~ Patrick Butler cursing Dale Shavers. |
Patrick Butler is the secondary antagonist of the Criminal Minds episode "Lockdown". He is a prison inmate who starts killing the guards who forced him to compete in a "fight club" and kill one of his friends.
He was portrayed by Isaac Keys.
Biography[]
Early life[]
A convicted bank robber, Butler was sentenced to serve a sentence of at Reagan Federal Penitentiary, but his sentence was increased to 20 years after he killed another inmate during a brawl. This attracted the attention of head prison guard Dale Shavers, who was secretly running a "fight club" in which he and the other guards forced the inmates to fight to the death while they placed bets. He strong-armed Butler into participating, threatening to make his life hell if he refused.
Butler befriended another inmate in the fight club, Devon White, and it is implied that they were lovers, as well. One night, during a fight club session, Shavers ordered Butler and White to fight each other. Butler tried to take it easy on White, but ended up accidentally killing him. Heartbroken and enraged, he decided to take revenge on the guards who forced him to fight by killing them one by one, as brutally as possible. He started by killing two guards, stabbing them with a homemade shiv and stuffing socks in their mouths so they would choke to death on their own blood.
"Lockdown"[]
The prison's warden calls in the FBI's Behavioral Analysis Unit (BAU) to profile the killer, which makes Shavers nervous and provokes him to send one of his informants, serial rapist Randall Jefferson Jones, to threaten Butler's friend Sam Pritchett, who had also witnessed White's murder. In response, Butler sneaks up on Jones in the shower room, rapes him, breaks seven of his fingers, and scalds him to death with hot water, before he leaves a sock stuffed in Jones' mouth.
After Jones' body is found, Shavers becomes suspicious of Butler and searches his cell. After finding Butler's shiv, Shavers puts him in solitary confinement and demands to know who else is involved in the murders. Butler defiantly replies that the BAU will eventually find out what he has done and arrest him. Enraged, Shavers strikes Butler with his baton. Butler tries to fight back, but Shavers overpowers him and bludgeons him to death. Nevertheless, the BAU does eventually discover the fight club, prompting Shavers to commit suicide.
