|“||The people of the land from which these coins hail revere contracts above all else. In the name of money, I shall respect the contract between us... We shall, by whatever means necessary, become the heart that pumps money around the world. And, when the moment comes, that heart shall cease beating by our will alone.||„|
|~ Pantalone upon joining the Fatui.|
Pantalone, also known by his title Regrator, is an unseen antagonist in the 2020 action role-playing fantasy video game Genshin Impact.
Pantalone was the Ninth of the Eleven Fatui Harbingers, a group of influential and powerful individuals who acted as the chief lieutenants of the Tsaritsa of Snezhnaya. Codenamed "Regrator," he was enamoured with wealth and served as the economics overseer for Snezhnaya and the Fatui. Pantalone served as the unseen overarching antagonist of Yelan's Umbrabilis Orchis Chapter, Act I: "Calculated Gambit".
Pantalone was once a poor man who never received a Vision or any other kind of blessing from the Gods of Celestia despite his firm ambitions. Overtime he built a vast fortune and accumulated power by his own merit, partially as a way to spurn the Gods who had neglected him. Eventually he was approached by the Fatui, the military faction led by the Tsaritsa of Snezhnaya that governed the nation Snezhnaya. The plan of the Tsaritsa and the Fatui was to overthrow the Gods and impose a new societal structure on Teyvat. Agreeing with their plans for Teyvat, Pantalone joined the Fatui and became the Ninth of the Fatui Harbingers.
Machinations in Other Nations
|“||"Regrator" is the 9th of the Fatui Harbingers, though likely the first among them where wealth is concerned. However, his "wealth" is not a mere question of how much Mora he has to his name. He has a very unique understanding of wealth... And what he's planning may very well shake the world to its core.||„|
|~ Uncle Tian describing Pantalone.|
Eventually, the Fatui expanded their operations into Mondstadt, the nation ruled by the Anemo Archon Barbatos which was known for its wine and its high emphasis on the personal freedom of its citizens. Pantalone used his fortune to rent out the entire Goth Grand Hotel in the city of Mondstadt for an indefinite amount of time so that the Fatui diplomats stationed in Mondstadt could use it as their base-of-operations. He also planted a spy in Mondstadt posed as a wine merchant called Landa, whose secret goal was to destabilize the wine industry of the nation.
Regrator also began overseeing Fatui operations in Liyue, an ancient nation governed by the Geo Archon Morax where trade prospered and all of Teyvat's currency was minted. At some point one of Pantalone's secret trade routes in Liyue, which was transporting a coat made from the fur of an ancient mystical beast which Regrator intended to gift to the Tsaritsa, was attacked by Yelan. Yelan, who was a cunning agent of Liyue's Ministry of Civil Affairs, had lost a sentimental item of hers in an operation against the Fatui and as such took the coat from the convoy as recompense.
Sometime later, Pantalone was the mastermind of a Fatui plot to assassinate and replace Uncle Tian, a member of Liyue's ruling body the Liyue Qixing, with a mole of their own named Zhiyi. Pantalone placed a Fatui agent named Yusupov and his second-in-command Theofan in charge of overseeing the operation. Although Zhiyi did poison Uncle Tian, the operation was discovered by Yelan and a Traveler and the mole and Yusupov were taken into custody. Regrator had Theofan vanish with any remaining evidence, as he learned through spies that the Liyue authorities were planning to make moves on the Fatui agent.
Funeral for The Fair Lady
|“||Hehe, merely half a day... People say the Northland Bank's true currencies are blood and tears... But Mayor, even speaking as a banker, that sounds a little unconscionable.||„|
|~ Pantalone commenting on the shortness of the mourning period for La Signora.|
Pantalone, alongside the other Harbingers, later gathered in a cathedral in Snezhnaya for the funeral of La Signora, the Eighth Fatui Harbinger, who had been executed by the Electro Archon Baal during a Fatui plot in the nation of Inazuma. Pulcinella, the Fifth Harbinger, proclaimed that all work would be halted for half a day throughout Snezhnaya in commemoration of their comrade, although Regrator pointed out that half a day didn't seem long enough. Pierro, the First Harbinger, then silenced the lesser Harbingers and made a speech as Signora's coffin was encased in ice.
- Like the other Fatui Harbingers, Pantalone's name was derived from a stock character in commedia dell'arte, a form of traditional Italian pantomime theater characterized by its masked characters and representation of fixed social types. Pantalone, the likely basis for the Genshin Impact character of the same name, was a wealthy man in commedia dell'arte who frequently used his high standing in the social hierarchy to bully others and interfere with their business.
