~ Para-Medic |
Dr. Clark, also known by her codename Para-Medic, is a major antagonist in the Metal Gear series.
She was a former operative of the FOX unit and served as a medical adviser for Naked Snake during Operation Snake Eater and a founding member of The Patriots. She was the head of the project Les Enfants Terribles, and later became the chief of FOXHOUND’s medical staff.
In Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater, she was voiced by Houko Kuwashima in Japanese, and by Heather Halley in English.
Biography[]
Early life[]
Not much known about Dr. Clark’s background, other than being born on June 22, 1936 and having two brothers. Dr. Clark, in her own words, “was a a well-respected physician..." along with having a "spotless reputation, being highly skilled, patient and good-looking to boot.” However, her penchant for talking to much earned her the nickname "Quack." Prior to 1964, Major Zero enlisted her into the CIA.
Operation Snake Eater[]
In 1964, Dr. Clark assumed the alias "Para-Medic," a name inspired by her vision of establishing a unit of medics capable of deploying via parachute directly into the heart of battle, precisely where their skills were most urgently required.
In August 1964, she offered radio assistance to Naked Snake during the Virtuous Mission. During their initial meeting, she asked about Snake's real name, to which he playfully replied with "John Doe," a term often used for an unidentified male corpse. In jest, Para-Medic said her name was "Jane Doe." Throughout their communication, she provided Snake with medical guidance and details about the Tselinoyarsk environment, leading to Snake's frequent asking about the taste of various flora and fauna. Over time, she grew weary of his repetitive curiosity.
Para-Medic had the responsibility of documenting Snake's mission data. When Snake got injured during his confrontation with The Boss at Dolinovodno, Para-Medic guided him on self-treatment for his wounds, which involved addressing multiple cuts and fractures. After the Virtuous Mission's unfortunate outcome, Para-Medic paid a visit to the unconscious Snake while he was recovering in an advanced ICU.
She then encountered the risk of losing her medical license if the CIA's subsequent mission, Operation Snake Eater, did not achieve success. A week later, when Snake received orders to return to Tselinoyarsk, she willingly offered her assistance despite the potential jeopardy to her medical license, emphasizing to Snake that its significance was not her priority. Upon Snake's rendezvous with fellow spy EVA, Para-Medic supported EVA's recommendation that he take some rest, noting that, had it been her decision, he would have remained in the ICU until his injuries had completely healed. When EVA got injured in a motorcycle accident while making her escape through Lazorevo, Para-Medic provided Snake with guidance on how to administer first aid to her injuries. After the triumphant culmination of Operation Snake Eater, Para-Medic attended the awards ceremony in Langley, where Snake was honored with the title of Big Boss and the Distinguished Service Cross. Her worry was evident when Snake left the room in silence, without saying a word.
Post-Snake Eater[]
In 1970, Para-Medic achieved her dream by founding the nation's first paramedic system in Seattle, Washington. Furthermore, she played a pivotal role in founding the paramedic corps for the United States Armed Forces.
San Hieronymo Incident[]
In late 1970, Para-Medic was tasked with monitoring a specific radio frequency known to the original FOX Unit members. When Naked Snake was captured during the San Hieronymo Incident and infiltrated a Red Army communications base on the Peninsula, he used this frequency to contact Para-Medic. She informed him that he and Major Zero had been falsely accused of involvement in a FOX rebellion, resulting in the murder of any members who didn't join Gene's command. She also mentioned that Zero had been imprisoned by the Pentagon and recommended that Snake reach out to Sigint for assistance, as he was willing to help through ARPA.
Later on, Snake revisited the communications base to discuss a case of tropical malaria afflicting his new comrade, Roy Campbell. Para-Medic diagnosed Campbell through the radio and conveyed to Snake that he needed to infiltrate the nearest hospital to obtain the necessary drugs to save Campbell's life. With the assistance of Jonathan and his other recent recruits, Snake managed to rescue Campbell. After this incident, Para-Medic, along with Sigint and Major Zero, welcomed Snake on an airport runway upon his return to the United States.
The Patriots[]
Sometime later, Para-Medic joined the Patriots alongside Big Boss (Naked Snake), Ocelot, Sigint, and EVA. This organization was established by Zero with the aim of fulfilling The Boss's dying wish to reunify the world. In 1972, under the directives of Zero and using her real name, Dr. Clark, she led the "Les Enfants Terribles" project, which aimed to create clones of Big Boss. Dr. Clark had always held a deep fascination with the possibilities of human cloning, and she had even previously expressed to him that she considered him an "excellent specimen" eight years earlier. Her Japanese assistant served as an egg donor during the project.
By the 1980s, she had transitioned into employment at a company named ATGC, gaining recognition within the biotech industry for her specialization in bio-engineering. Concurrently, she delved deeper into genetic research. Gradually, she retreated from the public eye, leading those unfamiliar with her personally to mistake her gender, presuming she was a man. Meanwhile, word had begun circulating among fellow academics about her involvement in cloning. Huey Emmerich, in particular, had insights into her work, aware of her participation in a cloning project during the early 1970s, although precise details remained elusive due to her secretive nature regarding personal matters. Despite her confidentiality, he deduced her pivotal role in Cipher, albeit incorrectly assuming her to be male.
FOXHOUND[]
Dr. Clark became the head of FOXHOUND's medical staff and served as the chief geneticist, overseeing the planning and advancement of the Patriots' genetic research initiatives. Despite the prohibition of military-oriented genetic therapy by the early 2000s, the Patriots remained undeterred, as the relevant laws were mere declarations rather than formal treaties.
In 1999, Dr. Clark assumed the role of the lead scientist responsible for placing Big Boss into an artificially induced coma, following his defeat by Solid Snake in Zanzibar Land. Additionally, she oversaw the revival of Gray Fox by outfitting him with a cybernetic exoskeleton, using him as a test subject to experiment with her gene therapy techniques. Over the next four years, Dr. Clark and her team conducted experiments on Fox while he remained under the influence of drugs. The findings from these experiments contributed to the development of the Next-Generation Special Forces. It's worth noting that she also intentionally disrupted Fox's nerve connections, subjecting him to ongoing pain and suffering.
In 2003, Fox ultimately killed Dr. Clark after escaping with the help of his adopted sister. This marked Gray Fox's opportunity to exact revenge for the years of suffering he had endured, while Naomi Hunter assumed the position of the new head of FOXHOUND's medical team. Dr. Clark's demise was part of a scheme by both EVA and Ocelot, aimed at eliminating the faction of the Patriots that opposed Big Boss's faction.
