Biography[]
In Manga, Pandora was mention to had lose both of his mother and then his lover in magic show that gone wrong. But in anime version, the mother part was skip and his girlfriend part expand upon.
Pandora was an world-famous professional stage magician and illusionist (namely, "the greatest illusionist and magician since Harry Houdini himself," as he put it). He had everything: money, fame and was in love with his lovely assistant, Catherine (who was also his fiancée in the 4Kids dub), but one of his escape tricks (which he had practiced many times) went badly wrong, injuring him and scarring his face. He fell into despair and drove Catherine away, never seeing her again afterwards.
Pandora then met Marik, who promised to return Catherine to him if he defeated Yugi. As a result, Arkana became one of his Ghouls.
In Battle City, Pandora trapped Yugi Muto in a duel in which buzzsaws would move closer to them whenever a duelist lost life points and cut the loser's legs off (in the 4Kids version, they were dark energy disks would move closer to them whenever a duelist lost life points and trap their souls in the Shadow Realm when their life points reached zero). He dueled using two Black Magicians who looked quite different from Yugi's own Black Magician and disrespected his monsters to win and cheated. But Yugi defeated him due to Pandora's disrespect for his deck and unlocked his shackles. Yugi then saved Pandora from the buzzsaws before he could be cut (as Yugi believed that not even Pandora deserved to be amputated). Marik then spoke through Arkana to Yugi. In Manga version, Marik also make brought up his sad memories of his mother and girlfriend into his mind so he will commit suicide afterward.
Arkana made an additional appearance during Yami Marik's Duel with Mai Valentine at the Battle City Finals. After Marik's "Makyura the Destructor" was destroyed during their Shadow Game, Marik's memory of Arkana was erased, to which Marik showed sick satisfaction.
In the Waking the Dragons arc, Arkana makes a cameo as one of the "lost souls" seen alongside Yami Marik wandering about the sacred circle as Yami Yugi ventures to find his other half. So he presumebly commit suicide anyway in anime version.
Other Media[]
Yu-Gi-Oh! The Falsebound Kingdom[]
Pandora appears as a boss in the video game, Yu-Gi-Oh! The Falsebound Kingdom. He appears as a minion of Scott Irvine, rather than Marik Ishtar. You fight him on the level "Lost Cause" in the Yugi Campaign in the Anker-Hill region. He uses his version of the Black Magician and two Dark Sleep-Inviting Lucifers. He would send seven soldiers to Yugi's party which consists of magic and dark monsters. After they are defeated, the player, preferably Yugi can fight him. Once defeated, Scott deletes Pandora's programming and when defeated for the first time, Black Magician #2 joins the list of monsters.
The GBA game Yu-Gi-Oh! The Sacred Cards makes Pandora far more vicious and horrifying than his anime incarnation. he runs a card shop with an underground duel ring where the loser gets their legs cut off, in contrast to the anime where he only goes after Yugi.
Yu-Gi-Oh! Duel Links[]
Pick up on Manga version of Duel Monster storyline. Marik try to make him commit suicide by using his bad memories. But he used his persona to suppresse his true feeling and continue on to pursure his ambition.
When Yami Marik returned, Arkana rejoined the Rare Hunters, but was defeated and sent to the Shadow Realm. Arcana was later released once Marik's reign of terror came to an end.
Deck[]
Arkana plays a "Dark Magician" deck, featuring three copies of the titular monster, which he supports with an array of cards such as "Thousand Knives" and "Dark Renewal". Despite arrogantly declaring himself to be the ultimate archmage and master of the "Dark Magician", he was ignorant of the existence of "Dark Magician Girl" until Yugi summoned her during their duel. Arkana's "Dark Magicians" are illegally trimmed, which allowed him to ensure that at least one of them would be at the top of his deck after he shuffled it; this is likely the reason Yugi did not take any of them following his victory as per Battle City rules.
