak would kill him as well, Ben fled through Meereen's sewers.
A Song of Ice and Fire[]
After being warned by the Fall of Astapor and the Battle Near Yunkai, the Meereenese decide not to make any contact with the invader, Daenerys Targaryen, and retreat behind the city's mighty defenses. In order to starve Daenerys and her host, which includes both her army of 20,000 combatants and 60,000 refugees and freedmen from Astapor and Yunkai, the Meereense burned their own lands, leaving the enemies with scorched fields and poisoned wells. Due to this, Daenerys cannot afford to lay a prolonged siege.
During the First Siege of Meereen, after the sellsword Mero of Braavos failed to assassinate Daenerys, Meereen decided to send Oznak zo Pahl as the city-state's champion to settle the matter through a single battle. Oznak rides out of the city's great walls on a white charger, armed with a fourteen-foot lance, and demands that Daenerys and her forces send forth their champion in a single battle. As the invaders initially do not send anyone, Oznak keeps challenging them by insulting men for an hour and even leads the city's defenders in urinating in her direction. Finally, Daenerys accepts the challenge and sends her eunuch bodyguard, Strong Belwas, a freedman and former pit fighter of Meereen, as her champion. She thinks Belwas is the perfect choice since she can easily spare him; his death as an ex-slave would not give Oznak prestige, and a defeat to a freedman would be an insult.
Oznak's charges are sidestepped by Belwas three times; then, on the fourth charge, Belwas wounds Oznak's horse. Oznak leaps clear of his mount and begins a sword fight against Belwas, who allows Oznak to wound him in the stomach once before killing him. Belwas then removes Oznak's head from his body and lifts it up high for the defenders on Meereen's walls to see. The defenders start to fire arrows, but Belwas is too far away, and then he puts himself in a squatting position, defecates in the direction of Meereen, wipes himself using Oznak's cloak, loots his corpse, and kills Oznak's horse.
After Oznak's death, for the whole following day and even night, a bloody siege takes place. Oznak's father, commander of the Meereenese city guard, is killed defending the gates of Meereen. The siege ends with Meereen being savagely sacked, mainly by rioting slaves of Meereen and Daenerys' freedmen and looters from Astapor and Yunkai. This will lead to the beginning of a long plague of problems and chaos. Oznak's three uncles, including the city's wealthiest man, are among the one hundred and sixty-three Great Masters crucified and disemboweled in Daznak's Pit under Daenerys's orders.
During her reign over Meereen, Queen Daenerys is warned by Skahaz mo Kandaq, the "Shavepate," that all the ancient families of the Great Masters are her enemies, especially the Pahls, who are now ruled by women, whom the Shavepate describes with such warning as "bitter old women with a taste for blood. Women do not forget. Women do not forgive." With multiple killings by the resistance movement of the Sons of the Harpy continuing in Meereen, Daenerys has every noble family of Meereen who is of dubious loyalty send her a child as a hostage. Among these children, who are made Daenerys's cupbearers, is one of Oznak's relatives, Kezmya zo Pahl, who is vain and pretty. One of Oznak's living relatives is a ship captain.
Game of Thrones[]
When Daenerys Targaryen and her army approached Meereen, Pahl was sent out by the Great Masters to fight a champion of Daenerys's choosing. While waiting for Daenerys to decide, he insulted the Unsullied, who make up a large portion of her host, for being eunuchs by urinating in their general direction, and claimed that Daenerys was actually a man who passed herself off as a woman.
Even though Grey Worm and Jorah Mormont were both itching to take Pahl down a peg or two, Daenerys ultimately decided to have Daario Naharis take on Pahl. Refusing a horse, Naharis waited for Pahl to get close enough on his horse, then killed Pahl's horse out of under him with a well-thrown knife. Before Pahl could recover, Naharis decapitated him, then returned the gesture Pahl had made by urinating on the ground next to him.

Trivia[]
- Executive Producer Dan Weiss decided to use the dialog of the French Taunter from Monty Python and the Holy Grail as the basis for Pahl's further untranslated insults. Except for a few minor adjustments, it matched almost exactly what the French Taunter said to King Arthur.
