“ | We came to Earth with one goal in mind. We have no choice, but to parasitize human bodies to live. | „ |
~ Kwon Hyuk-joo |
The Parasites are the titular main antagonists of the Japanese science fiction horror manga Parasyte and its various adaptations, including an anime, the 2014 and 2015 live-action films, and the 2024 live-action series. They were created by Hitoshi Iwaaki.
They are a species of shapeshifting alien parasites that start off as worm-like creatures before attaching themselves to a living host, assimilating it while destroying the host's identity. Their home planet and their origins are unknown. They had the goal of invading and taking over the planet Earth and exterminating the human race. Shinichi speculated that they might have been created as an evolutionary countermeasure to humans.
Behaviours and Weaknesses[]
Parasites are made up of a single cell mass. They can either enter a human body through the ears, nose, or mouth to take total control over the host's brain because they feed off of it. The parasitic organisms that complete their mutation follow their instincts to devour humans and sustain their own lives. Their heads can actually transform completely. They can control exactly the rigidity and the power of their cranial transformation, and they can even use it as a sharp blade to kill.
Once it has synchronized, the parasite runs the human host's brain completely, causing the victim's consciousness to be completely absorbed by the parasite, taking away their humanity. Although their minds are gone, their bodies are being used as a stable source of vital nutrients for parasites. It will shrivel up and die without a living host body. A parasyte can be detected by plucking out a bit of their hair without the use of X-rays. They can live briefly, even if being chopped into pieces.
History[]
Manga[]
In the Parasyte manga series by Hitoshi Iwaaki, the parasites are alien organisms that invade human bodies and take over their brains, controlling their hosts. They enter through the ears or noses and then take over the brain, effectively controlling the host. Some parasites fail to reach the brain and end up taking over other parts of the body, resulting in unique, often grotesque, forms. Once a parasite takes control of a host's brain, it can change the host's appearance and abilities. These parasites can regenerate lost limbs, alter their shape, and possess superhuman strength and agility. Their primary goal is to blend in with humans while hunting other humans for sustenance.
The series follows Shinichi Izumi, a high school student whose right hand is infected by a parasite named Migi. Unlike other parasites, Migi does not take over Shinichi's brain and instead coexists with him, leading to a complex relationship between the two. As Shinichi struggles to come to terms with his new reality, he becomes involved in the broader conflict between humans and parasites. Throughout the series, Shinichi and Migi face various parasites with different abilities and motives. The parasites themselves face threats from both humans and each other, leading to a series of confrontations and battles.
Parasyte: The Grey[]
At some point, the parasites came in a kind of larval state, appearing all over Korea and all over the world at large with no explanation.
When parasite arrived at an EDM festival, it went on a rampage, killing innocent people left and right. After this, a parasite task force was formed on Korea, faster than any other world power on the whole planet. In order to prevent social chaos, the task force created a dedicated team to restrict and control media awareness and strictly control all information with regard to the parasitic organism.
The task force eventually began using the parasite that crawled in and took over Choi Jun-kyung's husband as a kind of radar to detect if there are any other parasites nearby. And so, that's why this parasite has the name "Hunting Dog".
They put on him a mask with a rare component we built in. The mask has a clever device that dispenses a kind of chemical the parasites are susceptible to. When the remote control dispenses the chemicals, the parasite will be immobilized. Also, in the mask there's a sensor that will monitor if the parasite transforms itself in order to escape. If that happens, then the solution is promptly dispensed, which brings the parasite a great deal of pain.
When the parasite known as "Heidi" was still a larva, it followed her instinct to take over a human brain, which is how she found Jeong Su-in. It tried to eat Su-in's brain, parasitize her body and seize control. However, Heidi realized the body she was trying to parasitize was seriously wounded. Therefore, in order to heal Su-in, it tried to synchronize with her entire body. As a result, Heidi was able to repair Su-in's body, but it had failed to completely take control of her brain. Because it failed to completely take over her brain, Heidi can only take control when Su-in are in danger, to protect the body that they share. It can only briefly take over Su-in's consciousness about 15 minutes a day. Therefore, it will use that limited amount of time to protect their body, which now maintains their life.
Powers and abilities[]
Powers[]
- Alien Physiology: After assimilating their host, these creatures exhibit several powers.
- Possession: Crawling physically into a living host, the parasites are able to fully take control of the host's body, even physically reshaping it for its survival.
- Superhuman Strength: A parasite that successfully takes over a host's brain can then maximize the physical strength of that host.
- Superhuman Durability: They are more durable than humans beings.
- Genetic Memory: They are capable of obtaining mental information from their hosts.
- High intelligence: Their intelligence is comparable to humans, though they are also capable of learning extremely quickly depending on their environment. Migi was able to gain a superb understanding of Japanese after reading a number of books on the subjects for only one day.
- Metamorphosis: They are capable of transforming parts of its host's body into a variety of defensive forms; can be morph the area around their entry site (which is typically the head) into a versatile "parasite tissue". It also can morph its hands into scythe-like blades.
Weaknesses[]
- Host's Organs Dependent:
- Fire Vulnerability:
Trivia[]
- In flims version, the parasites are treat in more sympathetic light. And by Gotou words, the voice in his head that tell him to kill all humans ato protect all life is come from humanity themselve.
