Villain Overview

The Paradox Pokémon are main antagonists of the 2022 video games Pokémon Scarlet and Pokémon Violet. They are a group of Pokémon that were brought from an alternate timeline's ancient past (Scarlet)/distant future (Violet) and into Area Zero, hidden deep within the Great Crater in the center of the Paldea region.

Biography[]

The origins of the Paradox Pokémon go as far back as two hundred years ago, where sightings of the Paradox Pokémon in Area Zero were recorded by an explorer named Heath within the Scarlet/Violet Book. Ten years prior to the game's events, Professor Sada/Professor Turo found the Scarlet/Violet Book. Fascinated with the Paradox Pokémon, the professor built a time machine to send Poké Balls to the ancient past/distant future and bring the Paradox Pokémon to the modern day.

The professor intended to turn Area Zero into a sanctuary for the Paradox Pokémon where they would thrive in peace as they conduct research, a goal called Project Tera. Two Koraidon/Miraidon were the first two Paradox Pokémon to be brought in to the modern day. However, the second Koraidon/Miraidon was more aggressive than the first one and killed the professor while protecting the first one. Without the professor's supervision, the time machine continued operating, bringing Paradox Pokémon to the present, risking to overthrow the current Pokémon populace of Paldea.

At one point, a Great Tusk/Iron Threads managed to escape from Area Zero and caused havoc within Asado Desert, becoming one of the five Titan Pokémon. The player and Arven were later able to defeat it.

In "The Way Home" story, the player, aided by Arven, Nemona, and Penny, enter the Great Crater and discover that the professor they were interacting with was a robotic clone. They are attacked by the Paradox Pokémon, but push their way towards the time machine itself and are fought by the AI professor controlled and corrupted by the Paradise Protection Protocol and its team of Paradox Pokémon, including the second Koraidon/Miraidon. But with help from the player's Koraidon/Miraidon, the second Koraidon/Miraidon is defeated and the AI warps to the ancient past/far future to shut down the time machine for good.

After completing the final story, the player can access all levels of Area Zero as they can now equip their mount, where they can find and capture the remaining Paradox Pokémon, including the second Koraidon/Miraidon.

In the epilogue of The Indigo Disk the player is able to take Terapagos to the Crystal Pool at Kitakami where it summons Professor Sada/Turo from a point in space-time where they had yet competed the Time Machine to have a brief meeting. During this meeting the Professor explained that their research focused on finding a way to catch Pokémon from different timelines into their distant past/future.

This meeting heavily implies that the true origin of Paradox Pokémon is that they come from different timelines and were brought to the present by Terapagos' ability to warp time-space, this also explains why Heath was able to encounter Paradox Pokémon 200 years before Sada/Turo built their time machine.

Trivia[]

  • In the Scarlet and Violet books, a sketch of an imaginary Paradox Pokémon is shown. This is either a hybrid of the Legendary Beasts in Pokémon Scarlet, or a hybrid of the three Swords of Justice in Pokémon Violet. These designs would later be revealed as misconnects for Walking Wake, Gouging Fire, and Raging Bolt in the Scarlet Book, and for Iron Leaves, Iron Boulder, and Iron Crown in the Violet Book.
  • Despite the Future Paradox Pokémon having "Iron" in their names, Iron Treads and Iron Crown are the only Steel types of the future Paradox Pokémon.
  • Paradox Pokémon, besides Koraidon and Miraidon, do not have conventional naming.
  • Donphan, Volcarona, and Cyclizar are the only Pokémon to have both a past and future Paradox counterpart.
  • All moves learned by leveling up are learned at levels which are multiples of seven, up to level 91 or 98 for Koraidon and Miraidon.
  • With the exception of Miraidon, all Future Paradox Pokémon are smaller than their contemporary relatives, while all Ancient Pokémon are bigger than their contemporary relatives.
  • All Ancient Paradox Pokémon who are based on unevolved Pokémon require a stone to evolve for their relatives: Thunder Stone for Magneton, Moon Stone for Jigglypuff, and Dusk Stone for Misdreavus.
  • Paradox Pokémon share a lot of similarities with Ultra Beasts, as most members have a base stat total of 570, share a signature ability, can't breed, and are connected to legendary Pokémon.
  • All Paradox Pokémon have 570 base stat totals except for Roaring Moon, Iron Valiant, the ancestors of the Legendary Beasts, and the descendants of the Swords of Justice which instead have 590 each, and Koraidon and Miraidon, which have 670 each.
  • Scream Tail is the only Ancient Paradox Pokémon that is based on a Pokémon that was never considered fully evolved at one point (Flutter Mane and Sandy Shocks are based on Misdreavus and Magneton respectively, who had been considered fully evolved prior to Generation IV, when Mismagius and Magnezone were introduced).
