Paolo Zani is a supporting antagonist in the giallo film Black Belly of the Tarantula. Zani is an abusive husband who attack his wife Maria over an affair she had, shortly before she was murdered. He sets out to find the killer himself at the cost of his own life.

He's portrayed by the late Silvano Tranquilli, who also portrays Paolo Santangeli in So Sweet, So Dead.

Biography[]

Paolo is a financial business who found out his wife Maria, through photos she received as blackmail, was seduced by another man. He called her while she received a massage, then beat her when she got home. She defended herself, but he none of it and stormed out of the house. Maria was later found murdered violently after she was stunned with a paralytic. Paolo gave his account to leading investigator, Inspector Tellini, barely disguising his loveless relationship with Maria and admitting he doesn't know the man in the photos. When he's a suspect, he goes on the run to find the real killer. Holding Tellini at gunpoint in his own car, Paolo implores the truth to him before fleeing. Paolo eventually tracks a lead, the blackmailers Laura and Mario, chasing Mario to the roof of a high rise for answers. Tellini follows in close pursuit and shouts at Paolo to stop. Mario eventually scuffles with Paolo, who's pushed off the roof to his death. Tellini tries to catch Mario, but the killer runs him over with Mario's own car. Laura, the owner of the massage parlor, is also murdered in the spree, and it's later revealed the masseur at the parlor, who was reportedly blind, is the real killer, having worn fake contact lenses to avoid suspicion. Maria and other women the masseur savagely butchered reminded him of his own unfaithful wife, who he killed years before the spree.
