You would determine the fate of the entire empire on a handful of blocks?
~ The Parakeet King

The Parakeet King (インコ大王, Inko-Daiō, lit. parrot great king) is the main antagonist of Studio Ghibli's 22nd animated film, The Boy and the Heron.

He is the king of the man-eating parakeets who sought to use the grandniece of the ruler of his world as a bargaining chip to take it over, since he believed it was being poorly run. Upon discovering that the world was being controlled by a stack of blocks, he flew into a rage and inadvertently destroyed it.

He is voiced by Jun Kunimura in the Japanese version and Dave Bautista in the English version, who also played Mr. Hinx in Spectre, Aldar in Smallville, Tong Po in Kickboxer: Vengeance, Owen Davidson in Master Z: The Ip Man Legacy, Glossu Rabban Harkonnen in the 2021 remake film Dune and Leonard in Knock at the Cabin.

Appearance[]

The Parakeet King was a white humanoid bird, and very large creature, towering over any other person, including his subjects. He is also the only parakeet to wear clothes, having a red cape and pair of pants, maroon boots, a yellow tunic, and a golden crown. Upon becoming a regular parakeet, he maintained the crown, but was otherwise nothing but a white parakeet.

Personality[]

The Parakeet King was a very regal individual, speaking every sentence as if it were a grand announcement. He was deeply loyal to his people and put them above all things, being willing to do anything to make their lives better. Presumably, he was responsible for the parakeet's habit of eating any creature they come across because of the lack of food on their world. However, he did have some honor, respecting even those he considered his enemies, and not allowing his subjects to eat babies.

When he discovered that his whole world revolved around a stack of blocks, he grew angry and made a series of poorly thought-out decisions that resulted in the end of his world.

Biography[]

Since the film is unclear as to how long parakeets live for, it is possible that The Parakeet King was one of the parakeets the Grand Uncle brought over to his world from Earth. If so, he established the parakeet way of life, which involves eating anything and anyone they can find. It is also possible that he inherited his position, probably from his father.

Upon finding Himi (the grandniece of the ruler and creator of his world) unconscious, he formed a plan to take her to the ruler as a bargaining chip in order to gain more power. He had two of his servants place her in a glass case and then took her to the ruler's garden.
