The Pah-wraits were a group of hostile non-corporeal entities introduced in the Star Trek: Deep Space Nine episode The Assignment . They were the same species as the Bajoran Prophets . Originally inhabiting the Celestial Temple, they were expelled by the Prophets to the Fire Caves of Bajor as false prophets.
From time to time the Pah-wraiths would possess individuals to further their goals of destroying the Prophets and conquering the galaxy. Such individuals included Keiko O'Brien, Jake Sisko, and Gul Dukat . Dukat was different than O'Brien and Sisko in that he was a willing vessel for the Pah-wraiths, and became their most devoted follower.
Following the Dominion War Dukat and Kai Winn Adami tried to free the Pah-wraits from the Fire Caves on Bajor, however Winn had a last minute change of heart when Dukat and the Pah-wraiths betrayed her and attempted to destroy the Book of the Kosst Amojan. Dukat and the Pah-wraiths killed her, but her death gave Benjamin Sisko the distraction to push Dukat into the fire pit, destroying the book and trapping Dukat with the Pah-wraiths forever within the fire caves.
