Pablo Vargas is a major antagonist in the Criminal Minds season one episode "Machismo". He is a serial rapist and serial killer who murders the elderly mothers of the women he rapes.
He was portrayed by Alejandro Patiño.
History[]
Past[]
A secret cross-dresser since childhood, Pablo endured beatings and ridicule from his family for his fetish, until, as a young man, Pablo killed his own mother. He then became a serial rapist, attacking random women while wearing a dress. One of his would-be victims, Milagros Villanueva, mocked him for wearing a dress. Seeking to reassert his manhood, he tried to rape Milagros' mother, but could not maintain an erection, and killed her in a fit of rage. He then began killing his rape victims' mothers so as to inflict even more pain on them. By the time of the episode, he has raped 14 women and murdered their mothers.
In "Machismo"[]
After killing most of his victims' mothers, he tries to kill Milagros' mother, Nina. Before he can find her, however, his rape victims track him down, aided by an offender profile developed by the FBI's Behavioral Analysis Unit (BAU), who had come to the village to help local police find the killer. Pablo's victims beat and stab him repeatedly before finally castrating him, leaving him to bleed to death.

- Pablo is inspired by multiple real-life serial killers and rapists:
- Juana Barraza, a.k.a. "La Mataviejitas", meaning "The Little Old Lady Killer"; a Mexican serial killer of the elderly originally mistaken for a cross-dressing man because of her build, which resulted in an embarrassing mass detainment of transvestites and transgender women across the region before she was identified.
- Andrei Chikatilo, a.k.a. "The Rostov Ripper", a Russian serial killer of women and children and the face of the Soviet Union's biggest scandal of disregarding violent crime in its former territories. Chikatilo also had a job in a factory, as well as was regarded as impotent and socially awkward.
- The "Boston Strangler", an unidentified American serial killer/rapist of various women across the namesake city in home invasions, starting with elderly women, then changing to younger women. Prime suspect Albert DeSalvo is an arrested serial rapist and molester of women in home invasions, often at knifepoint, with a history of abuse in his family that extended to violent torture of his mother.
- José Antonio Rodríguez Vega, a.k.a. "The Old Lady Killer", a Spanish serial killer/rapist responsible for raping and murdering elderly women, after a previous record of sex offenses and problems between himself and his mother.
- Francisco Guerrero Pérez, a.k.a. "El Chalequero", a Mexican serial killer/rapist of women in prostitution, with a similar account of kidnapping at knifepoint and raping the only woman who lived, Lorenza Urrutía, similarly to how Vargas would kidnap and rape women.
- Eddie Mosley, an American recidivist serial rapist and serial killer, originally kidnapping and raping girls and women, then escalating to murder; once also framed another man with intellectual challenges for murdering a woman, similarly to how Vargas left the gay son of one murdered woman to be falsely arrested.
- Akku Yadav, an Indian serial killer/rapist and gang leader, best known for attacking the slums he sieged for his crimes, then being violently butchered to death by the women and girls he raped and otherwise targeted.
- Pablo Vargas is the first antagonist in the series to not have said more than a single word a single word on-screen, his only notable quote being repeated by others and once saying "hola" into a mirror before smashing it.
- Pablo is also the first antagonist who is not arrested or killed by the BAU, instead being killed by his own victims.
