Pablo Emilio Escobar Gaviria, better known as Pablo Escobar is the main antagonist of Netflix series Narcos, and a minor character in its prequel, Narcos Mexico. He is a fictionalized version of the real life Colombian drug lord and narcoterrorist, Pablo Escobar. He was considered the king of cocaine, the biggest drug lord in history, and the richest drug dealer in the world.
He was portrayed by Wagner Moura, who also portrayed Laszlo Sosa in The Gray Man and Death in Puss in Boots: The Last Wish.
Appearance[]
Escobar's depiction in the TV show is not too far from real life, as in the show, Escobar is depicted as a slightly overweight, tall man with dark, long hair and white skin. Additionally, he has a moustache, much like his real-life counterpart. However, after his escape from prison, some of his hair is shown to be graying, and by the end of season 2, he is depicted with a very heavy beard which is graying. However, there are several inconsistencies with his real-life counterpart:
- Escobar in real life had a thicker moustache.
- Escobar in real life was fatter.
- Escobar in real life was 5'6, while the actor that portrayed Escobar, Wagner Moura, is 5'11.
Personality[]
In Narcos, Escobar is portrayed as incredibly ruthless and violent as the founder and the leader of the Medellin Cartel, with him, and the cartel, in general, being known for their outlandish displays of violence through their sicarios, (hitmen) who have orchestrated events such as the 1989 bombings of Aviance Flight 203 and the bombing of the DAS headquarters in Bogota. Furthermore, Escobar himself is also capable of ruthless displays of violence, such as when he beat William Galeano to death with a pool stick upon him accusing the latter of stealing money from him and betraying him, or when he shot Colonel Horacio Carillo multiple times in the head as revenge for killing his cousin.
Furthermore, Escobar is also very strategic, with him usually bribing judges and other political figures to cooperate with him. If they refused, they would be killed directly by him or through his sicarios. Furthermore, he made sure that the Medellin Cartel itself was a loose partnership of criminals involving people such as him, the Ochoa Brothers, Carlos Lehder, and Gonzalo Rodriguez Gacha. Each of these criminals also took distinct roles in making sure that the cartel's operations ran smoothly, further hinting at Pablo's ability to strategize. Another piece of evidence that shows that Escobar is able to strategize effectively is the fact that he attempts to win over the populace and the poor folk of Medellin. This is to make sure that he could avoid being apprehended by authorities, as the main goal of identifying with the poor was to make sure that they would prevent the police searching for him properly.
However, as the series progresses, Pablo Escobar starts to descend into paranoia by the early 1990s as his empire fell apart, mainly because of the fact that the Colombian government, the Search Bloc, the DEA, and the Cali Cartel were all trying to hunt him down towards the end of Season 1 and for much of Season 2. A lot of this paranoia is evidenced by the fact that he often had safehouses that had built-in tunnels that provided an exit to a secluded area from which he could escape from, often staying just a few nights at any given safehouse. This is also evidenced by the fact that he kills William Galeano and Kiko Moncada without any proof that they betrayed him inside of his own prison, for which the government could essentially hunt him down.
Despite all of this, Pablo Escobar has a soft side for his immediate family and his underlings in the Medellin Cartel, although this is inconsistent in some cases. For example, while Escobar loves his wife a lot and tries his best to comfort her, he cheats on her with news reporter Virginia Vallejo from 1981 to 1987. Other than this, he loves the rest of his family unconditionally, given the fact that he burned about $2 million in front of his daughter, and seems to find time to spend time with his son by playing soccer and video games with him. Furthermore, he was also genuinely saddened when his cousin was killed by Horacio Carrillo's men.
