Pasha Pook is a major antagonist in The Legend of Drizzt, serving as the overarching antagonist of The Crystal Shard and Streams of Silver and the main antagonist of The Halfling's Gem. He was a powerful crime lord in the city of Calimport, ruling the Pook Guild. He was also the owner of a powerful magic ruby, which was stolen from him. Pook dedicated much of his resources to regaining the ruby, a quest which eventually resulted in his death. He was the temporary master of Regis, Artemis Entreri, LaValle, and Rassiter.
Appearance[]
Pook was a large and heavy-set man who enjoyed wearing extravagant and expensive clothing.
Personality[]
Being a powerful crime lord, Pasha Pook was ruthless, power-hungry, and greedy. He retained and grew his power at all costs and felt no remorse for any of his actions. He was also notably intelligent, being a skilled strategist and manipulator.
Pasha Pook valued loyalty from his servants above all else. He would spare no expense in generously rewarding his most loyal and useful subordinates, sometimes even developing a friendship with them. However, his generosity was a double-edged sword, and he never forgot betrayal. If a servant who he had believed loyal turned against him, he would enjoy having them tortured in the most sadistic ways he could think of.
Biography[]
Pasha Pook was born in the poor, crime-ridden desert city of Calimport, where he rose to power as a pasha, or crime lord. Using the powerful ruby pendant (a magical item that allowed the bearer to hypnotize and control anyone who looked in it) he manipulated and destroyed his opponents, eventually becoming one of the most powerful men in the city, controlling the powerful Pook Guild. He even managed to employ Artemis Entreri, the deadliest assassin of Sword Coast, long-term, having him murder anyone who could not be debilitated by the ruby. However, his fortune changed when one of his trusted servants, Regis, stole the ruby pendant and fled the city.
In order to get his precious artifact back, Pook hunted Regis for several years, tracking him to several different towns. However, the thief would always escape, and eventually disappeared completely. Now desperate, Pook had Entreri hunt for him. Without the ruby or his top assassin, Pook was forced to make an alliance with Rassiter, a fellow crime lord and the leader of the wererats in Calimport. Although Pook despised the man, he needed in order to retain any of his former power in the city.
Five years later, Pook's top wizard LaValle discovered that Entreri was returning to Calimport with Regis as his prisoner. He also discovered that the assassin was being followed by an antagonistic group. Consequently, had Pinochet, a pirate who owed him a favor, dispose of the group.
A few days later, Entreri arrived in Calimport and delivered Regis to Pook, as well as a magical artifact that summoned a magical panther the bearer could control. Pook had Regis placed in a cage surrounded by vicious big cats and left him there for several days. Eventually, he retrieved him and tried to have his new panther maul him to death. However, unbeknownst to Pook, the panther a knew Regis, and instead of killing him, took him back to her dimension.
Pook and LaValle worked to bring Regis back to their dimension but were interrupted when the Pook Palace was infiltrated by a four-person group seeking to free the halfling. Rassiter and Entreri both attempted to stop them but were both defeated, with the company defeating Rassiter's were-rat hordes and forcing Entreri to flee into the city. Pook had LaValle use his magic mirror to teleport them to a hell dimension, which he was sure would kill them. However, they were able to reopen it, let lose hordes of demons in the Pook Palace. Around the same time, Regis reopened a portal to the palace, letting lose a legion of magical panthers. Pook was killed in the ensuing chaos.
