~ Papa Doc threatening to shoot B-Rabbit.

Clarence, better known as Papa Doc is the main antagonist of the 2002 semi-biographical drama film 8 Mile.

He was the head of a gang of rookie rappers called the "Free World", whom are the local rivals of Jimmy "B-Rabbit" Smith and his friends. Papa Doc often torments B-Rabbit's crew and even goes as far as to threaten them with violence and weapons but in the end of the film, B-Rabbit defeats Papa Doc and his gang by exposing all of the latter's secrets; his real name is Clarence and he had a privileged life, and the fact that he raps about being a gangster merely proves that he is just a wannabe.

He was portrayed by Anthony Mackie in both his film debut and first villain role, he would later play Adrian Doorbal in Pain & Gain and Captain Leo in Outside the Wire.

Biography[]

Papa Doc first appears at the start of the movie, rap battling "Shorty Mike" at the Shelter, with The Leaders of the Free World supporting him. He defeats "Shorty Mike" and wins the tournament. He is later seen at the parking lot, with The Leaders of the Free World, heckling the people and B-Rabbit's crew. Both teams of people get into a fight when B-Rabbit pulls Lyckety-Splyt's feet, making him hit his head off the car. Papa Doc attempts to use a gun, but is told to put it away by Wink. Papa Doc is later seen with The Leaders of the Free World, fighting B-Rabbit's Crew again, when B-Rabbit drives up to them and punches Lotto. He later helps The Leaders of the Free World beat up B-Rabbit for beating up Wink, even holding him at gunpoint and threatening to kill him, but Wink dissuades him.

Papa Doc is last seen rap battling B-Rabbit and over-confidently allows B-Rabbit to go first. In his freestyle, B-Rabbit acknowledges his lower-class roots as well as the comments the Free World members used against him in their rap battles, such as Wink having sex with Alex, Rabbit being jumped, Cheddar Bob shooting himself in the leg and Future being viewed as an Uncle Tom, before exposing Papa Doc's privileged background of attending the private school Cranbook and living at home in a stable two-parent household, shaming Papa Doc for trying to pass himself off as a gangster when his life was easy compared to B-Rabbit. Papa Doc, who has nothing to use against Rabbit as he has acknowledged everything, chokes and leaves the Shelter with The Leaders of the Free World.

Trivia[]

  • Papa Doc was also the nickname for Francois Duvalier, the President of Haiti from 1957 to 1971.
  • During the shoot of the final battle, Eminem actually used Mackie's (who played the character) personal information as a line for a freestyle against the final character, Papa Doc.
