You will be entrusted with the study of the Earth's skies, the stars, the prophecies they hold, all that stuff. Ain't that fun? You will begin the studies of your Grimoire, which will grant you access to the mortal realm to study and observe, and you will grow to be a mighty prince of Hell, with your own legions to lead and pass on your knowledge to!
~ Paimon telling Stolas his duties as a prince of Hell.
I'm so good at daddying!
~ Paimon after hitting Stolas for bowing to Blitzo, also his most famous quote.

King Paimon of the Ars Goetia is one of the two overarching antagonists (alongside Satan) of the adult animated black comedy web series Helluva Boss.

Based on the demon-king of the same name in popular folklore, he is one of the most powerful demons in Hell and the father of Stolas. Unlike his son, who is a very empathic and loving individual despite his fearsome reputation, Paimon is an embodiment of lawful evil at its worst; despite his evil nature, he would prove crucial in securing the future relationship between Stolas and Blitzo, albeit completely unintentionally, and trapping him in a loveless marriage with the abusive Stella.

He was voiced by Jonathan Freeman, who also voiced Cash Buckzo in the same series and Jafar in the Aladdin franchise.

History[]

Paimon is introduced via a flashback to Stolas' childhood, he gives his son a rundown of his future duties and abilities as well as entrusts the Grimoire to him, allowing him access to the human world to better study the stars and grow his prophecy skills; despite tasking Stolas with such things Paimon is shown as very unconcerned about his offspring, having to ask a servant which child Stolas was as there were "so f***ing many of them".

He also coldly informed his young son of his future marriage to Stella and showed him a picture of a clearly deranged Stella, prompting Stolas to cry, this caused Paimon to try and demand his son quit crying, but after this failed to work he decided to take his son to a circus (simply to keep him quiet).

Paimon didn't go directly to said circus with his son, instead attending via a magic mirror and was concerned with gaining front-row seats while lamenting that he had to endure being near "poor" people, as the circus acts progressed Paimon was quite delighted by the show but Stolas was less excited until he set eyes upon a young Blitzo.

Noticing that his son had taken a liking to Blitzo, Paimon casually went to Blitzo's father and offered to buy him as a "gift" for Stolas' birthday, in the end, Blitzo's father agreed to this for only $5 and a condom (the amount Paimon's butler had in his pockets at the time) though was planning on using Blitzo to rob the Ars Goetia.

Paimon was last seen "welcoming" Blitzo alongside Stolas and openly scolding his son after he innocently bowed to the imp, reminding him not to bow to an imp and that it was Blitzo's job to bow to them.

Appearance[]

Paimon, like most of the shown Ars Goetia so far, is an anthropomorphic owl and dresses in very ornate, regal gear to show off his great power and wealth, he also has a number of Goetia symbols over his face and crown; like Stolas he has a much darker "true" demonic form but it has only been seen very briefly upon his introduction.

Personality[]

So far, Paimon has shown to be a dutiful yet negligent father, not remembering Stolas's name among his other kids, requiring his butler to remind him, and swearing openly in front of his son. He introduced Stolas to his responsibilities after he became old enough and gave him his grimoire, yet also arranged for him to marry without asking him how he felt about it, casually saying that the arranged marriage was non-negotiable a moment later. Despite this, he did take Stolas to the circus to cheer him up and get him to stop crying and later rented Blitzo to be his playmate, though he did the latter simply because he didn't want to deal with his son and even admitted this to Blitzo's father.

He clearly values his royalty and prestige, not attending the circus himself and instead being there through a magic mirror and even then was concerned about sitting away from the poor people in the audience. When Stolas bowed to Blitzo while introducing himself, Paimon slapped his son on the head, reminding him that commoners are supposed to bow to them and not the other way around.

He is also a hypocrite, as despite his negligence over Stolas and his few poor attempts at consoling him, he prides himself on being a good father. He slaps and calls Stolas an idiot for bowing to Blitzo, saying that he was supposed to bow to them, yet he himself is shown to be a useless and neglectful father. So far, in terms of parenting, Paimon has shown to be the complete opposite of Stolas, who would grow to be a caring, nurturing, and loving father to his future granddaughter, Octavia.

Outside of all this, Paimon does appear to enjoy entertainment as he happily applauded the circus imps during their performance. Ironically enough, this is the one not-so-bad trait that Stolas seemed to have inherited from his father, as he did the same with Robo Fizz's performance at Loo Loo Land.

Abilities[]

  • Influence: As a King in the Ars Goetia, Paimon hold immense authority and political power over hell, and is one of the most influential demons overall, placed only behind the Seven Deadly Sins.
  • Creation of Portals: Paimon can create portals, as shown in the series.
  • Reality Warping: Paimon can distort the ambient in its nearby, mainly by using a grey aura as it is shown in the series, and manifest abstract objects and figures out of his portals.
  • Conjuring: Paimon can conjure objects such as grimoires from his portals.
  • Demonic Transformation: Paimon can swipe out to a catastrophic form, made up of an agglomerate of several entities and figures and by grey energy.
  • Telekinesis: Paimon was able to manifest and telekinetically move a grimoire like his son.
  • Pyrokinesis/Teleportation: Paimon can conjure a tower of scarlet fire that could teleport him away and cause significant destruction.

Trivia[]

  • Despite holding the rank of "King" in the Ars Goetia, Paimon is not the highest figure in demonic royalty as he is below the Seven Princes (such as Asmodeus) and The Royal Family (Lucifer, Lillith and Charlie), this makes him more accurately a high-ranking aristocrat/nobility.
  • Paimon states that he has so many children to the point of where he does not remember many of their names, as shown when he forgets Stolas' name. If he is similiar enough to his mythological counterpart, he may have at least 71 different children.
  • He can be considered as the true antagonist of Helluva Boss as he was responsible and the reason why Stolas was married to Stella in the first place, as well as him meeting Blitzo, which makes Stolas and Blitzo to become in love, and resulted Stella into getting revenge on Stolas for cheating on him by hiring a hitman "Striker" to attempt to assassinate him
  • Paimon is named after a demon that is referenced in early grimoires. Like the version here, King Paimon has been depicted as a demon who keeps his face hidden. Additionally, Paimon is also described as a fallen angel who sided with Lucifer during his rebellion and became his most loyal servant, although it is currently unknown if this applies to Paimon in the series due to there being no mention of Lucifer ever starting a rebellion in Hazbin Hotel.
  • It is unknown whether or not Paimon is still alive during the current events of the series although judging from him being an immortal high ranking Demon it seems likely but he remains unseen for the most part.
  • Paimon is the first abusive/neglectful parent to be a funny and comedic father instead of being serious, while Cash Buckzo and Crimson have a few comedic moments, they're taken seriously.
  • Paimon resembles Jafar in both appearance and personality, fitting as they are both voiced by the same voice actor Jonathan Freeman.
