Pat is a minor unseen character in the 2020 action-adventure game The Last of Us Part II.
Pat is a member of the Rattlers, a brutal slaver faction who enslave and torture many people they find by luck on their patrols. Following the Cordyceps outbreak, he lived with his mother at home and during the apocalypse, joined the Rattlers to be able to provide food.
Biography[]
Background[]
Sometime after the outbreak, Pat joined the Rattlers in Santa Barbara, California. Like the other Rattlers, Pat captured, enslaved, and abused or infected countless survivors at their work base. Pat once lived with his mother, and was on good terms with Jenny, her caretaker. It is known Pat joined the Rattlers to provide food for his family back home, most likely in California as well.
The Last of Us Part II[]
Pat wrote to Jenny in a letter revealing that his success in capturing and hunting "strays" (innocent survivors) earned him new rewards like food, such as grapefruit and potatoes, which he regularly sends back home. He expresses grave concern for his mother's health and urges Jenny to make sure she gets "fatty cuts" of beef because she looked morbidly skinny the last time he saw her at their residence.
Pat is presumed dead following the violent prisoner revolt during Ellie’s assault on the Rattlers’ compound.
Personality[]
Pat is unique among the Rattlers due to his visible inner conflict. Though complicit in the group’s brutal operations, his letter reveals a more sympathetic and desperate side—a man torn between horrific duties and personal responsibility to help his mother.
His participation in human enslavement was likely motivated by necessity rather than cruelty. However, this does not absolve his crimes; it complicates them, painting him as a morally gray figure caught in a collapsing world where survival trumps decency.
Trivia[]
- Pat is never physically seen in The Last of Us Part II. His existence and personality is revealed only through a collectible letter found by Ellie during her infiltration of the Rattlers’ base.
- Pat is one of the few Rattlers given any kind of humanizing background, showing a motive beyond cruelty. This makes him a rare example of a morally conflicted member of the group.
- The language in Pat’s letter is unusually empathetic and calm for a Rattler, emphasizing concern for his mother’s health over loyalty to the violent group.
